Development Update 1 - June

I be totally honest short term goals are nice and good, but we need to see what is coming in the future.

I'm sorry this post is too vague. Where is showing off the future things ? You PROMISED and I can not highlight this more than enough, that you are more open about things, but sadly not showing anything what is in the plans (possible) shows you actually do not have roadmap (at least this is what I feel).

Show us what is coming for the Odyssey and reason why it was worth of spending close to 40 euros. What is equal of full polished product price in the gaming industry.

Hi there, thank you for the update!

With regards to the performance and optimisation issues, I fit within the Minimum and Recommended Specs (Just below the recommended specs), and as other CMDRs have reported similar builds and still reporting sub-20fps and massive strain on hardware, and still little to no change within LOW-HIGH/ULTRA presets in trying to help with alleviating this.

Is the focus only on players who have high-spec PCs?

Are we still getting performance and optimisation updates from now until console releases? Or will tomorrow be the last update with regards to optimisation and performance and players will have to wait it is released and wait for the game to be playable?

Is there any information you could give us to help alleviate our concerns on this matter? and can you confirm that it is still your intention to have Odyssey reach specification parity as Horizons? or are the PC specifications advertised for Odyssey is what will be going forward? Is it fair to assume that people who are not able to play Odyssey now, won't be able to play Horizons when the two clients/builds merge when Odyssey is released on Console?

Sorry for the barrage of questions. I have been asking these questions for a while and there doesn't seem to be an answer at all with regards to them.

Thanks for you and your teams hard work there Arthur! I apricate all that you do.

Many thanks & Kind regards! x

This post is a collasal waste of time.

The fact they can't even attempt to give us hints about the new features that could come out after the bug fixing is telling that this game is being mismanaged as hell.

They could just post a half ass silhouette of a Panther Clipper to tease us for example. But they can't even be bothered to do that.

I don't blame the CMs though, it's definitely the fault of the higher ups.

This is a joke, right?

1. No Dev stream
2. How much more of our hard drive space do you guys want? When will optimisation occur?
3. Stars look fuzzy - every time you scoop it's further evidence the game is broken.
4. Better communication = no access to Devs, fewer streams featuring news and an inability to engage the community more proactively as promised.
5. We might fix it eventually, until then suck it up - we've already got your money.

Thanks

My English is not good, but does this mean that from tomorrow we can be bored to death with an average of 60 FPS for the next few years, with the contentless DLC? Is nothing more coming? Is Elite Dangerous done?
It should at least be a clear sign that Odyssey is indeed feature-complete.
For what's coming next... They just don't know yet. Will Elite still be profitable enough to justify spending resources on it after Odyssey is fixed then brought on console? That depends on a lot of factors.
I'm sure they have ideas, the world is full of people with good ideas.

This is truly dissapointing. I was expecting some info about future Odyssey features, as you PROMISED in your streams. I kept my expectations low because I know how this is. But dude... How can you promise a "developer news" but instead just write a post talking about the update 5 we already knew it was coming? Update 5 should have been the topic of yesterday's Supercruise news (and it barely was), and it's going to be the topic of tomorrow's stream, so was already covered. This "developer news" should have been about what to expect about Odyssey's future features. The long-term roadmap, as you said.
But no.
It's good you being honest, but your honesty can't only be you saying "we can't tell you anything yet" or "there's nothing planned". If FDev has developments plans for Odyssey, like station missions or thargoids on foot (not to mention walking around our cockpits or zero-g), that's we need to know about to keep the enthusiasm with this mild Odyssey launch.
I love Odyssey but I feel it lacks important things. If you tell us NOTHING about Odyssey future, we can think that indeed FDev doesn't have anything planned. And thinking that is really, really bad for both the game and the community.

Will there always be an earth like on the right after update 5?
Not sure if I would like dat...

Thanks for the updates Arthur. Hope tomorrows update has decent amount of performance fixes. Looking forward to shared ground on foot missions! Great idea sharing build screenshots and info in future posts really like that.

I just knew Frontier would release this at the end of the day and then go home and ignore the concerns. The only thing that is apparent from this update is that the project needs more developers, whether you can hire more or borrow them from other departments. You keep spouting about how successful Elite is for your financials but refuse to actually invest in development or direction for the game.

What's more sad, is that people paid at least £30 for this and there isn't a lot of content here, or at least it's been planned and not finished aka a season pass model. Which you explicitly said Odyssey wouldn't be.

Greetings Commanders,

We would like to share with you our first monthly development update since the launch of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The purpose of these monthly news articles is to give a regular, moment in time, updates on how development within Elite Dangerous is progressing. The aim is to a provide a factual look at community requested features, issues, and a look forward at what the team are working on next.

Please note: the nature of these updates will be ‘warts-and-all’; you will likely see work in progress screenshots and content taken from WIP builds. That means that all information and assets shared are subject to change.

