Distant Worlds 3 - "The Shoulder of Orion" Colonization Event

Wish it was possible to set up a base in the middle of open space to bridge some of the bigger gaps.
yeah would be quite something, wouldn't it.
I can think of a few places :D
But...we're in a beta! Who knows what becomes reality after the process has been fleshed out a bit more.

Maybe at some point, FDev decides that the galaxy is ready for a colonisation system that isn't tied to the bubble anymore.
Take for example, the people from the Azura Initiative...a FC-based mini-bubble near the Great Annihilator.
Give them a colonisation-beacon that's maybe - I dunno - 10x or 100x as expensive, but has a special perk that allows local off-bubble expansion, incl. BGS (and excl.PP)
And instead of become available straight away, have it take a week to do so.

Day 1 of the "Shoulder of Orion" saw some 312ish Commanders pack their stuff, haul goods over some 250 light years and colonize 20 systems as I write this. Fastest outpost was #9 which was built in under a minute. We also have Foxes now and many friendship drives were engaged during the event.

Let's do this again - See you in the Black!

I very much got DW1 & DW2 vibes throughout yesterdays events; people working together, camaraderie, problem solving, mature and respectful interaction. We even got our first emergent group forming from Foxtrot Crew - the Foxes!

And the best part is we get to do it all again next weekend.

If you haven't already signed up, please do. This is a month long event, so there's plenty of time to come and get involved!

I would like to say that I can understand this (and in a general sense I can) … but that totally baffles me. Because the empty inky outer arms were (and are) where I feel drawn the most to … once I had been there. And before I had been there the challenges they posed seemed most intriguing. I couldn't wait to get my 1st (trusty) ASP Explorer and get out to Beagle Point and I had as one goal to cross The Abyss instead of going around (and that was before the Guardian FSD Booster was available).
Anyway … I really like to how many different spaceship-ing activities ED can cater.
Yeah same, whenever I reach the norther half of the galaxy, I truly feel being "out there".

Honoured to witness the events that transpired yesterday and play a small part in the monumental progress that was made.

o7 - see you next time !

The original post has been updated with a bit of story: Distant Grudges.
Enjoy!

“These days I’m merely a bystander with a bit of pragmatic field experience, my friend,” he said matter-of-factly. A brief smile, barely more than an itching in the corner of his mouth.

“As if,” the old man with the tinted glasses chuckled.

I got footage of FoxTrot crew helping complete Outpost #9 in under a minute!

How realistic would it be for a long time ex-player to re-download Elite, join and contribute to this expedition? Would I need to grind up to a certain level first?
No idea if I even have my game saves from what must be...5 or 6 years since I last played..... actually it was when Mac support stopped so whenever that was....

All you need is a ship that can carry a decent amount of cargo. Even 100 Tonnes will help. You can catch a ride on the carriers coming out to the colony locations, deliver cargo to the colony ship, and head back to the bubble on a carrier when they need refilling. Its a very cool and friendly event.

Hey I’m thinking of getting involved, but I’ve not done any of the Trailblazers stuff… what’s the TL;DR for what I would need to get started?

Like Rock-Hermit said above, all you need is a decent hauling ship (preferably with a SCO FSD, for convenience), and a Discord account.
Follow the links in the original post.

o7 peace
