It depends on how they want to release the next DLC, if Odyssey is not required as a stepping stone then there will be a bridge from Horizons too. I speculate they might want to offer an upgrade path to the next DLC direct from Horizons after considering there are 8 million Horizons owners out there. Forcing people to buy Odyssey to play the next DLC ? Does that chained DLC thing ever happen? I guess you can market bundles but will that annoy existing Odyssey owners if that happens say next year? Or you offer a discount on the next DLC to Odyssey owners? The fact that they are trying to move Horizons to codebase 4.0 since the beginning suggests that disappointing Odyssey sales is not a factor though and I have found it very curious how they plan to bring in more premium content as from a marketing and content gating view it seems quite complicated.
well with odyssey, they rolled Horizons into the base game. so basically anyone still on the old original base game then got horizons for free. So IF they do another DLC expansion, they could potentially do the same thing. Roll Odyssey to be the base game, then sell the next expansion on top.

But....
the business plan is to pay for long term development by releasing DLCs,
Horizons was the first after what, just over a year after base game launch.
Fact: They considered Horizons took too long to finish, ie they needed to ramp up the frequency of premium DLCs
Fact: They planned to release smaller Premium DLCs during end of Horizons/during Beyond Season
Everything got put on ice to do the "New Era" rethink/reconfiguration
After 5 years merging things into base things makes sense from a business point of view and it is viewed as very old content by the consumer
Surely Fact: There is no way their business model anticipates waiting another 4-5 years for the next DLC?!
Conclusion: I cant see how folding Odyssey for the next DLC is plausible IF they have a release schedule that brings them back to the original release cycle of premium content (also see their other titles which all feature regular premium content updates).

The only thing that seems to square the circle is offering discounts on next DLC(s) to owners of existing DLC(s)

Well, whatever they plan is, I'm not going to buy Ody - cause I'm totally uninterested in FPS. I've bought E: D as a game about spaceships - I can walk IRL, I don't need games for that. Not being able to share instances with Ody in space makes neither sense, nor encourages me to buy Ody. Frankly - 4.0 without sharing instances with Ody seems the most pointless and preposterous thing I can imagine about this game. BUT (that curious word is ussually followed by truth) there are many games to play, and I see no problem with replacing E: D with something else.

I think the reality of the situation is they put an incredible amount of time and money into a DLC (Odyssey) which completely bombed. I think it will be a very long time before they would attempt something like that again, if ever for Elite.
Hopefully im wrong, but this is kinda what i think. So for now im just enjoying what we have and not getting my hopes up for 'the next expansion' :)

The doesnt sound like a business plan, since when did a product launch failure ever stop a company releasing a new product unless of course they go bankrupt, which even Odyssey made a profit.

Would have been a nice touch if those over 7500 brave Commanders who were waiting in system for the weapon to fire, received an Aftermath decal or some other small momento. Oh well, maybe next time..

Well that is my curiosity, it seems pretty obvious to stick with access to different types of planets as gated content, I am sure ship owners would love to fly through weather systems of dense atmospheres and gas giants. So how do you fund that? Gated content for planets type seems very solid and can handle players owning a mix and match variety of multiple DLCs, would buying say a Waterworld DLC automatically give you onfoot gameplay or would you need to own Odyssey DLC in addition? Does Odyssey become the gateway DLC to all onfoot gameplay on all other future DLCs? And ship purists just grab the planet access DLC? Could be a way forward, but where does that leave Ship Interiors ;)

Hey Bruce and @sallymorganmoore . Just some feedback from myself on the Horizons and Odyssey instancing. I think most of the playerbase have been expecting 4.0 to allow this to some extent and re-unite the playerbase after the original split with Odyssey. So this is kinda dissapointing news. If there are some major techincal reasons why this isnt possible fair enough. But if there is a chance that it can be done and there is still scope to re-evaluate I would really suggest looking into this. Brining Horizons and Odyssey players back together, even to some extent really would be a very awesome thing and im sure the community would be extremely happy to have this!

:)
Hey dj_wylie,
I suspect @DrinkyBird answered it with PEGI Ratings in #37, as I remember something about this long ago.
It is not a case of could they or couldn't they code it, they cannot legally due to the difference in PEGI ratings between EDH and EDO.

Frankly - I don't believe we will ever see dense atmosphere flight in E: D. And I frankly don't find deep ship interiors interesting. Maybe it is nice to have an option to visit a toilet on your ship - but how often are you really goint to use that in game?

So if that's the case, why not give EVERYONE on Horizons the same 4.0 code base ,console And p. c. ?

Honestly I'm not working this hard with the guys right now to be sleeping on comments where people think we don't want what's best for the game or them, or even think we don't know that they aren't entirely happy with certain things - we know. We want to fix it. We're trying very, very hard to fix it. It won't happen overnight.
We can only do things within the realms of actual development possibilities but we will find ways, we are constantly looking at ways and that's all I've got right now.
Not an offence, but the possibilities are really thin at the moment.

FPS is entirely optional on Odyssey.

So - can I buy Ody without it for a reduced price? Cause I'm not going to pay for something that I don't care about.

I obviously am. I'm not even going to pretend otherwise. It is not well optimised. The problem of consoles performance stays. Same as with CP2020.
Depending on the console xb1/PS4 yea, series x and PS5 should be fine
