Cross Platform Play: The Sequel

Yea nevermind you're right.. people already have trouble grasping the concept of open play.

I hate to say it, but not a lot of console players I personally know, understand how advantageous a mid/high-spec' PC can be. I cap', CAP', my FPS at 60. That's double what Xbox Elite gets. It's useful because you do get a grasp of the nature of your surroundings much more quickly that way, and headlook REALLY is quicker.

The capacity for PC users to customize their graphics can be a killer too. As I understand it, War Thunder players on PC could make the game easier by using ULQ settings; an option their PS4 opponents don't/didn't have.

even if they were to incorporate cross platform play, wouldn't they have to increase our instance sizes? we're capped at 16, right? and we all know how bugging/bad the framerate and stuff is with that, imagine how bad it'll be if we did go above the 16 cap.

Discuss?

Ok, short version.

I believe FD very much want to do crossplay since that is what they said back when the Xbox version was announced. Why wouldn't they want that after all? Back then it wasn't an option. They never gave a straight answer for why, but I would bet that it had to do with simply not being allowed to mix the networking by Microsoft back then. So yes, I pretty sure they will try to go for it now. When is another question...I'm guessing this is going to be the new "they will never support Oculus Rift" until they eventually announce it. :D

Different controllers have never been the deciding factor for not doing crossplay...and the same can be said about hardware limitations. These reasons are something the players have been using in their disscusions for or against. FD themselves have never said it. (The article when they talked about separating the CQC tournament competition between controllers and joysticks is NOT the same thing).

People on PC alone are already playing the game on wildly different rigs with all kinds of different control inputs. Many of them Xbox controllers. Some mouse and keyboard...some even just the keyboard. Yes, they exist believe it or not! ;) Also, many PCs will undoubtedly be even worse in terms of performance compared to an Xbox One. These machines have no problems playing together...or at least this isn't something people are debating about.

The main reason for not having crossplay have always been the walled off networks between platforms IMO.

This news changes that.

Because honestly, I don't see cross-platform between consoles & PC ending well. The inequality between current-gen' consoles & PC's are higher than ever, and that's in favour of PC's. I'm not keen on seeing that kind of uneven playing-field.

Weird, I see it as a beginning, not an end.

Uneven playing field? Nah.. any halfway decent Match Making algorithm will even the odds.

What else you got?

Yeah.. USA today is running that story a day late based on the link already put in the OP.

If you read THIS THREAD and the article linked to it from the Guardian, despite the poor detail in the story, you'll see that cross platform is not so rosy after all.

Microsoft wants all games developers to only use their Windows Universal Platform when developing games. That is what their working Cross Platform actually means.

What you linked, and the news being discussed in this thread are two different topics.

In the UWP games running on PC are solely on the XBL network. What I linked in the OP, and what's being discussed here if you cared to read and keep up on, is about networking games REGARDLESS of platform.

You're confused on both stories as they don't relate.

I still want ARMA 3 on the Xbox...but Micro$oft won't ever allow game modding on their platform, regardless of whatever cross platform noises they make. If I wanted to be relegated to Rocket League and likeminded, simplistic guff... I'd be excited about talk of Micro$oft's multiplatform ideas.

ARMA 3 won't ever happen, any and all games that survive and thrive on the modding community won't either. If I had the readies...I'd be polishing my gaming PC in between bouts of ARMA and a few flightsims :)

You know a lot of the amazing mods you're talking about would break a console?

I do... being an ex modder myself on the likes of Skyrim, Rise of Flight, Operation Flashpoint, ARMA2, IL2 Sturmovic....and a load of others besides :)

Still doesn't stop me wanting a few 'adult' games on the Xbox or support for the modding community cross platform. I can but dream :)

I really dislike the game, but Fallout 4 will support mods on XboxOne i believe.

Fair enough. I know too many people who think consoles somehow have the power of a top-end PC, see... YouTube is evidence of this.

Go on any mod review video for Skyrim, I guarantee loads of comments asking "How do I install 4K re-textures on my Xbox 360?"

SMH. :(

Yeah, I did a few savegame mods for Skyrim on the 360...console tweaks from the PC version, I used a commonly used cross platform savegame editor to convert the saves from PC back to Xbox. I had endless requests for graphics mods and got tired of explaining with the 360 being a closed system, they weren't possible without hacking the hardware... making it invalid.

Tweaking a savegame to give 100 smithing and enchanting etc is one thing...adding textures is quite another as you know...

We're still waiting.... :)

As an edit, if the Xbox ever supported it's own form of modding community rather than merely convert PC versions of the same thing... that's the dream. Give us the damned tools Micro$oft!... or at least give us the ability to mod games and we'll make our own.
