Cross-play

Pretty much as I thought then. I would love a monster pc again for the vr mode in elite, but pvp against a mouse control like that would be not fun, and real fast.

I don't PvP accept in a private group with some friends but I have used M\KB instead of my hotas or gamepad(old xbox 360) and when used with FA off and lots of boost it does make aiming easier than the pad or hotas (even with joystick curves setup) but it does take a bit to master

PC only developed those "accessories" AFTER the game was put into that LONG Beta phase! It is wrong to say this was a development goal from the outset, because ALL the publicity was aimed at promoting playability on BOTH platforms from the start! "Cross-Play" was not the word used, (because it didn't exist yet!) but it WAS SUGGESTED the moment Windows 10 and XBox ONE were announced! It was the ONLY reason I bought into the new XBox platform! ...and had to wait a bloody long time for anything good to play on it! (you have no idea how many weeks were lost to Minecraft! ....lol)

I think theres a bit of misunderstanding here.

1. Crossplay has existed far before Xbox One and PS4, and its been a thing since 2003 or so for even consoles
2. Accessories existed far before this game was ever announced in terms of flight sim HOTAS, PC gamepads and of course mouse+keyboard
2. b. There is but two options for each console and that is gamepad or HOTAS One, HOTAS4 whereas PC has over 10+ in addition to mouse keyboard where theres hundreds
3. This game was never suggested as a Win10 title. No where did any developer make such a statement, even now, never has it been suggested that its Fdevs intent.

Ok, so I respect your opinion, but I follow this stuff too and never thought we'd have cross play when the XBOX One originally launched. Did we get any that first year?

I still remember when ShadowRun came out and was highly promoted for cross play between PC and XBOX 360, but it never took of with other XBOX 360 games.

That said, as a huge PC and XBOX gamer I had plenty of XBOX One games to play year one :)

1) Previous attempts at cross play worked but today it's really taking off
2) My Atari 2600 joysticks and paddles worked in my Commodore Vic-20, and vice versa. I still have a box full of 15 pin Game Port PC Controllers
2B) Two options to play Elite - I wonder if Elite on Xbox supports keyboards like Battlefield One and Minecraft?
3) While I wish FDev would add cross play I feel it's unlikely. But I do agree with industry experts that expect it to become the norm in the future.

A lot of folks seem to be forgetting that cross platform play already exists (existed) for E-D...namely between MAC and PC who share the same instance. As from Q4, of course...that state won't exist any longer with the discontinued direct support for the MAC OS, the same as it won't for Horizons and non Horizons owners as FDev have stated that there will no longer be a supported non Horizons version of the game once the Q4 update goes live.

FDev have stated that there will no longer be a supported non Horizons version of the game once the Q4 update goes live.

And, although it might upset some if they did (as maybe too soon?), I hope FD just update the base game to include Horizons for free.

That would maybe draw back some who only tried the base game, and will make proper crossplay an easier future possibilty.

Although some platform holders will likely hold out as long as possible in allowing true crossplay of course. But, maybe some government agency will in future decide that closed platforms might be putting too harsh, and unfair, restrictions on the consumer with arbitrary blocking of crossplay, when large chunks of the software are probably identical across platforms - i know, username conflict and all that :), but it could happen... Just look at the way lootboxes are [hopefully] going)

I hadn't heard that before so is there a link to a discussion about it ? I'd be interested to know if that means that people without Horizons will just no longer be able to play their game or if they just won't get any further updates / bug fixes.

Just thought to confirm the bold and underlined section is 100% inaccurate.
You'll find a good bit of gamers who own both a gaming PC and at least one console...but in terms of using a gamepad on PC, well some games require it so that's also inaccurate.

I had to quote and reply as I'm an early adopter on the xbox one but I've always had a gaming PC and just upgraded both to a new gaming PC and the Xbox One X this year.

*On TOPIC*

-From reading in many different forums, what I've found is not that games should offer cross-play but that customers like the idea of a developer who will allow it. In practical terms, many games should but when thinking of a flight sim or FPS, MMO those games and their interfaces and keybinds often bring up valid points of concern as to why it "should not be offered" widley.

Each game will have its own value towards and against why the developer should or shouldn't offer crossplay.
I would argue strongly this game is one that shouldn't offer it primarily due to the fact of VoIP, and peripherials and keybind limitations/offerings.

A funny observation tho, within a game I use to play a ton of, Elder Scrolls Online.
They have leaderboards and one of the hardest parts of the game that also offers universal scoring for individuals and group PvE content...in each category the group content was mainly even comparing PC to Xbox One for a couple of months.

In the solo PvE content, the Xbox One players had the best scores for over a year compared to PC and PS4...so whats funny is mouse and keyboard aren't better than a gamepad. In this specific example PC also had access to add-ons and UI customizations and extra info never available to Xbox One players in addition to being locked at 20-30 FPS on xbox vs 100+ on PC.

There is about 2,6 billions PC gamers to day, and about 631 millions console gamers. (out of the 631 millions, 200 - 250 millions is Xbox and Playstation)
And Xbox is running 60 fps not 20 - 30. And you don't need more than 25 - 30 fps, max 60! You eyes can't see the differens, the only thing that gonna happen, is you will miss more and more detailed in game and movie with higer fps, the eye can't keep up with the speed.

It means you won't get any content updates after Q4 if you only own the base game.

You will still get general fixes and stability updates. And af course you can still play the game if you don't own Horizons. Just no more content, pretty much how it is already.

No comment on the players for each as someone already addressed it.

Regarding you comment on frames, etc. Did you read my comment fully?
Youve misunderstand my references completely.

So this statement seems to imply more games are sold on PC than Consoles, which the experts don't agree with:

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/pc-games-sales-in-2017-are-almost-as-big-all-console-sales-combined/

https://www.pcgamesn.com/pc-game-sales-numbers-market-share-2017

In fact, they state PC game sales are just a tad smaller than Console game sales.

Meanwhile casual phone and tablet gaming is sneaking up behind us. Which is bigger, Call Of Duty or Candy Crush? Even Fortnite's success is much attributed to it's availability on mobile devices (though I personally can't stand playing FPS using a touchscreen).

Xbox friends, make some noise about this with Frontier too. We would all benefit from a merge of the Xbox and PS4 Galaxy, and the console chapter would finally be able to hold its own against the PC group. Let's hope that Sony opens up more in the coming months, and that Frontier push to make it happen.

MS never stood in the way of Frontier doing this for ED between the Xbox and PC.

So you gotta realize that this news regarding PlayStation does nothing to change the status quo.

They're separate because that's what FD WANTS. No Fortnight/PS news is changing that.

It's working this way by design.

It's funny because no one reads anymore, it is for fortnight (other select 3rd party titles too possibly)

It's the same with the "keyboard and mouse support for xbox" excitement, no one reads it's up to the game maker if they want to put it in.

Reading it's for no one anymore, people stopped reading this 30 words ago but hey if you made it this far good on you, and if you made it this far and can understand what I'm saying even better because there isn't one* thought in this post.

Edit, added the "e" to one

Yeah, Casual Phone/Tablet Gaming is quickly becoming the largest gaming category, but it's just not my thing.

So true.

But the news Sony is allow one game to have cross play is good news imo.

And while ED will likely never get cross play, maybe ED2 will?
