DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

Quick EDTracker-Mac update:

I've not had much time to work on it this week, but I've a rudimentary magnetic calibration estimation process in place and am able to take a pre-flashed but factory reset edtracker to working, but only in the default orientation (top, usb left) so far.

When I get a chance to implement setting the orientation and can work out some reliability issues in aquiring the extant magcal data I shan't be far off a bare bones program.

I note Cataclysm has turned to the dark side however (;)), so I could catering to a potential audience of only myself. :D

Cheers,

BW.

Great news on your progress. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

For what it's worth you can count me in on your potential audience. So that's two of is :D

I'm still grieving I must tell you. Just this morning i tried moving a file to another folder using copy/paste, and I actually had to manually delete the old one... :( Also, you can't send audio to multiple devices on Windows7 without a hack! [/comedy].

My wife said I can order a Pro unit for my Birthday at the end of the month. But not Before :(

So, with that in mind I was wondering what the lead time is to order a Pro and get one sent to Switzerland?

Plenty of stock don't worry ;)

Technically the Royal Mail contract the delivery abroad to 30 days (ie. they won't consider it lost until 30 days have passed without it turning up) but in reality mainland Europe is a few days delivery on average. Depends partially on your local postal service, of course, and customs. Put it like this, it's very rare that european shipping takes much longer than 7 working days, but we can't guarantee it. Well, we can with a courier, but it gets very expensive then!

Hi

I bought the kit yesterday and I am really pleased with it. (Only took all day to assemble because I am a numpty!)

I game in 3D and have made a fix for nVidia 3D Vision ED users which corrects the depth of the starfield and nebula which were too near or 2D respectively. It also removes some effects which were borked in 3D and couldn't fix; this unfortunately makes station interias a little dark. I just rollplay them to be seedier like Terok Nor as apposed to Deep Space Nine!

However, bar some situational and (I think) minor anomalies, space travel, combat and everything else is awesome! Combat using the EDTracker / 3D Vision combo through planetary rings... wow! Love the OR; it is mega! But the combination of 3D Vision and the EDTracker is suprisingly close to the VR experience and in some ways superior because it isn't so enclosing, which I recon is both a pro and con!

I wasn't convinced about headtracking on fixed screen because I expected too looking to the extremes using head movement would cause you loose the screen but it is suprisingly natural! You move your head AND your eyes instead of just your head and it works! The only con with the EDTracker is that every now and again you have to reach forward to the keyboard to hit the recenter key! And that's about it!

If you own an nVidia 3D Vision kit, or know people that do, I would be grateful if you/they would try out my fix and tell me what you think. I would like some feedback. I have only travelled through newby zones so I imagine there are starfields and/or nebula shaders I havent caught/ fixed yet but it only takes a second to fix and upload once found and I have just kitted out an Asp Explorer to get to Sag A* :).

The fix can be found on the Helixmod site where all the 3D Vision community fixes are stored.

All the best and hopefully you will be enjoying ED in HD 3D! :)

Confirmed, I received mine here in Germany the day after it was sent!

Well I just ordered it, so now I have to wait and wait and wait ;)

As I was reading the instructions, it says that the GUI has to be running to use the recentre hotkey. Is this really needed or can you get away without running it? I plan on using it with OpenTrack if that makes a difference.

Correct, but his Mac GUI is (currently) only targetting the DIY models, I believe.

Ah Right. Im on PC. Looking forward to getting this and trying it out. I used to use FacetrackNoIR but with glasses it sucked. And Track IR here in Switzerland is nearly 300 CHF or 280 Euros.

I recommend running the UI minimize - it used virtually zero CPU and gives you the option to recenter the view quickly, e.g. when you start a gaming session.

Received the EDTracker Pro today. Took a little longer since We are not part of the EU :)

Setup went well, and I am quite impressed, although I ran into something I didn't even think of.

I made the assumption that the Smoothing setting would cut down on the Jiggles as I call it. And it does, but since I was dumb enough to put the smoothness at 99, I induced another effect. Nausea.

My Settings are Exponential, Pitch and Yaw at 15.0. It seems that the lag that was induced by having the smoothness so high was enough to cause me to become Queasy.

It took a while to work out why, but I have since set the smoothing to 30 and the feeling is gone. I imagine that this is the same think people felt in the Rift when lag was an issue.

Now that it is all sorted, I love it. Thanks to Everyone at ED TRacker. 5 Stars, would recommend. :p

Oh and this is a Game Changer for me. I may have to order backups in case this ever goes down.

Hey,

I got my kit (9250 + pcb form edtracker site) today and had no problems getting it together really, my problem is that the YAW axis(not a drift problem) is :):):):):):):) all over the place, and when i turn my head to the right or left it goes there fro 0.5 sec then goes back to the middle. Have tried allmost anyhting i can think of but cant get it to work. The funny thing is tho that the Pitch axis works perfectly, no problem at all. It is just the Yaw that is all over.

Any help wout be great, and i can post some screenshots if you want.

Hi Hoff.

I was messing around with the magnetic calibration last weekend trying to get a workable Mac prototype up and running and this is exactly the symptom you see with a wrongly calibrated magnetometer.

My suggestion would be to set the configuration to USB TOP&LEFT then perform the calibration again with just the naked EDTracker (not strapped to your headphones or whathaveyou), keeping it far away from your phone, the keyboard, monitor anything that might generate a magnetic field.

If you can eliminate the recentreing problem under test conditions it's then just a case of reperforming the calibration under live conditions with enough data points that you get a good estimate of the full magnetic ellipsoid. Turn the sensitivity slider up a bit so you've plenty of points for it to solve with.

When I say live conditions, I mean strapped to whatever you're going to strap it to and keep it at around the area you'll be using it. Don't put the headphone/tracker combination down on the desk before you've finished or after you've started, for example.

Good luck,

BW.
