Dear FD - Please reconsider having fuel for SRV's

Don't know if it's been said already in the thread, but a few days ago there was a livestream of the srv in action for the first time, and one of the guys said that they actually decided to add fuel to the srvs after all.

What Alex said.

We should all know by now that adding danger to Elite just isn't the done thing. While we can summon ships out of thin air, and suicide ourselves back aboard our ships if we never put any thought of planning into our SRV excursions, this refuel thing could end up being just another shallow gimmick.

One thing that is obvious by now is any amount of risk that is added to this game comes with several layers of cotton wool ! God forbid anyone actually had to take responsibility for ill-planned ventures!

No, you can't summon ships from thin air, you lose your ship if you selfdestruct and you have to buy it back. I think adding risk makes things more thrilling, fuel on srvs will be added in my opinion, it will work like ship fuel probably, once you go out of fuel you walk back to your ship and fly to your srv for refuelling, that's how I would do it, so you have to plan your exploration carefully, you just don't spawn your srv and get to the other side of the planet, fuel limit will make you use your ship to fly to another area, also atmospheric flight should cost much more fuel cause you have to counter gravity without any wings

Yeahh I think I watched it but it probably won't come at first release, we have no way to go back to the ship right now, we need to be able to walk, so I guess they'd better add walk on planets, stations and ships before fuel on srvs

What do you mean you have no way to get back to the ship? You have an SRV. Don't run out of fuel.

I was talking about self destructing whilst aboard an SRV that has ran out of fuel, not your ship. It was stated somewhere that dying aboard an SRV will see you respawn back aboard your ship... so the loss, as always in ED, is kept to a minimum.

As for summoning your ship and having it drop down close by, have you not seen the streams?

I do agree with you that players should be encouraged to plan carefully their exploration of worlds, and if implemented well, adding fuel to SRVs is a step in that direction. I just hope FD don't make it a shallow gimmick by negating the danger with easy get out clauses.

I would hope the feeling of intrepidation and apprehension we get when decending down to a surface will always be there because there is a real chance that if we screw up once there, it could be costly.

Yeahh that's the point, I think they should add the possibility to go back to your ship walking later, no more easy respawn by selfdestruction, more realism, also I would force ppl to rebuy the srv if it's lost or buy back by insurance, however I didn't watch the announcement where they say fuel will be in at release, I only watched a few videos of srvs going around and jumping with rockets, it will be fun

agreed, fuel will be there from release, I think you should just be forced to rebuy the srv if it gets destroyed and add the possibilty to walk back to ship and get fuel for the srv from it, I would remove all easy stuff, only insurance should be there, the rest should be configured like ships, so finite resources, maybe the possibility to mine certain materials and convert it to srv fuel...

Also I wonder what will happen if you are going around in srv and they attack your ship LOL

Walking is the easy respawn when I'm on a planet 35,000ly away from the bubble. I'm looking forward to nothing more than heading out into deep space and spending weeks out there with my SRV, and the idea that I may have to deal with mechanics built around the idea of never being at risk of being destroyed and sent back to the last station I docked at, in either my ship or my SRV, is utterly repugnant.

Well, walking is not an easy spawn at all, it's realism, you can walk away from your car in the real world, so it should be possible here, also it would be cool to be able to remotely fly your ship if needed, especially if your ship is under attack while you are out on the srv, all of this would add new exciting mechanics , like having to repair your srv or having to call for your friends to help you, hide from pirates or try to drive them away with your own remotely controlled ship etc...

Pretty sure you're forgetting that your suit's life support is tied to your vehicle. We don't have EVA suits.

I'm quite sure we have some sort of EVA suit, when you eject you are floating in space

Nope. Try again.

I don't have a problem with them requiring fuel - with the caveat that I'd expect a serious order of magnitude improvement on current fuel efficiency for these vehicles. On that do we have any idea what power source is being used to drive the SRVs? Or will they just run off super future batteries?

Personal bugbear of mine is sci-fi where, for unexplained reasons, they have less effective/efficient tech than today seemingly purely for story purposes.

Purely speculation but I'd guess Hydrogen fuel cells would make sense. They run on two ingredients ships already carry with them, are simple, reliable, safe technology over a thousand years old and have been used in manned space flight for centuries. The problem with fuel is less the efficiency and more the terrain and fuel tank. A modern land rover will do about 600 miles on 20 gallons of fuel, that's on country roads, not rough terrain. Asking a buggy to go a few hundred miles on a full tank makes sense to me, that's no where near the circumference of a small moon, but it's a good couple of hours and more than enough to go exploring for a while. That's the kind of performance I'm looking for in a recon vehicle.

Yes, I thought hydrogen fuel cells would be one route they would take as both oxygen and hydrogen would be harvest-able in deep space and not require a resupply from a station. For extra fun FD could add a mechanism for resupplying water from ice rings.

On the range I would note that the 2015 Toyota Miraj has a range of 500km (312 miles) on road.

What I'm probably getting at is that I'm uneasy at the introduction of more artificiality to the Elite universe. I'm fine with my fantasy space ship, which breaks the known laws of physics, requiring a refuel - they could be running off applied phelebotinum for all I care. But buggies are a known quantity - even the LRVs in the Apollo missions could manage 22 miles on the Moon by the time of Apollo 17 in 1972. That was running off two 36 volt batteries.

See above. You made a choice.

Edit: What's next, a campaign by Solo players to remove fuel transfer limpets from the game? Grow up....

ummm, yeah I made a choice, a VALID choice and I don't want MP nonsense getting in the way, as long as FD designs this with Solo players in mind I'm sure I'll have no worries, what I DO worry about is FD listening to the MP crowd FAR too much and let's be honest MP has had by FAR the lions share of add on goodies.

And i am grown up actually, just expressing my concerns.

So your concern is that because players in Open chose to interact in a meaningful way, you should speak out against any feature of the game which may allow them to do so again indirectly to prevent it from being possible for them, because it isn't possible for you?

Classy.

That is not the way I read it, they are basically saying the mechanics should not be done in such a way as to FORCE any given player to play with others if they do not wish to for ANY reason.
---
I am not sure how this might specifically apply in this instance and when walking around is added there is potential for a player to abandon an SRV and walk to their ship if necessary.
---
TBH whether you are out of fuel on the ground or out of fuel in space the end effect is the same if you are a single player thus the fuel or no fuel debate seems moot from a SP/MP perspective.

Spot on, hopefully with this extra insight Windscreen smudge will stop being so confrontational.
