Describe the next SRV (buggy)

Agreed but I suspect some here are overlooking one vital aspect - the physical size of the current SRV. Even the current one needs to have the wheels retracted into the body to fit into hangar via the hatch so I can't see anything larger than the current model we have. Apart from that aspect there is no reason why FD can't give up variants of the current SRV or at least let us modify or swap out modules to make the SRV more applicable to different roles.

Enter the Panther Clipper and other ships in the extra large size.

Something like my old Schwinn, but with run-flat tires and a solar shower.

That SLF door.

It would have to be something that you could potentially make your primary gameplay vehicle. Currently the game is 95% ship and 5% SRV. Imagine an SRV that reverses that. Have larger SRVs that have hard point and utility slots- stuff like that. Maybe even a skimmer bay. Introduce NPC SRVs to fight as well, the same way you would in space. Take a page from Mad Max- Epic vehicle chases across rugged landscapes with diverse weaponry, crash your opponents into the dirt and scavenge from the wreckage. Spot them on the horizon and engage in long-range combat.

To make it viable you would need to introduce some SRV routes. Long trails between colonies for trade, and the ability to haul FAR more tonnage than a spacecraft, or some other reason that makes it more viable to travel those routes by land than orbit.

The SRV is one of my favourite parts of Elite - and in VR it's wonderful (no idea why I don't get sick though!). So another SRV variant would be great, though I'm not sure I see it happening.

One that doesnt trip over a pebble, yet can happily climb over a rock. One that doesnt randomly spin. One that can travers bumps without getting a wheel stuck.

I still like it though, but sometimes you wanna do a Basil Fawlty on it.

For the VR people that get sick in the SRV... have you tried locking your view to horizon in the options menu? I'm not prone to VR sickness but if you check that option it's night and day... I drive at top speed for hours on end with no sickness at all.

About the idea of SRVs... I'd like an expanded role for them. I like Goooost's idea. I can think of settlements close by with chained missions, or planets with raiders where you have to wage war against them in SRVs.

About size, there could be SRVs that needed a 2-bay (or even a new 4-bay) module to fit in.

One limiting factor for the size of a new buggy is the cargo hatch through which it is deployed, so I like the idea of a larger buggy using the SLF bay. This could give a new purpose to some ships like the Keelback, and gives us the chance of a larger SRV.

Tbh I was expecting a new SRV to be out already, but here we are.

So much potential for the SRVs. Cargo carrier, miner, combat SRV, Recon SRV, give people a reason to use the 4 bay hanger rather than the 2...

If the paid-for expansion pack is atmospheric planetary landings - and the new tech for Lagrange clouds and foggy rings in 3.3 gives me hope - then perhaps we'll also get additional vehicles to drive on our newly-accessible real estate.

Well I absolutely adore the Scarab SRV that we already have, probably up there as one of my favourite things in the game. For bounding across the landscape, racing, and even planetary circumnavigation it's just perfect so anything new would need to feel very different and have a very different purpose. I reckon' some kind of tracked vehicle (I like the tank suggestions) that can carry a LOT more cargo (plus probably more reason for it to exist, like planetary surface missions) - or else maybe something a lot more combat focused. Of course the problem is fitting it into the ship. Even the existing SRV is a squeeze and has to fold up.

Oh, and for any fans of the SRV who are looking for a challenge, check out the Pomeche Ridge Challenge over here.

1 or more of these...

If they could change the "lore" and haver the SRV bay as printable environment, so you could print a Lightcycle or an Scarab or a Drone and then explore you own way - that would be great!

Skimmer. Driving the SRV with head tracking is the only video game experience I've had that actually makes me nauseous. I pity those having to drive SRVs in VR. Until Player Skimmers come along, I will be avoid surface activity as much as possible.

This. I find it interesting that there are no actual SRVs in the game outside our own. Planetary outposts are patrolled by Skimmers and Goliaths, both of which use a hover technology. It's interesting how the NPCs get better tech than we of the prestigious Pilot's Federation.

Along with the Skimmer, give us some camera customizations, as with the right FOV and height, piloting a Skimmer might just feel like space legs :D

I think the lack of NPC SRV's is down to the lack ofa decent NPC collision detection and pathfinding code.

I for one would love to have a bunch of marauding NPC's in Scarabs attack you as you are out doing a mission.

Or have ground based missions that yuou are asked to attack a convoy.

CMDR ToCoSo also submitted a few ideas many many moons ago about having roads between settlements, to add to NPC life on planets.

Maybe this will all be part of Beyond the Beyond of Beyond.....

True, so I was thinking only the big 4 can use a larger vehicle like a tank, with the dropship being the sole exception as I always felt that should be one of that ship's roles. Possibly type 9 as well. Just like only certain ships can use SLFs, only certain ships can use SCVs.
