Community Event / Creation DIY Controller and Throttle

I took the time for some HQ photos. Silly me I forgot to dust them off first.

I've done quite a few missions past few days. It plays great but i need to fix a few bugs quickly. Sometimes it just crashes, and one mouse axis is dodgy. Nothing too serious... Hey i'm playing on my own hardware. I built it, surely i can fix it!

Playing on your own hardware is kinda cool, and the HD pics look good :D How's the bug coming on?

I've made some progress...and the household has started calling me 'The Bombmaker' o_O

The guts of the TH X stick are now in their own (too small) box. I've taken one of the buttons and turned it into a 'Push to Break' button that's now used for Silent Running. I've left the stick's main housing as it is...it's ugly but I wanted a 'proof of concept' before I went any further; it's worked.

So, I've got my first 'custom job', with a 2nd PoV button and a few more buttons...oh, and I've spent the day playing with my Dremel :D What a toy!

Next will be the PS4 thumb-stick.., but that will be tomorrow night Pinky; now, I have to tidy up :(

I managed to slash the axis bug by replacing the entire mini-joystick (taken from an old XBox360 controller). A few days back I put on some superglue but that turned out to be a mistake. I actually wrecked the Y-axis on the bloody thing. Good riddens I had a spare. These things are mighty cheap though, I order another 10 on EBay for only $6 in case I mess up again.

The other bug i don't know. I've removed all the surplus logic in the firmware but sometimes it just decides to stop working. A quick unplug-replug solves the issue but it is very irritating when that happens during an interdiction or anything like that. Maybe i'm just overflowing the USB HID buffer with 50 updates/second when the going gets tough.

Thank you also for telling me about your achievements, i'd love to see a few picture.

...A few days back I put on some superglue...

Strange stuff 'superglue'...I'm forbidden from using it :(

Will get some pics up for you tomorrow , RL etc etc. Realised that my soldering iron really wasn't any good...so now the proud owner of a new Soldering Station so ought to be able to include a proof of ability with the PS4 thumber...from there, I'm really in the mood to make a snazzy custom switch box, with extra L.E.Ds, some serious envy this side Re: those L.E.Ds mate...serious envy!

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for grips!
Thank you kindly. I don't think the grips themselves with change a lot. I've been playing quite a few games with these leather grips and they are very comfortable already, even if you look a little basic compared to the overly shaped ergonomic throttles you get from commercial joysticks. Perhaps it is because the fighter sticks are meant to be used in harsh environments with gloves and 5G pulling at you, and not for people leaning back in a comfy chair, haha.

I'll be focusing more on getting the base mount points sorted. These sticks were not designed to be sitting on top of a desk. The sticks are too long for that and already I notice a little sore muscles in my upper body because I have to lift my arms too much when playing. These sticks were designed to be side-mounted to a low and reclined chair like you see in some of those sim pits or playseats.

All I can say is it will be awesome. I can't tell you more, simply because I don't know yet.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention that I received all the parts I need to replace the fragile potentiometers with DIY hall effect sensors. I'll be working on those later maybe next week. It is of low priority now because the potentiometers work good enough for now.

Quite right. (I should learn to FULLY read the thread before I post next time!) Leather is definitely a good choice as, over time your natural hand position, will imprint making the sticks very much, "yours".

The LEDs look incredible so the idea of seeing a whole chair developing from this is exciting. (Don't forget that handy cup holder will you! Though the way this is going, I can see a full on replicator in the end .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2IJdfxWtPM)

Best of luck with the Hall Sensors.

I'm guess the chair will take up all of the remaining time. Perhaps it would be more wise to spend a little money into a decent GFX card maybe?

That replicator can only make tea. I've got a kettle for that, lol. :D :D

PS: As I'm not American the cup holder isn't really a priority.

GFX sounds like a good move. I play on underspec laptop, so every time I get into a fight, the controls spend 50% of the time locked up! Smooth framerates are a dream at this end.

Not American either but cup holders always sound a good idea, spillage versus hardware seeming to be, quite a bad mix. Definitely watching this thread with great interest, I have an aquaponic set up with Arduino and made a wee companion (ripped off Duncan Jones' Moon) . The eventual hope of many is for an ED API, to run secondary hardware with readouts, captain's log and such. Great job Commander.

Arduino exercise :

Geraint has 8 moods .. chosen at random and held for randomised time, defaulting to "happy"

Ignore the bluetack please.

Custom PS4 button added:

That was a pain, need to alter the file and fix the cheapo thumber; I'd suggest spending the extra £1 or 2 on a decent thumber. This will also be bluetacked for the moment until I figure out what/how I'm going to use it. Hoping it will help me tame 'Yaw'.

Phase 2:

Unsure, at the moment I'm still going with a Custom Switch panel with twice as many LEDs at Cat.....TWICE!!!

Hi

I have something similar and I am very very happy, a advise tilted back slightly, it is more comfortable.

Looks like a nice seat. Regarding the recline, it's probably worthwhile fiddle with the recline until you're happy. The one in my racing sim rig is a lot less than 20 degrees from what I can tell and I find it to be very comfortable.

Edit: Picture - notice the bolts on the sides. Recline is basically the line between the middle of the bolts:

The seat i posted turned out to be sold out. I really do not like those shops that advertise stuff they do not have (any more). I will have to look further but i may have to increase my budget a little

So I found another chair for an acceptable sum. I think it will look awesome.

No idea when it'll arrive, should be 2-3 working days.

UPDATE: The seat is in and it looks absolutely freaking awesome and high tech.

Woah that's a serious looking pew Cat! Keen to see it mounted :)
Did you get all the bugs worked out of your controller setup?
