Content Recap - Beyond - Chapter Four Livestream - Exploration and the Codex

Well, crap, there goes those ideas.

I wanted to be able to use the FSS to hunt for USSs while traveling in a system I'm familiar with, as well functioning as a telescope so I can get a better look at my destination so I can more easily plan my braking maneuver. [mad]

Yep, this is one of only a few things I am not entirely happy about. I genuinely believe that solo pilots need to be able to fly & scan at the same time. It shouldn't be *easy*, but it should be do-able. That means being able to accelerate in Analysis Mode, & an Analysis Screen that doesn't 100% obscure the view of the scanner & cockpit HUD.

Nope, Asteroid Clusters will not provide credits for scanning them at this time.

I could understand that when Asteroid Clusters provided nothing of value, but now that we will be able to mine resources within them, I think they need to have a credit value of some kind.

I also hope the developers consider seeding Asteroid Clusters with a whole range of interesting things-like USS's & PoI's.

Another thing I think needs to be considered. If the honk can reveal the primary star of a system, surely it should also be able to reveal planets within visual range of a player's ship.

Back to winging or multi-crewing with friends for exploration. What if those people aren't around when you go to sell your data? Does the same wing or multi-crew need to be formed for them to receive a payout? Would be nice if even if they're offline, next time they come online they have what is essentially a voucher notification waiting for them for payment via Universal Cartographics. Not sure how easy that would be to swing for the server.

Neutering the Discovery Scanners for a Mini-Game! and People are actually going for this? As for the Surface Scanner what happens to my engineering specs? I honestly like the way Exploration was, It was simple Jump Honk Check for Metal Rich or Earth Like if None Repeat.

Now its Jump, Honk and what sit there and scan stuff using a Bar Slider!? Had you not done a bar slider mini game and just removed that part and kept the rest of it my view would be much better, this sounds like its adding grind to the funnest part of Elite Dangerous the Exploration; when you could have just added the "Night Vision" mode and been done. Granted the whole Probe thing sounds cool as long as I dont have to fly to the planet all over again just to scan it. That was the whole point of engineering the Surface Scanners and putting ALL of that work into doing it. I hope they really think about this some more and take community feed back because I for one am skeptical about this. Furthermore If 100% efficiency is that mark for getting credits Ill be done playing as long as its just some bonus hopefully a significant one that would incentivize everyone to continue to use it otherwise its a waste of a good mechanic.

It was a bit concerning during the stream that the Dev's don't know the terms the whole community uses. While "Fignals" was funny not knowing Honk from the widly used "Jump N Honk" and calling it a "Discovery Book" instead of a Discovery Log.

That being said I would like to see many things change in the game there's aspects that I do not agree with that Add more grind to the game that makes me not want to continue to play it as it just takes all the fun out of it, Ive spent months getting to the point where I could get G5 Engineer rolls and now Its going to take me more time to get back to that per item. It feels like its more of a slap in the face then a Game Play Enchanment or a Quality of Life Improvement. Honestly I keep going back and forth between giving this game a favorable positive review and blasting it because someone somewhere thought adding more grind was a good thing. The Dev's Had my vote after they fixed and brought back the engineering specs and numbers back to the logging system so it can once again be ported to Ship Building Websites; Now I am sad to say they've lost it again with the Engineering changes they've made then pilled on with this mini game stuff. I will give credit the changes and improvements to mining need to happen alas I dont think its going to be enough to encourage people to do it even with it; as mining is by far the least fun aspect of the game its simply to time consuming and it doesn't net you enough profit to warrant that time spent when you can do trade runs that will Earn you 5Kcr/T or passenger missions that will earn you millions for a couple of hours when mining nets you a small fraction of that without a revamp and increase to precious minerals and metals being found in prestines this update is less impressive.

The question is: what kind of game is ED? Is it a space sim? A combat game? A trading game? A resource management game? An exploration game?

The answer is, of course: it is all of the above. And players can choose to play it in such a way that emphasises their preferred game, and almost ignores the others.

Yo, dawg, I heard you like combat. Bounty hunting and piracy is just the career for you. Or perhaps go Thargoid hunting. You hone your flying skills, build up an arsenal of weapons and ignore the trade and resource bit. Bounties are your income. You can just dock with a station, throw some money at them and they will fuel and fix your ship, and top up your materials for you.

Yo dawg, I heard you like trade. Work your way up to a T9, surf the trade routes. Get an armoured T10 for the more profitable but dangerous regions, kit it out for silent running, and away you go. You can ignore the resource and bounty hunting bit; trade is your income, and when you dock with stations they will fuel and fix your ship as before.

Prospector? Git your mining laser, collect your own fuel and resources as you mine the black, way out of the bubble where there are fewer pirates to worry about. Resource management is now a thing as you're on your own, but that is the name of your game, right? And when you bring precious rares back to the bubble, you cash in big and kit your ship out for more challenging, complex mining operations far out in space.

Explorer? Again, resource management is key, but as an explorer you like to be independent. Meanwhile you just enjoy the wonders of space as you leisurely cruise from system to system, gathering data to sell for big bucks back in the bubble. That is your trade.

One man's grind is another man's fun. But the thing is: you can play the game in such a way that maximises what you think of as fun and minimises what you think of as grind. Just pick the career path to suit.

This new update has me really excited. I’ve been sitting at 50% Pioneer for a while now because I wanted to get Explorer elite in the new system. I feel like exploring will finall have an impact on the game as a whole.

I also really like the addition of game lore/ codex. The biggest gap in game play has long been long periods spent in supercruise. I usually listen to a podcast or read forums, but now I can do similar but in game. All the changes look very promising so far. I’m seriously hyped for the mining update and new ships!!

It sounds as though we'll be needing the new version of the ads for most things. Is there any chance of just making it a built in system feature for all ships rather than an optional internal seeing as it is so integral to the gameplay. Otherwise everyone is going to be forced to equip one and it sounds like something ships should just have as standard. I'd rather not waste an optional slot when there's a more sensible option to just have it be standard like the planetary landing suite.

No difference that having or not having the current ADS.

They weren't exactly clear on how things would be if you didn't have one in the stream. Whether or not we could still find stuff just flying around or if we need the scanner for signal sources.

But either way i feel the same way that e ven now it should have been just a standard ship feature. It just seems like a basic amenity.

Hi Aeos,

To clarify: the honk still works in normal space, but the FSS mode will not.

This should allow you honk those Thargoid probes.

Okay Will that is great information indeed.

Can you also verify whether or not honking outside of the FSS screen displays the signal & body count up in the top right info window of the cockpit HUD? This info right here:

If it does then that would greatly benefit traveling explorers in the new system!
