Something worth a thought is that by the time ED comes out there will probably be a new Xbox with a new type of controller.

What that will be like is anyone’s guess.

MS seem to be promoting Smart Glass quite a bit, and having seen the new WiiU controller they may look to copy that to some extent?

Imagine if the new controller is similar to the WiiU and is compatible with ED - you could have the radar and/or ship instruments on the pad (amongst other things).

I will try both Xbox controller and HOTAS.
XBox is more layed back but too nervos in mid position in Oolite for example.
I sugest to implement some adjustable exponent valu to the sticks like digital RC- transmiters have.
With a non linear curve small sticks are no problem for me.

The first game didn't have yaw. Anyone know how many degrees of control are possible? That could be a big factor in deciding control method.

Since it is a space game 3 axis.
Not counting throttle and banking.
With a Hotas or an XBOX-PS3 style game controller you can cover all.

CH Hotas for me with TrackIR. Completely at home with this setup from my IL2 and IL2 COD flying. Plus it is completely and I mean completely accurate, no deadspots, no jerkiness, just pure smooth accuracy.

Guys , can you tell me how the thrust lever has so far been implemented in other spacesims ? From what I've seen the throttle is 0%-100% style (or am I mistaken and it is -100% 0% +100% ?), if so , how would you apply backwards thrust in Elite ?

I asked the question on Reddit and Braben said that keyboard+mouse and xbox type gamepads will be standard followed by other typical joysticks and flight controlers.

I sugest to implement a reverse button or use 49-0 as reverse and 51-100 as forward. (50 = no thrust)
Thrust reverse button is common in jets.

Thanks , I asked because I'm deciding whether to get a joystick, and the only unknown is the throttle.

Is there a joystick whose throttle lever has an indexed (snap) zero position in the middle , otherwise I think it will be difficult to quickly stop full ? Or ar they all 0-100 ?

Hope (as mentioned previously) they provide the full range from BBC stylee (like I grew up with), K/M (which I got good with), Joystick (which I played Hardwar with) to the XBox controller my son uses.

Got to appeal to the young generation :rolleyes: :)

Xpadder and AHK. Never had a problem with it.

I of course will be using the original Elite control method. ;) I still used it in Frontier and after a while it was actually more fun than KB/Mouse. took a lot of getting used to though.

Great idea.
I am definitely tempted to build something along the lines of this. Definitely not buying one at $49,150 US. Bit of MDF, a couple of broom handles and a deck chair should do it.
Got a year to get it ready. Problem is I live in a 9 square meter room so everything else will have to go. Wait, did I say problem?

AutoHotKey is brilliant for complex macros , but Xpadder can't swap the axis between them (something I find I need to do very often). Axis can be swapped directly in the registry , or with a wrapper like x360ce. I hope there will be no limitation in ED as to the assignment of the axis so we don't have to improvise too much.
