When I log into the game, I log into the game world. When I'm in the game world, I want the game world to make as much sense as possible. Whether the sense consists of the waving of the hands, is irrelevant. You learn about the quirks of the game's behaviour and incorporate those into the gameworld. Plus, from the pilot's chair, I have made many interpretations of ambiguities in that gameworld, in order to keep it making sense. This is not odd. We all do this in all games, to varying degrees.
Introducing other players to that gameworld will often not fit in how I am explaining the gameworld to myself. This is one of the reasons for instance I did not particpate in the many games at Beagle Point 2 at the end of Distant Worlds. Wouldn't fit into my game world. Instead I went to Beagle Point 3 and went to explore a huge foggy crater with the entire Milky Way above me as skybox. Another example is gankers at Shinrarta. Or Distant Ganks. It's only when I log in without the intention to emerge myself in favour of just clowning around, I'll expose myself to these.
That's why interacting with players in the forum is preferable. The forum's gameworld is this world, and all you little figments of my imagination do fit into that perfectly.
