Correct Pronunciation of Lave

Lave as in 'shave' imho.

I would expect the Lah-vey variations might be from posh folk, Cambridge educated, but if David does not do it that can't be correct usage.

We've established Lave to rhyme with Dave as an official pronunciation on the unofficial Galnet YouTube channel! As a result, there's now thousands of YouTube viewers who think it's "Lave" to rhyme with Dave if they had no previous thoughts on it. ;) Consistent pronunciation amongst reporters is a constant problem for us there. Lave's one of the "easier" ones.

We do research existing precedent but unless we can find one, we have to make it up. "Falisci" is a good example of one where I couldn't find a valid English language pronunciation. "Quenisset" (French astronomer, therefore French pronunciation) is a good example of one where we had precedent.

It's when we have to read aloud things like "Aisling Duval" and "Éamonn Uí Laoghire" that I'm thinking, "come on, you're just trolling us now!" :)

When I'm talking to my friends who know which systems I'm referring to I often just say something similar. Eg:
Facece -> Faeces
Shinrarta Dezhra -> Shin Megami Tensei
Tarach Tor -> Tractor
Cheneti -> Chenjesu (from Star Control)
Macame -> Macramé
Sorbago -> Sorbolene

That said, I do say Layve.

Am I the only one who calls it Lah-vey? It sounds better like that to me.

Whilst "Lave" as in "Dave" (or "layv") is the 'correct' dictionary pronunciation for it, the meaning is "to wash", which doesn't sound "otherworldy", so I always preferred to take it as "Lah vey" and imagine it as a swishy place, and not some place needing a bath.
