For me that engineer is the Marco Quent of Odyssey. I so don't want to do even 1 of those covert missions. Every base I'm in seems to revolve around me. All NPC's following me like flies when I forgot to wipe. I lack the patience to wait until they GFTO.
But I really want to have night vision on my suits. So I'll hop to Colonia to unlock those engineers. IMO those have far more reasonable unlock reqs. The bubble engineers have mat reqs which I deem impossible to find. One of the most frustrating aspects to the grind as I see it: the common mats are too common and the rares too rare.
Just to add my 2p worth...
My other active account has done more than 6 Covert theft / heist missions successfully, but no invite yet. Guess I did it right with the first account, I just don't remember what I did!
I've mapped out the upgrades I want to perform to G5 one of each suits, from currently G4 (Mav) and G3 (the other two) - in Inara of course, I really wish the game would allow for this as it can be a pain to keep track of certain mats that are used across different recipes, but 1984 game design FTW it appears... anyhowAssets can be traded, so you just grab whatever of those. Goods often tend to be a blocker, but power regs can be cheesed. Data isn't that hard because missions offer a lot of data rewards, although manufacturing instructions, while not that rare, can take a long time.
And yeah, some of the unlocks are downright painful.

The other stuff I can cope with, including some of the data, but I also need to somehow obtain 59 MI's, and 58 Suit Schematics. I feel a bit light headed right now.
I quite like Inara as a one-stop-shop, and it works very well - though I'm sure that app (think I've seen it in a YT video the other day) is great also. Without those tools I would've probably given up already on the entire engineer loop, it's so opaque it really does remind me of games I used to play in the 80s/90s where I had to take notes on sheets of paper to keep track of things. The Odyssey Material Helper is fantastic, give it a try instead of Inara.

Yeah, Inara shows those in grey - it was a bit of a revelation just how many seemingly useless mats (especially data - why??) have been added. So much white noise for nothing - and afaik they don't pay that well either, and more importantly they're not flagged as useless in game so I'm too paranoid to just sell stuff in case I pick those which are used somewhere. Terrible, terrible design - though I wonder if this is a result of the ongoing Alpha phase we're still in - product's not ready for launch. It certainly would be more of a chore. Especially with all those materials that have no use... adding those was just... dumb. If they had been obviously unecessary things that you just sell. Like paintings, jewelry, paper credits, then it would make sense.

Guess what. A Frontier Support member (I raised a ticket on something unrelated, and since they asked whether I had anything else I needed help with, I asked them about this) just told me the requirement is 12 in total - 6 Covert Heists AND 6 Covert Thefts. Feels a bit like a free-for-all at this stage.
I'm in two minds about challenging them about it - I'm getting really tired of this and might just grind it out in the hope it'll eventually pop. It'd drive me nuts though if it still won't and I'm back to raising a ticket anyways.

Yeah you're right. Will see what they say, it's a bit meh they don't seem to know their own game, unless the ability to unlock the engineer with fewer than 12 missions is the real bug, lol.Challenge them. Support should have the correct answers.
Here's the next response (for some reason it's a different person each time, my ticket seems to be doing the rounds a fair bit):
"We always go for what the game says which is 6 of each
If you do a bunch more missions and can confirm either way, we're happy to send a poke to the Dev team and ask them to see what's up!"
Ahem. I'm not in the game now but I'm pretty sure the requirement description isn't as clear cut as that. I'd do one more Covert Theft (bringing my total to 6 post-official-engineer-discovery message) to see if a series of 6 of one category unlocks it, if I were to be able to find one where I currently am of course. I really do think the game knows what I'm looking for and based on that decides "thou shall not pass", and showers me with stuff as soon as I no longer need it.
I already did in my last email, but that got conveniently ignored it seems, so I guess it's a case of computer says no by the looks of it.That's the problem, the game itself isn't clear. Its badly worded, which is why there is confusion in the first place.
Can you point this out to them?
