Discussion Thread #4 - What is your favourite biome to create for?

Hayo Zookeepers,

Time for another discussion topic! Last month was really useful for me in particular, and I’m excited to use all of your tips when I get stuck back into Planet Zoo. Plus, I’m sure there are lots of others here who will find them useful too!

Before we get started, as always, remember that this is a place for us to all enjoy chatting as a community. Please do keep in mind that these threads have set topics and refrain from discussions outside of that or they will be removed by the moderators – but don’t fret! We’ll still be keeping an eye on the rest of the forums for your feedback, suggestions, creations, and more!

So, without further ado:

What is your favourite biome to create for, and why?
My favorites are temperate, because there’s great versitility, grasslands because it’s perfect for a safari park, and tropical because I love to make zoos with a lot of plants.

Currently in my franchise we have temperate, desert, and taiga zoos with Tropical on the way. I honestly feel like with tropical I feel obligated to put a lot of plants and sometimes I’m just not in the mood for that. Tundra and grassland seem like my least favorite from what I’ve seen. Especially all the yellow in grassland

Whatever biome the next DLC is focussed on. So you tell me. ;)

In all honesty, temperate, like almost everyone else. Most of the zoos I have visited have been in the temperate regions, so I like to build in those regions. I'd build zoos in New Zealand but unfortunately Frontier thinks our biomes are "tropical" and "grassland" for some reason so I can't do it justice. Hopefully this discussion is a vague, roundabout hint that the front-end globe is being corrected. 😂

Like I suggested, it would be a good thing if you could use the Taiga map background with the Temperate map. That would at least somewhat resemble NZ better. Though honestly, I'd love if they took my idea and in addition added some special background for places like NZ, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean. Places that don't look anything like any of the current backgrounds, so it's really hard to build zoos for them.

I am currently playing Taiga in Sandbox and keeping the temperature at 22 degrees to simulate a more mild climate like a Temperate Rainforest or Northern California (or NZ like many others have said)

I would love it if Temperate had more regional variety. Keep the temperate biome the same for plants and animals, but then create maps/terrain tools that are based on different subtypes of temperate (temperate rainforest, mediterranean, hot humid). I don't like that the temperate map looks like a rural countryside. Temperate latitudes have the more variation in climate because they are between the equator and the poles and affected by geographical location (i.e. being on the east or west side of the continent).

I'd just be happy if NZ had the temperate biome on the globe. A different background would be nice, sure, but just getting the biome as accurate as possible woud be better than it being identical to Southeast Asia or Central Africa. Even at its most "tropical" NZ is still temperate.

Hi, new here! I really like the Taiga biome, no particular location. I think mountains and snowy areas with thick trees are very beautiful.
Something I'd like to see maybe in the future is a grass brush that is available from outside the environments of the map, though! I love the taiga scenery, but I love temperate/savannah animals, so it's a bit conflicting to place the rocks in the exhibit without matching rocks/grass of that particular biome.

For easiest grassland Savannah africa because it accommodates the most animals. Dont lie Frontier we all know the majority of animals in PZ are from Africa.

For challenge in franchise anything that doesn't aid african Savannah animals I am talking snow because in franchise it's important to set up that big multispieces enclosure asap.

But preference right now is areas that cause snow and rain because if i build habitats that accommodate for before these aspects they can do everything.

Tropical (I live in Semi Tropics, so it's a given) - and grassland (would love a Coastal Sea map too - used to live next to Temperate Coastal with Grasslands) play mostly sandbox with these - I'm tall and feel the cold, so the warmer the better. I'm cold just thinking about the cold. :coffee: That's better.

My main zoo is set in Tasmania (where I used to live) which is difficult because Temperate fits best but isn’t available for Oceania (and because there are no habitat animals found in Tasmania in-game). I would use grassland but the temperatures are too high and the textures are too dry….. if we could mix and match textures and define our own temperature variables that’d solve a lot of issues ;)

Funnily enough, my fav seems to be the desert biome. I don't know why and I didn't expect it but there you are. My least fav is the tropical. Again, no idea why as, like most, I like the terrain paints of the tropical.

I love using temperate maps as a base so that I can build habitats and theming for any biome and have it look cohesive, like a real life zoo. I just wish I could choose climate settings so that I could have the weather turned on but no snow (only because it negatively affects many animals). In my part of the world (Sydney, Australia) we have coastal temperate conditions with no snowfall, so I’d love to be able to have that climate in game.

My favourite biome to build habitats for would be tropical, because I love lush vegetation and immersive scenery. Honestly, all of the biomes are beautiful because we can extend our habitats into guest scenery and make wonderfully immersive and detailed environments.

Temperate! I like to imagine my zoo is just outside of a bustling city somewhere. However, like a lot of people here, I wish we had different backgrounds. It would be nice to have two or three options per biome. I would love a cityscape background for a temperate zoo so I don't have to build or download buildings myself. It's just time consuming and ups the piece count. Same with tropical, taiga, and grassland, which I also use a lot. A cityscape background (maybe in different architectural styles depending on the biome?) would help a lot with immersion. A zoo in the middle of a jungle or the mountains frankly makes no sense

My best ever zoo was built in a taiga biome which was an environment I was avoiding. The challenge of building tropical and desert habitats in a cold climate challenged me and made me a better player.

One additional thought about "biomes." It would be really great to have a generic "city" zoo option where instead of rolling hills and fields, the surroundings are a city complete with sidewalks leading up to the zoo. You could allow players to swap out specific types of terrain swatches/paints from various biomes. (But you could set one just for the temperature.)

Wouldn't need to be super detailed or anything but a pre-built parking lot at the edge of the map, and maybe even the start of a fence would be a really nice option.

Tropical (because I'm born and raised in Myanmar) and Temperate(because of the ease to take care of various animals).

But still, just as some people have been suggesting, we could do some different backgrounds to choose even in different biomes, just as the different areas you find in the scenario maps.

In franchise I tend to go for tropical simply because most animals in game thrive best in warmer climates. This means I don't have to mess around with heaters as much. I also like the tectures of especially the soil very much on this map.

In sandbox though I prefer taiga and temperate. Temperate for its simplicity. You can go pretty much anywhere with this map. Taiga ends up my default when I want to make a zoo located in the US. I don't know, I just like the atmosphere it provides. I would be awesome if we could use the heavy soil from tropical climates though :)
