Development Update 1 - June

fdev.png

Greetings Commanders,

We would like to share with you our first monthly development update since the launch of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The purpose of these monthly news articles is to give a regular, moment in time, updates on how development within Elite Dangerous is progressing. The aim is to a provide a factual look at community requested features, issues, and a look forward at what the team are working on next.

Please note: the nature of these updates will be ‘warts-and-all’; you will likely see work in progress screenshots and content taken from WIP builds. That means that all information and assets shared are subject to change.

We will be looking to share more information on development challenges as well as talking about progress that has been made in other areas. Making games requires a large number of people working closely and in sync. There will always be a need to prioritise and focus development efforts on specific features and content for the biggest benefit of our wider community. Despite an incredible team, we simply wouldn’t ever have enough time to add all the awesome things that are requested by the community. As such, we hope that by being open about these requests, we can avoid giving the wrong expectations and everyone can be informed and up to date with where development is at that time.

So let’s get started…

June Update

Since this launch we have had to adjust our focus and the development team have been working incredibly hard to review and address as many reports and issues as possible. We have done this through a number of early hotfixes and a subsequent series of five game updates, including the one that will be deployed tomorrow.

Throughout these five updates we have made over a thousand changes, fixes, and additions to Odyssey based on your feedback, including in key areas such as:
  • Lighting, brightness and gamma
  • Character and Outfitting UI
  • Galaxy Map navigation and found organic data tracking
  • Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations
So, what is next for Odyssey?

As previously stated, Update Five will be deployed tomorrow and will deliver on more key areas of focus and feedback that we have received. These include:
  • Shared missions – allowing you to work together with other Commanders on the ground and share mission rewards

  • Overhauled cockpit lighting

  • Visual improvements for neutron stars
  • Redesign of ship outfitting interface
  • Rebalanced drop rates for rare items
Issue Tracker
Another area we like to keep an eye on is our Issue Tracker. This allows us to see and measure the key issues within the community, as voted for by you. We know that many of you are keen to have an update on the top issues. So we’ve listed out the top five items below and given some direct thoughts and feedback on each one of them.

Current Top Five:
  1. Improvements to lighting (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33174)
    • Many of the lighting issues have been improved across previous updates, the last major set relate to the update of ship cockpits which will be in Update 5. We will continue to monitor your feedback.
  2. Degraded terrain textures compared to Horizons (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32854)
    • Pathways have been identified to improve this and a team is actively working on this area.
  3. Planetary features that appear to repeat (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/34834)
    • We understand this is an important topic within the community. As mentioned at the start of the article, we want to share the challenges as well as the positives. Investigations are still ongoing, however, it must be said that this is proving to be a very significant technical challenge. At the current time we do not have a workable solution. BUT, investigations will continue and we will keep you updated.
  4. Anarchy factions and the BGS (https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35479)
    • After extensive investigation we found that missions against anarchy factions were too impactful and this has been addressed. We are making further tweaks with Update 5 and will continue to monitor this issue closely to see if further action is required.
  5. FPS performance in Odyssey
    • Pathways have also been identified with performance and the team are actively working on this area.
Future Progress: The Longer Roadmap

As mentioned in our previous post, our aim was to focus on the initial set of updates and then turn our attention back onto console. There’s no doubt that the additional development work on these updates and community requests pose a challenge on our previous plans and timelines. We are actively investigating, reviewing, and remeasuring the further roadmap but these things will take a little time. We understand that this may not be as much information as people may have wished for, but we hope that the open and transparent nature of this update means that you’ll bear with us while we pull those together. What we can say, is that through these monthly updates, we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.

Livestream

As you may have seen from the weekly schedule, I will be jumping into Elite Dangerous tomorrow and playing through the most recent update with Bruce. Please come along and join us where we can discuss today’s update.

Really want ship interiors. Roadmap for that feature to be implemented?

Because I can run Odyssey, I've only dropped to Horizons twice since launch, the first to compare the same body in both, and to bring my FC to the bubble from Colonia (to get acquainted with the foot engineers, and pick up some pre-engineered kit) so am quite 'at home' with Odyssey, warts & all, but wish that it just didn't push my GPU quite so hard on foot!

Lighting is poop, likewise most of my PJs & decals are now bland (Lunar Hunter is pathetic in Odyssey - no emissive property at all) and even the Odyssey Raider suit colours are muted in comparison to the store! (Wonder if they will look any different tomorrow?)

I'm doing the foot content just because I find it fun, so won't bleat too much about it, although am happy to rant about stupid requirements for engineering, made even worse in the DLC than the main game!

I imagine Surface Thargoid CZs will appear after (if?) the console version releases... but won't hold my breath.

So, yes, I'm happy playing Odyssey as it does scratch the right itch for me, but there is so much amiss with what has been delivered which detracts from th eoverall experience.

Being told that the issues with planetary tech are 'challenging' and being given no idea when, or if, those issues will be resolved doesn't inspire much confidence either, particularly as we were led to believe the final version was to be so much better than the alpha...
Yeah I mean I always boot into EDO (though loading up Horizons a couple of times, in order to outfit my ships, did sting a little because everything felt so smooth and clean) - I paid for it so may as well try to enjoy it - as you say, warts & all, but when I ask myself "would I miss EDO the expansion" the answer would be a "no, not really" because of the little meat on the bone ... I like walking around new planet tech planets, but the actual gameplay is minimal (plants) I could do the same in the SRV later when Horizons gets the up/downgrade treatment.

