DLC 19 Speculation

Something like this for planet zoo would be amazing 🤩

This is really nice to see. And will hopefully address some of the bigger concerns for that community. Also not featured in that roadmap, but something they mention in the Steam post is that they're looking to bring back some of the themes from PC1 as part of free updates. Which is really sweet to see. And does make me wonder what they have in store for DLC...

As for PZ, I don't think this would make sense at this point in development. I don't think this would be worth doing for them as we'll be waiting months upon months for any update that will inevitably have much less content than this... So it would look very sparse.

The key takeaways for me here is that:
  1. There's probably a DLC for PC2 coming in April. Two months of free updates is enough of a "washout" from the launch, assuming they get the game steady...

  2. If the fans react to this roadmap in an aggressively positive way and let Frontier know how much they appreciate the transparency/seeing what's up ahead, I do think this is something we might see more of with future games. Like with anything, if a company is made to feel like an action builds trust in a brand that will ultimately lead to sales... They'll replicate it.

Yeah that's fair, but I'd still love a "wait till X month" from frontier to know when to expect stuff. And if PZ2 is ever a thing for its whole development.

I mean, yeah, that would be nice but... Why would they do that? Doing that would mean a chunk of people will fully unplug and stop talking about, maybe even playing the game. Certain people might also wait on buying the game or DLC too. There's no upside to them doing that at this stage.

If the goal is to keep people talking and engaging? A bit of mystery at this point in the game is the way to go. The Planet Zoo community is a big part of why this game has been so successful (and, TBH, probably a bit of the reason why Frontier goes so "light" on PZ in their streams these days; the community sustains itself very nicely).

For a newer game with quarterly (or more) updates, though? It could be really fun to see something like this. Telling us what to expect over the next ~6 months and beyond. Even if they don't tell us everything I can see that prompting some really big chatter.

Yeah you are right, I do enjoy the mystery myself, I'd hate it if a roadmap just spoiled the whole ordeal, but given the state of the game I wouldn't mind it as much I guess.

Frontier publishes a road map for Planet Coaster and the forum posts gets only 1 comment. If they published a road map for Planet Zoo, this forum would burn down and we would reach a thousand pages!
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but actually I think a roadmap is way better for something like PC2 than PZ. In fact, I’m even happy we don’t have one.

PC2 is a new game, while it is a sequel the sky is still the limit with what they can add. Especially as the game isn’t meeting expectations, a roadmap is a fantastic idea. Show bits and pieces of what people might expect, while saving the fun and exiting features for down the line.

The problem with planet zoo is we won’t have anything that exiting anymore. I doubt after a year of only 2 DLCs with most of the efforts being spent on console ports Frontiers would suddenly turn around with a bright and new feature.

I mean at this stage would it be nice if Frontier drops birds on us? Of course. Would it be great if exhibits aren’t abandoned and we get new exhibit sizes, fish, birds, and other new animals? Yeah! Would a return to South America with birds and monkeys, or a coastal pack with a walrus and birds be well received and awesome? Of course! Am I expecting any of this? Not at all.

So to be honest, I’m fine speculating. As AndyZoos said the community mostly keeps itself a loft. I’m not expecting anything much anymore, I’ll also say after Zookeeper pack my expectations are even lower than before.

Don't get me wrong! I'd definitely love a high-level road map. Tell me, broadly, what we're getting and when... I'm all for it. Save some of the tastier bits for an actual reveal and don't tell me a specific date it'll be coming so there's some sort of a surprise and I'm in. Haha.

But for Frontier, at this point, given the way people consume things? Keeping the mystery up will work better. The thing about that PC2 map is that the updates are coming relatively soon and dripping out over the next four months. So there is a lot to say and it's happening relatively soon (maybe even within the next 3-4 weeks). So there's less time.

If they came out and did this for Planet Zoo, they'd announce it... And then when the update actually happened much of the luster will have worn off because people will have known about it for 2-3 months. Better to slam people with it and get it to them quickly. There'll be way more hype for it that way.

But, again, if they did this for PZ earlier in development? Like a, "here are the new features/updates we have planned for the year by quarter" and they kept a few things hidden as a surprise (and maybe give us a singular hint for each related DLC)? That could have gone over really nicely.

I know I’m coming off as super bitter, but not being drip fed that stuff is why I’m happy. If I’m upset with a dlc roster I would rather be upset all at once then knowing months in advance it’s not the dlc for me. Like if we got something like this:

Here are the exiting new animals to look forward to in the next dlc:
  1. February we get a cat
  2. March we get a new antelope
  3. April we get a caprine
Etc…
Like I would rather know the roster all at once than know in advance it will have no NWM/ Birds/ Reptiles/ Exhibit animals
