Control Axes Hotzone Limit Request for Analog Sticks... Pretty Please!

I dual wield double axes... with my thumbs.

The path of least resistance would be to set up a profile with Joystick Curves and map vJoy axes in the game.

For greater control or if you want to use vJoy for other stuff, FreePIE is what you want. While debugging your script you can use diagnostics.watch to print the raw and modified values of each axis.

it would be better if we could have an auto aim and autopilot computer, no extra slot or weight !! :D

OK, got around to testing this to provide some real world data for you guys.

Just for testing purposes, I reassigned my controls to have the right stick vertical axis control throttle so that full up is full throttle and full down is full reverse and unassigned the horizontal axis from any control input.

With stick up...

And stick in a top corner...

So assuming controls are directly proportional, etc., and given my controller's current calibration, this works out to be a roughly 19% loss in control maneuverability for both axes on a stick when it is in the "corners."

So yes, this is an actual thing.

...

Also, I wanted to mention that while I appreciate the suggestions of potential ways to go about trying to solve this issue for me, I'm hopping very much that Frontier can address and resolve this issue for everyone with controller settings options in the game menu. Also, I'm not all that keen on the notion of potentially having an unfair advantage over others.

Thanks.

It's no wonder I much prefer piloting the small, agile ships, even for exploration.

CNE waypoint 8, featuring the Jellyfish Nebula, the Large Magellanic Cloud, the Rosette Nebula, the galactic plane, and of course my ship, the Ronin – "Celestial Dreams" – non-edited...

I'm wondering if any of you guys with HOTAS or using less expensive standalone joysticks are having this issue as well. I'm also curious about Xbox controllers.

Would any of you be willing to try the test I did in the above post and report back with your findings?

Thanks, and fly smartly, Commanders.

I have an XBox controller, although I don't use it for this game. It works correctly, as does my joystick. I also have an old Logitech controller in a drawer somewhere. Frankly I never liked it very much, which is why I have the XBox controller.

I support your campaign to get an option added to the game. Not only would it solve your problem, it would be potentially useful to other people, albeit in limited circumstances. Adding options is never a bad thing.

That said, Frontier tend to prioritise features and fixes that will benefit most people. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a fix. There are options for you to help yourself and if you want to avoid further frustration you are probably better off taking them than waiting for an official solution.

Fly smartly, indeed.

Bit of a necro, but I have information that relates to this problem. I developed a method that fixes it, but using TM Target software (for Warthog and T16000 sticks).

You could use the same math for controllers. I found some linux driver guys doing the exact same thing for xbox controllers. I would look into FreePIE and vJoy, I think that is your best bet for general joystick control that can be used on any device.

Thanks. Still hoping FD can implement control options in the game to resolve this though. I'd rather people didn't have to rely on third party options just to help level the playing field.

These are some options though for people who happen upon this thread or have these issues. [up]

Seconded. PPjoy is another virtual stick you could try. FreePIE's the best as you can tailor the scripts to perfection. It can even convert head tracker inputs to mouse or virtual joystick inputs - so you could steer with your nut..

Does Joystick Curves allow you to set the response curve to greater than 100%? The issue is that with the circular bezels surrounding the mini-sticks, thrusting up and left (assuming that vertical and horizontal axes are mapped to the same stick) blocks off some of the possible motion. You can do it with FreePIE, I think.

A ghetto fix would be to take the casing off the gamepad and physically cut the bezels into a square shape - the thumbsticks themselves come with the full range of motion.

I have the older Logitech Cordless RumblePad 2 (which stopped working by not being able to connect to its receiver) that has the square holes as well as the newer Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 that I'm using now that has the round holes. Externally they're the same shape and size except for the trigger buttons on the front. Internally things don't quite line up as well, otherwise I would have already swapped their guts around. I might look into it again though.

Why they don't still just make controllers like this with the square holes at least as an option is a thorn in my mind.