Likewise for settlements; they're ok but as someone said before, they feel like they're made for NPCs, not for the player, so it does have a sense of pointlessness to visiting them because the only in-game reason is to upgrade your EDO gear. Concourse, nope. And I know the scale of ships now (that was a major draw for me for legs, but the novelty has worn off by having to run between ship and concourse constantly).

But yes, the OP has not filled me with confidence, just... resignation really - we'll be stuck with the performance issues, we'll be stuck with the wonky planet tech, no idea if the renderer issues get addressed at all beyond cockpits (doubt it now having seen Arf's post). Looking pretty bleak with a long content/update drought ahead of us by the looks of it.

And just to add, I'm still very salty about the main trunk line. I feel I've been had, proper. Not happy about this but there's obvs nothing I can do about now but to remember this for the future.

So this is an update regarding the fixing of things that were never supposed to be broken in the first place.
So not a single specific piece of information regarding new features? Nothing new to look forward to in the future?
I thought we were supposed to get information or at least some of it, a word or two, regarding the additional gameplay features of Odyssey?
Or was I too naive?
This.. quite sadly

Lame.

Basically this development "update" is a monthly review:

- We released five patches since launch to fix bugs we knew about in the alpha

- We have a five player issues, all of which are not issues in Horizon but were added to Odyssey

And now work begins on the Console version?

Get use to an Extremely Negative rating on Steam with this kind of progress.

  • "Performance – We know there is more to do here, but we are pleased to see some players reporting notable improvements for particular configurations."
I would like to know where are those reports of NOTABLE improvements.

Well that was short and to the point, but sadly not covering a lot of the real issues at present.

Looking forward to the patch notes - "It was dark. It is now a little bit lighter."

A joke to finish I think:

After reading that quite short post, I may have now discovered that the middle name of Arthur is a biblical one - Job.

Now hers something to think about, we have seen that all their future updates revolve around issues with their new dlc and they have no future plans around that as of yet, now let me ask if Odyssey went smoothly would that mean that nothing was coming after it until a much later date?

It would be either two options.

1. They knew Odyssey was going to release in a mess and are using it as a way to take longer with future content, thus releasing full price finished dlc at Beta lvl production standards.

On this point their "Great plans going forward after it releases" was nothing more than updates and fixes to prolong the life of so far content and playability (What we have now until console release) with no future being shown just yet (After telling the community a road map of content was coming)

2. They didn't know Odyssey was going to be such a mess (Their claim) yet if this is the case then had no plans for future content/updates thus also bad as they where lying about "Great plans going forward after it releases"

On the point of number two, if they had no idea about the release going to be so bad then why are they then saying no further update on the future as if it went well they would have had stuff they could be showing us now only with an extended release period that they wouldn't need to date, Adleast we would see what's coming when everything in the mess is fixed. (No road map at all about what could have happened after release and is now postponned)

Only these two options are relevant while showing either way Fdev have lied or are being deceitful to their player base regarding future content or have no idea what they are doing but avoid telling us that with vague answers.

Also please note I exempt CM's in this as they do a fine job but are just left in the dark nearly as much as us.

The FDev developer goes to finish the last edits and push the changes to production for release

Likewise for settlements; they're ok but as someone said before, they feel like they're made for NPCs, not for the player, so it does have a sense of pointlessness to visiting them because the only in-game reason is to upgrade your EDO gear
I believe some fun can be had at settlements without the duress of engineering mats...
I'm moving my other account back to Colonia in a week or so, so if you are ever in the area and fancy doing some foot stuff 'just because', I'd be glad to team up and visit the odd settlement with my freshly engineered suits & guns 🥳

The CMs were having some fun last night when their mission didn't work so were just killing the citizens for sport - just not very efficient at it 🤷‍♂️

I'm going to push back a little here: nobody in the CM team has any say as to what they get to communicate. Arthur is just the guy who is paid to tell us what the higher ups want him to say. If they first tell him to promise us X and Y, and then tell him to not do it anyway, that is what he has to do. Don't shoot the messengers, shoot at the guys behind them.
With respect, I don't fully agree with this. While I appreciate the fact that he is taking instructions from the higher-ups, he isn't a mindless automaton and as the Lead CM, he can question and challenge as it's his credibility on the line as well as FDevs. Certainly if I was in his shoes I wouldn't just regurgitate what I was told to an unhappy baying mob and would most definitely push-back on using such language as "promise", "we will", etc Then of course we are back to the mumbled woolly language - if anything at all - which tells us nothing and guarantees us even less.

I appreciate it's a difficult set of circumstances at the moment, but it's one of their own making - and one they have to fix with appropriate communications.

Thanks for the offer, might take you up on it if I'm in the neighborhood again.

Yeah I did something like that last night, tried to shoot up a settlement with a view to raid it for mats (i.e. brute force scavenging), got swarmed and ended up 100Ly in detention, followed by 10 minutes Apex ride back alt tabbed out of the game. Twice. Still learning the AI response, bit of a drag that the game flow is getting interrupted by the unwieldy C&P design though.
