DIY Head Tracker For A Tenner

Mine arrived today as well, and is working a treat.

I need to cut a bit off pcb though so it fits inside one of the maplin boxes shown in Omegahunter's guide on the EdTracker website.

Does anyone have an idea on the best tool to use for doing that?

Fine hacksaw blade, or something else?

Dremel or some sort of bench grinder or other grinding wheel would be the ideal, but I appreciate not everyone has one...!

The first few that I modded were already built and I just used cutters to cut to the corner hole then finishing off with a round file to make it large enough to fit.

Found that the boards are workable with a craft knife but only to finish off the edges WOULDN'T TELL ANYONE TO WORK ON A SMALL AREA LIKE THAT WITH A CRAFT KNIFE YOU WILL CUT YOURSELF AND DON'T TRY TO CUT THE SQUARE OUT USING ONLY A CRAFT KNIFE.

The last set that the guide was based on, I cut the PCB before building the units using a junior hacksaw.
If your going to work on a ready built unit would say try and work backwards.
IE keep the hacksaw with its teeth up and the board above it so that the dust (which will have some copper on it) fall aways from the circuits.

Fine hacksaw should do it, make sure it's grabbed in a vice or something similar.

As he said if you can use something to hold the board and keep your fingers away from the the area you're working on if possible.

connecting to usb lead

Hi all,
If this is attached to a usb headset, can you piggyback off the headset cable rather than use 2 sockets?

Uh-oh. I disconnected my Tracker last night and when I plugged it in this morning and tried ED it needed re-calibrating (The alignment was out and it was drifting off- very quickly making you dizzy). Does the device need to remain plugged in to save it's calibration? I don't want to have to recalibrate (unless it's made a lot quicker and easier than as-is) every time I go to play.

My PC is powered down after use, so that's no different to unplugging. I don't need to recalibrate etc.

Then why the drift and the need to invert one of the axis when I played ED this morning? The tracker remains lit-up when my PC powers down. Meaning it always receives power. I unplugged mine, but the device has EPRoM doesn't it? Unplug yours and see what happens.

Calibration is stored but is based on temperature. If the room temperature changes a lot then the edtracker will be running at a different temperature and may need recalibrating.
I put mine in a box a couple of days ago and had to recalibrate as the headtracker was running hotter.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense, but the temp hasn't changed that much in my situation. Maybe a variation of one or two degrees. If the device is that sensitive, then everybody would need to re-calibrate before using. Or, the device would need to be in its own box/enclosure with temperature management software and a fan.

What's strange about my tracker is that the alignment is not being saved. Meaning I have to rotate my headset and invert an axis when I start the game. I'm going to try ED again having just recalibrated...

It's a bug ;-) we are aware....

Hey there guys,

does anyone have experiences with the re-centre utility?

For me it doesn't work,
if I activate it after I plugged in the EDTracker, it won't find the tracker.
If I do it the other way round the EDtracker doesn't get recognised. It seems that it blocks the COM-Ports or something?

I'd appreciate some help!

Do you have the GUI open at the same time? If so, close the GUI first. It does indeed connect/need the COM port, but only one thing can connect to the COM port at any time - so you need to close the EDTracker GUI (you shouldn't need this past flashing/config anyway)....

Cheers,
Dan

Great, I wasn't aware of that.
Works like a charm, thanks!

One more thing:
Do you (or someone else) know how to bind a joystick button to the Reset-App (I'm using the TM Hotas X)?
It only shows me everything else.

You need to use whatever profile editor software comes with your joystick. You set a key in the centering tool. Then in your joystick profile software you create a profile for ED or a general one if you use the same setup everywhere. It's in the profiler that you will tell the joystick to replace a button action with a keypress instead. Set it to the same key as in the centering tool.

PS, I asked Rob if he could add a function that toggles head tracking on/off. He said he would add it somewhere down the road and tools like the joystick centering tool would be able to use it.

It's handy in some games to be able to pause tracking with the view centered for high precision sniping and careful maneuvering.

Is there anyone who has put an Edtracker in a nice maplins or other enclosure willing to do it for me? I am very very bad at fiddly things and I lack the tools. I will cover all postage costs/materials/Beer Money in advance.
I can't just mount it to my headphones as the spikes are marking the headband.
Can't do tic tac box as mine seems too thick to fit in properly.

use a file and take your time

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Did it earlier on, without any resulting injuries :), with a fine hacksaw + file & it's working a treat.

I might need to superglue the enclosure to my headset though ( I use a single earpiece headset+mic as I use VoiceAttack ), as it's just currently held in place with a few cable ties.

This means it wobbles a little bit when I move my head, which throws the tracking centre off slightly.

If nobody else closer to you offers Noxia, I can do it for you.
