Development Update 1 - June

I appreciate the effort you and the other CMs have gone through Arthur especially with how managment seems to throwing you under the bus. However, I'm sorry but that was a pretty anemic post. I'm not really surprised now why it was a post instead of a live stream. We got some lighting update screenshots but very little to no information on the other major issues. I had been holding out hope that frontier would pull this together but as of now its clear the game is going to remain broken for quite some time. At this point I'm wondering if management has been spending the last month stringing us along with just waits and there's an update coming that will answer your question in order to wait out the return window clocks on Odyssey.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to seeing solid improvements in-game and I hope the updates continue to be regularly posted so the community is kept up to date with progress and ETAs :)

Looking forward to finding out what's still to come for ED too, lots of stuff seems to have been crossed off David Braben's original planned feature list recently and it would be good to know what's still in the works.

Appreciate the update, thank you.

You've touched on two major pillars, re: lighting, and performance, but there's a bigger issue that hasn't been officially addressed (that I've seen?) regarding there being an issue concerning the rendering pipeline being messed up during the various stages of processing and displaying the image on screen. There were a couple of fairly detailed threads on the subject a few weeks ago, which provided some fairly extensive analysis of the process, though they eventually got buried.

From there it seemed apparent that something was going awry relating to the image data format or gamma being pre-multiplied where it shouldn't, or, I'm not entirely sure, resulting in a lot of the issues we have with the galaxy appearing way too dark, and more glaringly (or lack of), the HUD being quite noticeably much darker than it is in Horizons. The HUD is an emissive surface, and yet it appears dull and low brightness, even at the max setting. The bloom pass no longer gets applied to it either.

Any official word on that would be great. I know everyone has their own pet issues, but this one does literally concern everything you see on the screen and there have been a few updates to try and correct for it, without addressing the actual root issue?

So....

  1. Improvements to lighting - We fixed it!
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons - We're still working on it.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat - We don't know how to fix this.
  4. Anarchy factions and the BGS - We think we've fixed it.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey - We're still working on it.

Is that right?

Cheers,

Drew.

to quote myself from previous threads...

Just when I thought I couldn't be any further disappointed with the state of Odyssey, they go and prove me wrong....

Nope, not really impressive IMHO.

The biggest elephants in the room are still "under investigation".
...and if IIRC, known since the "Alpha". How long have these been "under investigation" and were there any concerns about them, in-house, prior to the "Alpha"? What am I getting at here? This product, from simply a technical perspective, probably should have been delayed. We're, technically, 3 months into this and they are still investigating core technical issues?

Thanks for the update team. I think many of us expected to get a glimpse into the "many features" that were supposed to be coming soon to Odyssey, so it's a bit weird to see just a list of challenges without a fix yet. I do appreciate and wish you continued that kind of communication - maybe a (bi)weekly post on what's top of mind even if the team does not have a fix yet - that would be the transparency so many of us wanted and hoped to see after you pledge for better comms.

With that said, it's utterly unacceptable that whoever is leading this decided it's best for the team to focus on console port next - Odyssey is clearly in an advanced Alpha, there's little content that's not simply a grind and they want to leave it on low simmer fix-wise and try to get the cash of console players? It's like the company is actively working to turn their customers against them.

It needs to be spelled out - PC playerbase are the customers who were sold half a product and are now being told not to expect getting the rest of it, they might get a few fixes for the top voted issues from the tracker that's also barely working. How are you able to get any new business and partnerships is beyond me.
PS I do understand there's a number of people that enjoy what's on offer - completely get that and won't hold it against you. I've moved on to expect more in 2021 when games cost more, require more time to reach "the good part" and incorporated microtranscations for things that would have been available free of charge a decade ago.

Fly safe, I hope the Leads on this & Management will have a change of hearts at some point and start treating ED with respect it deserves.

Yeah, I think now @Bottom Hat can haz my stuphz.

So what is patch 5 bringing? or did I miss something
You didn't miss anything, try the Patch notes tomorrow ;)
Dude, you haven't played my text adventure, Fadeout on the C64, created with the Quill? Commodore User gave it 9/10 - Odyssey can't be much more complicated! :)
I had the quill too!
... without giant red circles around them,
The big red circles are only on bubble bodies, I've never seen them in Colonia environs... :ROFLMAO:

Let me correct you ... they have not promised ship interiors, and I'm not talking about promises, but about delivering.
7 years ago, it was part of their vision.

it was even stated that all assets and ships were modeled and built in such a way that make it possible to add it later on.

fastforward to Odyssey, "we have no plans" and "we need to rework the whole game to add them" so both statements by M. Braben was a complete and utter . and if plans change why not communicate it with us?

after Odyssey and the way they talk about the game and what's next, do you really think they will be adding atmospheric planets? LOL... that would be so much more work than ship interiors.

Without wanting to downplay the difficulty of UI and cockpit lighting changes, from day one after release I though they were both easy wins that didn't involve challenging tasks from a technical standpoint and would be addressed soon. But the rest is kind of "we are still working on it" or "we don't know how to fix it yet". I'll wait until tomorrow's patch notes for a better judgment, but I think I'm going to be decomssioning my carrier and order some dust covers for my ships pretty soon.....................

I would so like Frontier to have come up with more here, especially regarding the future updates, where they said ... nothing.

Anything would be better than nothing.

A few suggestions:
1) Outline what went wrong at launch after a an OK alpha phase: why did it all blow up?
2) Some more technical details about planet rendering and performance issue - what are these pathways exactly?
3) Future plans: mention at least one example of additional content coming in Odyssey and a best guess for Console release.

Plenty more could be said I'm sure.
