Discovery Scanner [Weekly Update] - 25/04/2022

I don't think we'll hear anything until at least the warhammer game is out.

I'd love to be surprised but not hopeful.
There may be a speck of news. He did mention the issue with starports being fixed on Thursday. Could be a patch on maintenance day? Yeah, wouldn’t plan for anything big. I did notice that every game in the weekly streaming schedule seemed to have a bit of a teaser except for ED, unless you count community and in-game news as a teaser. I’m sure they’ll have news at sometime, just not now.

It’s kind of what happens when you say “we have exciting news we want to share” and “we want to move the story along, so we’re cancelling consoles” then go silent for months.

The story is moving along - check the Galnet.

IF the news are related to the story arc and ingame content - they obviously cannot share such news in advance, right?
They may hint that there will be news, but cant give spoilers.

Else, except maybe some more Odyssey optimizations, what news people expect?
And no, we're not talking about whatever wet dreams people might have like thargoid on foot combat - that was not even hinted as being in the development- or like the Panther Clipper

The only hanging thing is the Console transfers - which i guess might be stuck in either legal or technical issues (or both) - so no news for the moment
Which might be understandably annoying for people that really want to transfer from console to PC to be able to enjoy Odyssey.

Anything else?

As a reminder we had no content in 2019 (except ingame stuff like the Interstellar Initiatives - which were nice and provided us with an expanded presence in the galaxy)
In 2020 we had Fleet Carriers and the start of the new story arc (that continued to run in 2021 and now in 2022) which seen the bubble extended to Coalsack Nebula by the end of 2020.
In 2021 we had EDO (with a lot of performance crunching but also some ingame content like a new SRV, new mission types and the Colonia Bridge)

So for 2022 i dont expect much besides what we already got (FC interiors) and whatever the story will lead to.
They definitely gone over-budget last year - so this one Elite will be running on a really tight budget

Sorry to burst your bubble, that will just be a the usual thargoid thursday.

The game is really only in maintenance mode if If we stopped getting galnet news, CGs and thargoid excusions (because there's a little dev work required for all of them), but I'm just hoping that fdev don't prove the usual Doom-mungers right!

(and more selfishly it's getting hard to do a weekly show about Elite: Dangerous and the community that surrounds it when there's nothing new to talk about from the devs)

Hey, different tastes and all that. I'd have rolled my eyes quite hard at bunny ears, but these old-timey space suits are extremely my jam and I slapped that BUY button at relativistic speed.
Nothing amiss with differing tastes. We each play our own way, a few on our discord also really like that suit - hopefully one will join in for some play and I get to see it in game properly.

I play a lot with a small group and appreciate the fun in the 'silly suits', it makes for some chuckles.
My favourite is still the Raider pack, so not all of my loadouts are comical!

One of my toons is still in the Halloween pumpkin head suit. Makes all my stealth missions hilariously funny...
Anyway, I resisted the impulse buy on the vintage suit, but i'm really having a hard time holding back

Pretty much just this at the moment, since release my personal preference has just been fixing and optimising what's already there. New content could've waited until the foundation is a bit more stable.

I'm not sure what news they might have, but there was talk at one point about plans for this year, and that went silent too. You do have a good point. They have to recoup some money from the EDO launch debacle, so you're probably right, this year may be a bit quiet on any more substantive development.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the cupboard where the keep the devs

If the developers at Frontier had a history of grinding away at awesome well-received fairly frequent ED content like that other space-game development team does, then people would more likely interpret the communications silence as FDev just concentrating on what they need to.

Instead there are longer periods of little to nothing, followed by irregular bursts of nothing particularly good (subjective though fairly common view), alongside the poor communication, and that’s not even mentioning the state of releases. All of that opens the gates wide and fast for the doomsayers and speculators, to fill the cavernous chasm in communications.

I still enjoy the game overall. It can be frustrating though thinking of the untapped massive potential. I know it’s an unpopular view, but I would happily pay a moderate monthly fee if it meant a significant increase in resources devoted to revitalising and expanding the game.

The biggest "next thing" is whether and when Horizons becomes Odyssey Lite. I would like to know what the updated plan is, as it has some serious implications either way. Otherwise, the only news I care about these days is on Thursdays when the next CG is announced.

When people will start getting overly rude

Arf hinted there is an Update 12 in the make. I would assume that involves at least some development going on.
However, i'm not really expecting any news...

People are somehow making up that if there is no news there is no Elite to play. 🙃
And i really disagree with that. I'm actually playing the game, not the news.
Update 12 is the 1st anniversary update for Odyssey, so it had better be good. The Panther Clipper is the bare minimum. Base ED got Horizons after a year.

I wonder what internal structural problems make communication by Frontier virtually non-existent and only arising when there is a crisis to be dealt with. Why were the developer journals abandoned and the top 10 problems? Nobody even informed the players of the reasons for these decisions.
Because they think the worst of the storm is over, and they want to focus on their products that are supposed to launch within a few months. They never cared about transparency or honesty, they do this little spiel every time there is too much outrage. First time Braben posted about how sorry he was for the poor communication and how much more direct and open they would communicate was before the game launched.

I really like the visual style of it too. Unfortunately, FD's behavior makes me actively not want to support them in any way. Same with these suits. Being so tone-deaf as to stay silent while demanding a tenner for basic cosmetics is just shameful. Its honestly impressive how FD has consistently managed to burn so much goodwill for seemingly no good reason, its almost a form of art. :D

Many would. Not many would belief FD would actually use it to fund ED development though, and given their track record I am extremely loath to give them any kind of money before deliverance. While I prefer EDO over NMS without a doubt, Hello Games managed to become a trustworthy studio again. When they announce something I am confident they will deliver it. When Honest Arf says something it is just words. Maybe its true, maybe its partly true, maybe its a load of nonsense. You just cannot tell anymore. I dont blame him or the team, but something in FD consistently prevents people from being open and honest. I doubt its the cleaner.
