Could this canned project become the Planetary/ FPS element of ED ?

The thing is though, this has been the plan since the 'Elite 4' days and it was definitely mentioned during the Kickstarter. Whether it actually makes it into the game is another discussion entirely, but it's definitely on the cards perhaps 2 or 3 years down the line.

I think that's a realistic timeframe to introduce this kind of element, any time sooner and there's a risk of losing focus on the core of Elite itself.

You probably wouldn't need the flame suit had you not opened up your post with an insult. Also, fun is subjective, and there's no reason why there couldn't be a 1st and 3rd person perspective when it comes to characters.

There are too many people who think that insulting people is clever ,its not .Also why threaten people by saying "well.. you are on a list.." If you want people to listen to your views and even possibly a Dev to read them ,then why do that ?

I think that you misunderstood mate; It's more the physics mechanics, animations etc. that people want from that game for the people running around not the camera angle/position...

im sorry:/ i probably was a bit rude on the intro and i may have misunderstood some things.. for that im sorry:/
i usually dont go off like this but i had a tiresome day today:/

and i really dont like when games try and mix third and first person modes.. there are no way to ruin immersion faster than that..
especially if there is any type of gun play involved.
there are good reason for it to. like taking cover, if you easily can see above cover in third person that is not good for tactical thinking and it puts first person players at a disadvantage. also in third person you are more reliant on autoaiming mechanics wich is not good for fair player skill based combat. just look at gta..
if indeed they used some mechanics from the game in the video that would be fine but not the third person view..
there are reasons battlefield and shooter games like it are as popular as they are..

again im sorry for coming off as rude and insulting:/ going to bed to sleep on it now..

Never really understood why people who are presumably Ok with shooting the crepe out of spacecraft have such a downer about shooting people who aren't in spacecraft.

I don't. Actually, I'd like them to make this right. But I am afraid that they will redirect too much resources and funds into that FPS module, leaving spaceships -which are and always should be THE thing about Elite- unfinished, buggy and generally stale.

Thanks for the apology :) I dont like third person view either :)

Um actually... these expansions, all of them ARE part of the core game model.

Core game model.. So once Frontier figures out the planetary landing instance/mini-game they can move on to USS FPS events! Complete with wedding parties, funerals, and lost blueprints.

Near definitely. ED was always a way for FD to try to get some value (repurpose COBRA) from the Outsider faīlure, which nearly sunk them.

This actually highlights to me a deeper rooted problem facing Elite: the audience is so polarised between 84/ FFE players wanting the same in 2015 and players wanting Elite to grow beyond the original concept. Braben and the Devs have said a few times now that landings and walking around will come.

This is the largest dichotomy within the game. Thus solo and private group. These players already have places to go to avoid these activities. Why do they keep frothing at the mouth over Open? They are never going to play there, and I have seen posts that show many are secretly hoping for the failure of FDEV's vision so they can have their sacred offline mode, since the release of the server is a promised feature upon the demise of the game.

Crazy, isn't it?

to all the old elite fans trying to make this game stay in the past. you should stay in your spaceships if you cant compete in fps combat. it's more fun for you..

I just love how the kiddies assume the only reason someone doesn't want 'yet another' fps game is because we cannot compete.

Ye gods, words fail me at times. *facepalm*

2 or 3 years? Actually I think a year. It is supposed to be the first major expansion - walking in ships and stations, which together with boarding (if they implement it) implies FPS. Speaking of which, a lot of us paid extra for the promise of free expansions, most notably the ship/station walking and planetary landings - granted, it's not a guarantee, but if you get people to give you money for an idea in advance, you are kinda expected to generally stick to it.

I was a fan of X series, and one thing that i really liked about that game was that during a dogfight, the enemy pilot would sometimes abandon their ship. At that point you could hop out of your own ship, float over to his abandoned ship and take control over it. I always thought how awesome it would be to be able to do that on bigger ships with boarding parties and activity take over the ship. Blast your way to the control room, release bulkheads, storm the cockpit and seize the ship. Im hopeful that Elite Dangerous will cure this itch.

I hope not, I already own, and not play X , a.k.a. the game that did nothing right. A bunch of half- ideas thrown together that made a stew my dog wouldn't eat.

Exactly. I'd rather have one polished, stable, fully working and feature-rich game (preferably - with spaceship pilots doing their thing in space, that's why I am here after all :)), than two half-finished, beta level worth messes. Because developing good FPS featuring dinosaur hunting on alien planets (citing Braben here, lol) and whatnot is like making whole other game.

Ideally, we'd get two great games well integrated into each other, but I am not sure that FDEV is capable to pull that off. In fact, so far no one could.

Which is why they're taking their sweet time to do it. I don't see any rushing.

FPS portion of the game is coming. No point in hoping that it doesn't because you're then hoping FD goes bust. It's their core vision for the game. The game is all about YOU. Not your ship.

I'd like the reassurance that I can disable the addon. FPS are bad enough as a genre, but can be done well (Arma III isn't a bad game after all), but a 3rd person console game?

No - just no.

Just don't buy it. It's a paid expansion.

I think the interesting thing with first person in ELITE is that it will take place in varying gravity. You'll spend a lot of time floating -- notice the handles to hang on to on the walls of the ships.

Personally I would love the planet side element to reflect Software Refinery's Hardwar gameplay. I think that would fit in nicely. Similar in style but different enough to give a change of pace for those who are fed up in space. Different system factions could battle it out on planets if in civil war state, sabotage missions, extended trading to supply the stations with the good they sell etc.

Well I can dream can't I? Loved Hardwar.
