Dav's Hope In Odyssey

First place I went on foot was Dav's Hope - shame you can't get into any of the buildings. I don't reallly mind if it's dark ot not - I have lights - the mountaion going missing is a bit worrying though.

The alternative would have been no new planet tech. And as much as I bicker around in the forums at the moment, how should they have known 7+ years ago that their tech from that time will not hold up a decade later?
On the contrary much of Horizons planet tech looks more realistic and better then the new tech.
The Horizons tech holds up very well and looking back it is amazing.

Never said Horizons tech looked bad. It aparently just wasn't up to par anymore for generating planets for the legs part and - if the new tech works fine, as can be seen in a lot of places already - it looks much better than the old tech. Last thing as ever IMHO ;)

Also the relogging is just plain stupid, and who wants stupid? Some parts of ED are excellent. Dav's Hope is not.
Been into the game around three months this time around and absolutely agreed with the relogging being stupid. Then with the gathered mats and an engineered FDL i was brave enough to stand and fight the bully Anaconda NPCs that pulled me out of SC cause they wanted my whatever. Yeah, now i can hold my own and they run, SC away with hull at 4% on their last legs seconds from megadeath ;) Only to return 30s later with full health and a restored vigour and anger to do it all again. Stoopid dufus stuff.
Relogging - Wrong
NPCs returning fully restored in no time at all - Wrong

This is one of them times when two wrongs do make a right.
If you fix one you have to fix the other and then it begins and where would it end?

Ai seriously need some love, sorry strayed abit from the OP.

I still don't get why they moved it to the night side?

Which settler/corp in their right mind would build a station on the dark side and call it "Hope" :)
One that does not want to get their faces burned off with solar radiation?

[EDIT[On a slightly more serious note, IIRC the name was referring to the mining potential of the sight rather than anything else.[/EDIT]

The odyssey is a shame. FD boast of atmospheric planets, but they are absolutely not interesting and faceless, there is no real atmospheric (tautology) spirit of the Horizons

They explained the POI location changes when Odyssey was released.

So.

New planet generation tech came in for Odyssey, allowing them to generate the surfaces, atmospheres etc and provide placement sites for the new settlements.

Then, a complete pass was made on all 'placed' POI. Known settlements, guardian ruins, thargoid bases, crashed thargoids, Jameson wreck, Inra Bases etc.

If the new procgen planet surface had unsuitable terrain at the former location, a NEW location was found using a cunning search algorithm that had terrain suitable for the POI. In MOST cases this was measured within a small number of Km, but in others it was necessary to look further afield.

The same placement algorithm was used for the new settlements and existing planetary bases/starports.

This has led to Odyssey fixed poi's POTENTIALLY being in a different location to Horizons. No point putting Dav's hope in the middle of a mountain, or halfway down a small canyon, or teetering on the edge of a crater.

So in the horizons such locations were made by hand and they were organic and most importantly - logically - inscribed in the environment. And now it is a parody.

Hi All :)

I bet when atmospheres and wildlife come, every planet will be populated with millions of Bison and Wildebeest to roam the unending great plains.

On my trip to Colonia recently, swapping on the way between Horizons and Odyssey, landed on some planets that had vast areas much like deserts.
Terrain had rolling hills on some (in Odyssey). Looked, or appeared to have a mostly sandy surface with rocks and rubble.
I thought to myself what would set it all off would be a few Lizards running about, or something like them. Just a thought. :)

Jack :)

That's not what I said.

In Horizons they were in location A. Which was chosen because in THAT procgen planet surface that space was flat. All planet surfaces were procgen then, as they are now, but the results were different as the planets were upgraded to take account of better material composition, variety and geology.

In Odyssey that same coordinate under the new procgen is now not flat. And so it can't stay there.

Don't twist my words to suit your salty agenda.

All I know is that in Horizons Dav’s hope is in a beautiful location at the base of a mountain and in daylight, landing and driving around this iconic site is a pleasure in Horizons.
Odyssey not so much, dark and flat. Dav’s hope is such a popular place to visit I would have thought Fdev would have placed Dav’s hope in a place to show off the new planet tech.

Fdev think tank..

Dev manager: any other ideas?

Dev 1: I was thinking we could do something with planet surfaces...

Dev manager: interrupts dev 1 you think we need to completely shuffle the locations on all the planet surfaces? Love it, anyone else?

Dev 2: well I was thinking about the textures we use on the surf....

Dev manager: interrupts dev 2 don't tell me, you hate them, you think we should remove them almost completely right? Done.

Dev 2: wait that's not...

Dev manager: anyone else?

Dev 3: I know we decided against ship interiors but I was thinking at least for exteriors....

Dev manager: I already know exactly what you're thinking. Let me stop you right there and say it's brilliant. We get rid of exteriors so they stop asking for interiors.....

I died reading this.

Then I laughed.

Then I died again.

Well, that's all bad. No exteriors, no interiors.

Next, they will fill my suit interior with something I don't want. :poop:

Hey, at least it's still here.

Many moons ago, there was a crashed anaconda right next to the intended first barnacle discovered, down there in Pleiades. Good place to get materials, nice view, historical site.

And puf. Dissapeared after one of the terrain updates, never to be seen again...

I think regardless of any justification of why this was done, it's a pretty stupid idea to shuffle ALL of the planet surfaces in a game 7 years after its released and everyone knows their way around. If such and such is a good reason why it has been done now, it should have been done in the first place, not 7 years after that ship has sailed. You would think this is the first game these people worked on.

You don't see Rockstar rearranging Los Santos ever......

After going out to Dav’s hope for almost 5 years when I needed some materials this shows where Fdev is out of touch with how we play the game again.

I remember driving around Davs Hope many times, and when space legs were announced I imagined we'd soon be able to get inside those buildings and check them out, maybe find out more info about such places. Nope, they're just non-interactive props, like pretty much all surface POIs. Should have known better.

I was this close to buying Odyssey, even knowing that they wrecked VR completely, but I was like, "Wait, let me make sure Dav's Hope is still there and will be the same, but with legs...".

Guess I'll be keeping that fifteen bucks...

Dav's Hope is only in its original location in the Legacy game, i.e. the version that is no longer developed.

In the Live game, either Horizons or Odyssey, it's in the new location. Horizons Live uses the same planetary terrain generation methods as Odyssey.

Also: closed as a necro.
