Unless everyone buys Odyssey, the problem is not solved.

Though even before this new Horizons / Horizons split, Open has been terrible lonely for me for a couple of years now, with the exception of very very VERY rare bounty hunting CGs. These days I might as well log into solo if I'm going to play. It's a night and day difference between this and a proper MMO like ESO.
Not being like an MMO is a good thing....
Mildly-multiplayer-online would be nice instead. (And is why ESO made me really grumpy when it took people's desire for co-op Skyrim and turned it into Guild Wars: Tamriel Edition).

Hi Factabulous,

What Sally has posted is correct. When the option to launch in 4.0 is made available to all PC players, instancing will be separate between 3.8 and 4.0 (as it has always been) AND separate between Horizons and Odyssey on 4.0. There's no final state to confirm in situations like this which are always open to re-evaluation. If the situation changes, we'll make an announcement to that effect.
This news is sorely disappointing - the initial instancing split between 3.8 and 4.0 has weighed heavily on facilitating both planned and unplanned multiplayer-oriented gameplay. To introduce yet another instancing split, rather than encouraging all players to instance together in 4.0 (irrespective of Odyssey ownership), severely increases the difficulty in enjoying the game from a community-based, multiplayer-oriented playstyle. For those of us who play Elite for the emergent gameplay afforded by the unpredictability of a shared player-populated universe, introducing additional instancing splits (rather than easing them) leaves us (PvP-oriented or otherwise) with little reason to continue playing the game we so enjoy.

I fully understand that this will not adversely impact the majority of players, who often play alone or in smaller friend groups. However, as you move forward in the coming weeks, please consider the damaging impact such an implementation of Horizons 4.0 would have on entire communities of dedicated players who deeply value regular interaction with the larger Elite community, in- and out- of game. As a long-time moderator and member of the over 47,000-member Elite Dangerous Community server on Discord, I sincerely feel that the current instancing split between Horizons and Odyssey has been greatly detrimental to the overall health of the game's community. I sincerely hope that you will reconsider your current course of action and support the long-term health of Elite's multiplayer community by allowing all players, Horizons and Odyssey, to instance together in 4.0.

Thank you,
-Warhawk-

"far better optimised" my PC beats recommended specs and I get 20fps on a surface CZ.
i guess his point was "but hey at launch you had 17 FPS so, progress yay!"
it is better optimised(if it wasn't after a whole year they should've given up by now), but way, WAY far from ideal for some, i bought with the idea they gave (which ironically i can't find anymore) that it would run on horizons capable hardware, and even tho im within recommended specs, i can't for my life get stable 30, and that's a year and 3 months later!!

i seriously cannot believe i was able to play through red dead redemption 2 with stable 50~ on medium to high while blasting through saint denis police, but i can't have 20+ on settlements at odyssey, on a barren planet. hell marvel's spider man is having a better time with much more elaborated graphics.

the good news is i can still play the basegame i paid for since they won't turn off 3.8 so soon, but i wasted money on the expansion, which i heard on the beginning "give it some time eh? it will get better" and i'm waiting. maybe on it's 2 year anniversary the update will finally bring stable 30fps to commemorate.

This all sounds like a step towards bringing the 4.0 versions, Hoizons & Odyssey, together. I know it's more likely just bringing those who haven't bought Odyssey into Odyssey's realm, but my hope, albeit a thin one, is that Horizons 4.0 actually has planet landscapes looking like those in Horizons 3.8...i.e the awesome hoonable terrain being kept. And then, in future, that terrain making its way into Odyssey, and then bringing it all together.

It makes sense they do this step, before bridging the instancing between the variations. This allows them to get an idea of how many players even choose to run Horizons 4.0. If after a while, they find players are moslty in Horizons 3.8 and Odyssey 4.0, but not in Horizons 4.0, then they may keep it how it is with Horizons being it's own thing, even if no further debeloping done on it. And if that happened, if I were them, I'd improve and develop Horizons 3.8 along with Odyssey 4.0.

Looking forward to 4.0...keep it up!

This post?
16. Will Odyssey have the same graphic impact as the current engine in terms of performance or will you need to upgrade your video card?
Odyssey will be optimised to run on your current setting for Elite Dangerous.

Yes, that's exactly what could be a motivation for players (who willing to) to upgrade. In return much less disappointment due to dividing player base and less versions to support.
I like the idea. Let them run around, but unable to do anything, to use any Odyssey station facility. They get to look, not touch....and might upgrade. Sadly FDEV marketing doesn't seem to be that clever.

This is hillarious.

Reading this thread I see more players, which want to "force" other players into buying new dlc, than developers :D

I see real cool ideas here, like "ody has 1 year so everyone should buy it, cut off hzn, why they get anything".

I bought this game at 2018, and to be fair I never seen such big amount of stupid ideas about forcing people into hzn it. At least "vanilla" players could meet hzn players in space :)

Now we havent even it. Solution? "buy new dlc huehuehue". New dlc, which after more than year still has poor performance. Sure, it is progress. It is progress from level of crashes, freezes and tons of bugs with 10 fps to game without freezes, with less bugs, and 20 fps. Impressive :)
Clap, clap.

But remember.

:ROFLMAO:

I think, that after more than 1 year I can say, that it was lie.

Not the only lie they have told regarding Oddesy

Well, can you fault them?
I cannot - on my machine both Horizons and Odyssey are running on Ultra - same settings. 😂 😂 😂
They didnt said same FPS, but in my case its also the same FPS since i locked it to 60 😂

yup , same boat , also saw the will run on horizon capable hardware , also thought give it time they will optimize it soon , sadly not

Is it possible to create another branch, where only commanders with names starting with N, P and Y, or with a number in their name, will be segregated?
Frontier clearly isn't trying hard enough to fragment the ED community. Here are some categories I bet they haven't even thought of yet:

Split by configured language.
Split by country.
Split by ISP.
Split along timezones.
Split between Frontier, Steam, and Epic launchers.
Split between HOTAS and KB/M.
Split between Intel and AMD.
Split between Geforce and Radeon.
Split between male and female players.
Split between right- and left-handed players.
Split between those who skip the intro video and those who don't.
Split between doomsayers and white knights.

Once they implement instancing walls between all these categories, playing in open will finally be safe.
