Data port alarm

How does one download from a data port in a bar without getting shot at? I disabled a settlement alarm, cleared out a load of stuff, but was unsure how to handle the bar full of people. I figured as the alarms were disabled I should be ok, but no, as soon as I downloaded a restricted item, everyone in the room turns hostile and starts shooting me - and I'm not a violent man by nature, so I do dislike having to kill everyone for simply downloading a file.

As far as I can tell, there is no way of clearing a room passively, as venting the atmosphere just irritates the NPCs and they put their helmets on. Is there any use for it aside from fire suppression?

Huh. I thought disabling alarms also disabled data port alarms. Bug or ""improvement""?

Also, it might be a novel idea, but you know that you don't have to kill everyone right? You could just run.

So you stole a file from a settlement in front of people and didn't think that they'd go hostile?

If you're seen downloading the file or starting the download they turn hostile since you're stealing from them

When the d/l mechanics were changed, it was stated in the patch notes the alarms would not sound, but NPCs would still turn hostile if they saw you downloading. Now, how they do that I am not sure about, however it is not a bug, I am afraid: they see you stealing, it's a gameplay mechanic.
In those situations, I see how many illegal files are there to be downloaded, and download them one at the time, if the d/l time is short. I try to time it for when no one is looking my way, whilst I also crouch close to the bar, or round the corner in one of the entry corridors.
For data that requires 3-5seconds it is pretty doable (quite tactical).
If it takes more, I try to create a diversion by moving into an adjacent room/environment and shoot a weapon or a grenade and leave immediately: generally, the NPCs run out to investigate.
Otherwise, I just put my shields up, start the download and run around dodging the attacks until the d/l is complete, and then I run out.
Since the settlement alarms are off, I won't be attracting everyone on me, so I just run away and when things calm down I might get to another area of the settlement, where they are unaware of the commotion and still love me!

In some bars, the data port is found in one of three places usually. Either on the wall between the two short corridors or immediately next to the short corridors on the left or the right. It is possible to minimise line of sight of the bar occupants by standing in the corridor to start the download, running outside (and the download suspends), jumping on the roof and crouching roughly above the data port location. The NPCs will run around, search, but miss you. When the download is complete you can walk away and get on a ship. If the download time is short, you may get away with standing in the corridor.

Is it possible to trigger the download remotely then? After you've dived for cover?

Well I don't know about you, but when I'm a patron in a bar, I don't think I'd be able to catch exactly what file somebody was downloading off a terminal on the other side of the room... or, even care as I wasn't an employee!

But my honour!?

The mechanics to turn off the atmosphere is just silly as it is now, there is no point in doing it, it's a useless game mechanic .
What I do is I drop a grenade at the other end of the settlement and sometimes that will make them leave the building.

With the Settlement alarms turned off, illegal downloading doesn't trigger an alarm or bring everyone running, but I noticed the other day that is still caused a flashing light to activate above the data port while downloading. Legal downloads at another port didn't light up. Not sure if that's true for all data ports.

Yep, some data ports, especially in HAB buildings, have a red flashing light while downloading illegal data.

Never noticed, but when downloading illegal data even with alarms tuned off, i make sure i don't start the download when someone is looking and then dive behind a table or wall or something while its happening.

Paranoia apparently pays off.

The data port has a light on it as someone else said, so the NPCs will notice what you're doing by visual after they look at you, and you're stealing from them mate, so it doesn't matter what file you're taking they're gonna react hostile.

It does matter which data you download, only the ones with the alarm bell icon trigger a response if you OR the data panel itself are seen while the download is active. Like other people suggested, activate the download while nobody is watching and move to an adjacent room or even on top of the building if the range allows it.

Did you even read the post you quoted? Sorry mate doesn't seem like you did.

I can attest if you're spotted downloading any data, you get marked as hostile if you're seen while the download is ongoing. Which is what I said in that.

Read the bolded part again.

Yes I did, and I can attest that you can download the legal files (even with the alarm enabled) and the NPCs won't give a hoot.

That's not been the case for me, I've done non-illegal and the NPCs pull their weapons on me every single time.

I've stood in the building with the bar in a tourist settlement with 4-5 NPCs looking straight at me while I was downloading something inocuous like culinary recipes. Unless I managed to trigger some bug or glitch, they really didn't care.