We will be looking to share more information on development challenges as well as talking about progress that has been made in other areas. Making games requires a large number of people working closely and in sync. There will always be a need to prioritise and focus development efforts on specific features and content for the biggest benefit of our wider community. Despite an incredible team, we simply wouldn’t ever have enough time to add all the awesome things that are requested by the community. As such, we hope that by being open about these requests, we can avoid giving the wrong expectations and everyone can be informed and up to date with where development is at that time.

So let’s get started…

June Update

Since this launch we have had to adjust our focus and the development team have been working incredibly hard to review and address as many reports and issues as possible. We have done this through a number of early hotfixes and a subsequent series of five game updates, including the one that will be deployed tomorrow.

Throughout these five updates we have made over a thousand changes, fixes, and additions to Odyssey based on your feedback, including in key areas such as:
  • Lighting, brightness and gamma
  • Character and Outfitting UI
  • Galaxy Map navigation and found organic data tracking
  • Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations
So, what is next for Odyssey?

As previously stated, Update Five will be deployed tomorrow and will deliver on more key areas of focus and feedback that we have received. These include:
  • Shared missions – allowing you to work together with other Commanders on the ground and share mission rewards

  • Overhauled cockpit lighting

  • Visual improvements for neutron stars
  • Redesign of ship outfitting interface
  • Rebalanced drop rates for rare items
Issue Tracker
Another area we like to keep an eye on is our Issue Tracker. This allows us to see and measure the key issues within the community, as voted for by you. We know that many of you are keen to have an update on the top issues. So we’ve listed out the top five items below and given some direct thoughts and feedback on each one of them.

Current Top Five:
  1. Improvements to lighting (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33174)
    • Many of the lighting issues have been improved across previous updates, the last major set relate to the update of ship cockpits which will be in Update 5. We will continue to monitor your feedback.
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32854)
    • Pathways have been identified to improve this and a team is actively working on this area.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34834)
    • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives. Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.
  4. Anarchy factions and the BGS (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35479)
    • After extensive investigation we found that missions against anarchy factions were too impactful and this has been addressed. We are making further tweaks with Update 5 and will continue to monitor this issue closely to see if further action is required.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey
    • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
Future Progress: The Longer Roadmap

As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time. We understand that this may not be as much information as people may have wished for, but we hope that the open and transparent nature of this update means that you’ll bear with us while we pull those together. What we can say, is that through these monthly updates, we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.

Livestream

As you may have seen from the weekly schedule, I will be jumping into Elite Dangerous tomorrow and playing through the most recent update with Bruce. Please come along and join us where we can discuss today’s update.

Hi Arthur,

Sure I'm not the first to ask this - but it is one of the main issues of odyssey

Re:

5. FPS performance in Odyssey
  • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
Can we expect an update to the PC version before the console version is released, or will they be released at the time of the console release?

Cheers.

First off THANK YOU! And .. Please, keep these coming, this is something we need, more over we crave(!), maybe even a bit more often, like 2 weeks, just to keep us satisfied with news.

Also, yes there is some disappointment, because it does feel like you are not telling us about any new content coming up in the future.
The above things were all stuff you already told us yesterday and even weeks prior. I am presonally grateful for this too, but man, I was waiting for something else too..
Like a roadmap of new things added later..

Such as:
  • Potentially new vehicles, ships
  • Potentially new mission types
  • Potentially updated 3D ship models (DiamondbackEx looks a bit janky upclose, def not up to today's standards, too chonky exhaust lamelles etc..)
  • New Social spaces, online only events, like Star Citizen's latest online Expo.. these things are known not to be too difficult to implement, just add them to the lift options, we don't even want to see outside, just gather around some community event in-game..
  • etc...

These small player friendly initiatives will be embraced, please do make and effort and a bit of extra investment financially, we would so love it very much..

I am not sure why and what is going on in Frontier behind the curtains, I suspect a potential understaffing issues, I certainly would recommend assembling a smaller team only designated on extra new content, new 3D models, new vehicles, new locations, new content... they could handle this with higher priority, and help out when they are not creating new content.. (say once every year there could be a content expansion, 1 new ship and a new vehicle, a new location to visit, a new -temporary- community area to discover)

I also know it is probably not as easy to do, but currently our beloved community is riddled with toxicity and hate towards Odyssey, I hate that some of my friend just outright say "I hate it!" when I ask about teaming up in Odyssey.. Adding extra smaller chunks of extra content will resolve this I am 100% sure. Just please give us small things to cherish..

I am fully supporting Elite, and will always do, but the game IS BEHIND compared to many of its competitors in this regard.

We as the community desperately beg you to share these with us, it has not to come out in weeks, we can wait, but to know that these things are coming would be of great calming effect on the larger community.

Yours truly,

CMDR A.J. Crimson
(pka. CMDR Arazriel)
