Controller Optimization Dualshock4

I use a PS3 controller on my mac for Elite - I've found the best setup for me was similar to the "Classic" context, but with yaw controlled by pressing the joysticks. It's digital, so not ideal, but is about the only way I could get a full set of controls on the two joysticks. I do (did) rely heavily on the keyboard, so it's going to be interesting getting used to all the modifiers needed.

75% and 0% speed presets are absolutely essential. L1/R1 at the same time may be an option.

Yeh I might do a couple of presets actually. Good tip.

This is a great tip, thank you! I have tried this with a few buttons at travel landing training. I now use L1+R1 for 0% speed and touch pad left/up for 75%. This deletes fast switch to previous fire group, but i guess fast switch for next fire group will be enough. First i wanted to put 75% on mid touchpad, this worked in the settings (represented as tpad left/down+right/down) but not in the mission. It always opened one of the terminals

I wonder if Frontier has support for the X-52? a friend tells me his X-52 works on his ps4 (he plays that f2p war thunder) and if its ps4 compatible then maybe Fronter have added it?

The problem is War Thunder is so bad a game that ps4 gives it away free. One can use his garage door opener and it would work.

I intend to set throttle and yaw to the left stick, pitch and roll on the right stick, vertical thrusters L1 L2,fire 1 and 2 R1 and R2
There's a sweet spot on the throttle in a turn that responds well to an analog input.
I've used this setup for a couple of years and i'd recommend trying it,i think it gives more control.

Giving that config a try before I give up on the DS4 :) Throttle on the left stick, and pitch/roll on the right soothes my muscle memory from the Saitek X55 I was using on PC.

I'm gonna have to get used to the ds4 coming from xbox as I keep thrusting up or down when using yaw lining up for landing lol 😁

Isn't it the same as Xbox One setup?
Got mine sorted for the time being with pitch / roll left stick, yaw / v. thrust right stick. H. thrust is on a modifier (L3) and right stick.
L1+R1 is 0% throttle, bottom left on touchpad is 50%, bottom right is 75%.

Seems to be getting me through so far. :)

Yikes, tried this in a Sidey on the PC as wanted to check out the Starter Systems as I heard rumours they were in lockdown (false) and its bad, real bad, not good for landing at all, no precision control.

I believe that you can have a different set of bindings for when your landing gear is deployed. In that instance, you should be able to have the default increase/decrease throttle behaviour to give finer control.

Would be cool if all of us post a pic with some of the changes we made to our controller, so its more precise for ppl who play the game in other language, but use this forum lol

Once I have a setup I'm happy with (and had a chance to actually play the game) I'll draw a picture of mine. I need to do this anyway to as there are too many combinations for me to remember.

I have bound the following for now:

R1+L1 - 0% throttle
R1+Up - 100% throttle
R1+Left - 75% throttle
R1+Right - 50% throttle
R1+Down - 25% throttle

That works, particularly the 0%, and I'm finding them pretty intuitive. However, there's a small problem with 25-100% - if you hold R1 & then push left, throttle is set to 75% but then continues to increase while you keep R1 held. Not what's wanted! If you press & release R1 and Left together, the speed is set to exactly 75%, but the pips have also been re-assigned.

I'm happy to use it like this for now (R1+Left then Down to reset the pips) but does anyone know if there's a way of stopping it from happening? Clearly R1 can't be a context menu as it has to be held for normal use.

Sometimes a binding appears as R1+Left, and sometimes Left+R1. Does that make a difference to its use?

I have L3 and R3 for yaw, and that works for me. L3+R3 is now headlook (which was the only conflict).

Thanks!

I can't land on a pad without left and right thrusters bound to something. Took me 5 minutes to get my sidewinder down in the middle of the pad, but at at angle was the best I could do with the default controls. Anyone figure out where to bind left and right thrust?

I did not notice the alternate L3 switch that apparently does it. I flipped to Classic mode as the default which uses the R<-> for lateral thrusters. Even with that, it is not shifting me sideways on the landing pad. It ends up rotating again. I need to keep playing with it; perhaps I clicked L3 at some point and changed settings again.

I can tell that it will take me awhile to get a good controller layout. My big change tonight was to rebing landing gear to []+<- (square + left d-pad). That combo was for the left panel, but the touch pad has it as well and I already boosted a few times coming in for a landing.

I've posted this elsewhere, but I thought I'd add it here in case anyone is following the thread:

The default bindings have a LARGE dead-zone configured for all of the joystick axes. It's really not needed, and reducing it a lot really makes the joysticks much more responsive and easier to control.
