Cross platform play

Clearly this is where the world is heading.

I play Call of Duty on PC against my XBOX and PLAYSTATION brothers and sisters and its truly amazing to play a game with a player base so large.

And right from the outset I will say that FPS games are SO different in how they control, yet with just a little bit of smarts (ramped up aim assist) the game just works.

Elite just does not have this controller issue to worry about, and the benefits are so great. Imagine a world where Elite Dangerous: Arena actually had players. It tears me up just thinking about it.

It should be a choice, though.
I totally agree. It should be an option but not forced. Put it in between open and pg.

My opinions on this formed playing cross-platform in fps games where there is often someone running aimbot or godmode among other things I dont even know about as a console only player. ED would probably be nothing like apex or fortnite or cod with mods I suppose....

The thing is, for a game like Elite, controller and mod disparity exists on PC for PvP. Some PC players use controller, some have VR, some use voice attack, etc.

That's why I don't see it as being a barrier to enabling cross play, but I can understand if some people wouldn't want it, so just have a checkbox when you connect to Open: Crossplay enabled or disabled.

Anyway it's all moot as FDev just confirmed in an interview that they have no plans for Cross play. 🙈

I'm pretty sure fdev just doesn't have any plans for anything. Its always their answer.

There is too much choice in Elite, which makes the whole thing rather disconnected. I think David Braben was right in the beginning when he wanted to make it just open for all. Now the universe seems empty because everyone is playing under cover of pg, and to me it is crazy players can play in this offline mode and change the influence of a whole star system for other players and not even be seen doing it......not very realistic is it.

I'm against crossplay. I play on Xbox specifically to get away from the PC advantage. I have the game on PC and I know just how easy it is to setup macros with my Logitech mouse and how easy it is to aim with a mouse and how much easier flight assist off is, 2080 rtx and Samsung hmd. etc... I could own a console gamer. I have a rocking PC setup but I prefer Xbox console because forcing people to use approved controllers levels the playing field. It's a matter of being competitive.

That being said, I like the suggestion of enabling crossplay via a checkbox when playing in open. I could play with some of my PC or PS4 friends and that would be cool. However I do feel the moment we want to pew pew and PVP, I'd probably resent that checkbox.

I was playing World War Z, which is crossplay with PC, and yes they have things like auto-fire macros which make semi auto weapons significantly more powerful than on console, and headshots are typically 1-shot kills on the zombies (and the whole game revolves around hordes of zombies) so again PC gamers who can aim have a much easier time.
On Balance though, it's not like we cannot play together, and i dont feel like i'm a particular hinderance (and frankly some PC players have absolutely terrible skills).

re: "consoles holding back elite" and "GTX 3000spunkmaster shows more rocks" do remember that the minimum PC requirements may impact crossplay, not just the maximum.
So from FDev: https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=227

Below you can find the minimum and recommended system requirements for Elite Dangerous :
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 470 or AMD R7 240
Our minimum requirements aim to produce a minimum of 30 frames-per-second at 720p (1280x720)

I'd like to see how asteroid rings are with one of those cards, and are they generated the same with a min and max spec user in the same instance?

I would imagine minimum pc requirements = ps4 base console but idk

An insurmountable engineering problem

Please no!
PC suffers from tossers whose only goal is to spoil other people's fun. This is fine by FD.
On top of that with all tools available on PC it would be an unbalanced advantage. On PC you have VR, voice command and multiple control-interfaces available.

On a PS4 you can't even use AND a HOTAS AND a controller at the same time.
...but if you mean wearing a dress while playing, that's fine by me.
