[DISTANT WORLDS] SRV exploding workaround

Read it again carefully.

I said it took 3 days and 15 minutes. 3 days of uninterrupted exploring/driving, which can't really be classified as "waiting". And 15 minutes of combined travel time back to the bubble and time waiting for Support to send me back to the Fleet. Hence the actual trip to the bubble took 15 minutes.

The whole process was about as disruptive to my exploration as Alt-Tabbing and posting to the forum 3 times between jumps.

I got that in my first reading, but in my case it didn't work that way. It took them well over 2 days to send me back after I was already sent to the bubble. Here's a short breakdown of how it worked:

1) SRV exploded, contacted support.
2) A bit over 2 days later, they reply, and ask which port to send me to. I immediately replied with a port name.
3) A bit over 2 days after that, I was sent back to the port specified and asked to let them know when I'm done. I restocked and immediately replied that I'm done, maybe 20 minutes after they sent me back to the bubble.
4) A bit over 2 days after this bit, I was sent back to my original location.

Each phase took between 2-3 days, and yes, I played normally during 1-3, but my bubble time was still a bit over 2 days. If it took less for you, that's great, but my point is it can still take well over 15 minutes of bubble time, and it indeed has in my case. For this reason I'm not inclined to risk faffing about surfaces because I can't be bothered to go through all that again, and I honestly have no practical reasons to go planet side. Hopefully this gets fixed in the next patch, there'll be plent of times to drive around in the buggy :)

Well that sucks. :( Did you let them know you were with DW and were in danger of falling behind the Fleet? I think the reason my issue was resolved more quickly was because my Support Rep was made aware and was sympathetic to time constraints of the DW mission. So this awesome Rep kept ownership of the ticket throughout the whole process and was very responsive. I also had to respect the 8 hour time difference and replied within 15 minutes of each support update in order to make sure they got my response during work hours.

Also I just told them to send me back to a random space port, which ever was quickest for them. The only goal being to get a replace SRV and get back as quickly as possible. So I logged in, bought the SRV, and quickly logged out to respond, never leaving the dock. A couple minutes later, I got a response saying I was back in the Lagoon.

Huh, either you got lucky or I didn't. Or both :) Anyway, just checked and I did indeed mention I was on DW when I contacted them with the issue. Still I'm not salty about it tbh, I'm sure they're quite busy and their response time was a bit below the stated one. I just took the time to play a bit of Witcher 3, which I hadn't really touched since buying it because of Elite :) Not really in danger of falling behind either so it's all good. Back on the road in any case, I'm just being careful about deploying buggies until they replace the SRV's spontaneous combustion engine with the internal combustion one :D

We both had our issues resolved around the same time. So you must have logged your ticket a couple days before mine.

They were probably working on their policy and procedures for addressing the SRV bug for DW explorers. And you were stuck in the limbo phase. I'd bet that if someone logged a ticket right now, their experience would be closer to mine, maybe even faster.

Been away, back now(for 2 weeks). Glad you boys have been playing nicely :D

p.s. re : Update. It totally sucks that FD didn't have a single bug fix for us :(

I'm back at Nyeajeau NY-Z d13-10 . The process took 1 day once FDev got in touch with me. They moved me on 1/27 to Sol, I bought SRVs and emailed them back saying I was ready. They moved be back on 1/28. Thanks FDev!

I've just experienced this bug for the 1st time. Total distance driven 2.06MM.
SRV Hull went from 99% to 6% while driving on a flat section of terrain and suddenly "Hull critical" message.

Yup, that's how it happens. As long as you keep the SRV at 97% or better you can't lose a buggy to the bug. Kinda sucks but repair mats are so common that I haven't actually minded all that much, now that I know how to avoid falling victim to it again.

Some people claim that they went from 100% hull immediately to the "SRV has been destroyed" screen. And some people have been reduced to 3%. But yes, most people seem to survive if they are above 98% hull.

Some thoughts about the circumstances where I encountered the bug:
Planet G was 2.4 - a bit higher than most, but certainly not the 1st time I've driven on that G. Speed was moderate, about half throttle.
I had the PD set to max pips on Sys and 1 pip on ENG and WEP where I would normally just use the balanced setting. <-- This is the only thing I was doing differently really, so don't know if it's relevant.

G doesn't matter, my 2 "accidents" were on 0.10 G and 1.2 G , SYS pips are wasted on SRV as shields only work when hit by weapons, they do not protect against bad driving. Stick 4 on ENG(fastest acceleration) and 2 on weps, or 1 SYS 1 WEP

The 4 pips on SYS was just an experiment since I've often seen a flash of the outer shield ring when taking a hit in the SRV and was wondering if the shield does actually mitigate damage to an extent. Clearly not.
I use 4 pips on ENG when on low gravity worlds to fly over rough terrain. It's fun to do although you do tend to rack up the damage quickly.

Well i keep an eye on my SRV strength & as soon as it drops to 98% I recall my ship & leave. Iv not experienced this bug (yet!), however for me personally it wouldn't be any big deal. Iv got all my jumponium mats to get to Beagle Point 3 times over, so if my lone SRV goes 'pop' then I'll do the rest of DW without the planetary treks.

I did however, a few days ago for no reason, managed to hit my J key twice & did an Emergency Stop! This took 6% off my hull & 10% off my Power Plant, the rest of the modules were repaired.
This means that Im now on Plan B. I was going to continue onwards after reaching Beagle Point, but Im now likely to return home once BP is reached.

I have updated what i think the problems is and why, on the bug post. May be of interest.

I have my doubts about this, mainly because the last time I took massive "unexplainable" damage:

1. My SRV hull was at 98% from taking a reckless tumble.
2. I was on flat ground and did not strike anything visible, but my SRV reacted as if struck by something at great force-- rebounding and tumbling through the air. I've struck large boulders going faster and not rebounded like that (or taken nearly as much damage). I think we're dealing with a collision defect rather than a cosmetic defect like the one you describe in your link.
