DLC18 discussion and predictions

Lets talk baboons! Here's some questions for you guys:
  1. What species would you like to see?
  2. What animations and behaviours would you like to see baboons have ingame
  3. What enrichment do you think they should use?
  4. What kind of habitat would you make for baboons and what species do you think they could be mixed with?
Can you tell how bad I want baboons?

1. Ideally Hamadryas, but honestly any will do for me im not picky
2. Probably borrowing alot from the mandrill or macaque, which is fine i dont think there are any specific baboon related animations needed. Maybe some dominace fighting between them.
3. Aside form the usual primate stuff i think the goat mountain would work wonderfully for them, ideally in a way where multiple can use it at the same time, no clue if thats possible tho.
4. Barbary sheep is probably the prime candiate for them, but since we dont have them either id use the ibex as nubian ibex stand ins, no shame in having them as the only species in the enclosure tho.

Oh boy
  1. Gelada or Hamadryas Baboon, either will have me excited. Both are appealing visually and are interesting in their own ways.
  2. Sitting on the ground picking grass, sitting by water using their hands as cups to drink, yelling and fighting with each other and running after each other. I’m not sure which out of the ones I just listed the mandrill already can do.
  3. A balancing log would be cool, we have a small log for the meerkat it would be cool if we got a larger one for them to balance on, but realistically they’ll probably use the same as the mandrill, whatever those are.
  4. If it is a Hamadryas Baboon my local zoo (which I actually just came back from lol) has a really cool baboon enclosure (it’s actually for olive baboons but can work both ways) that looks like a canyon with huge rock walls and a waterfall. I would love to do a more detailed version of that with overhanging foliage and a shallow river down the middle of the enclosure. Safe to say if we do get a baboon it’s the first animal I’m building for. Not sure what animal can go with them, Barbary sheep but we don’t have those, maybe meerkats.

Here is a cropped image I took from the North Carolina Zoo, this should answer your question on what I want.
IMG_6868_Original.jpeg

1. Idc but i guess gelada and hamadryas both are visually appealing.
2. What ever baboons are supposed to do
3. Idk but something that other animal or the other primates could use as well. Any new enrichment is welcomed.
4. Probably something rocky (kopje like structures or rock walls and climbing frames) and grassy (or dry if hamadryas) and mixed with some caprine.

Frontier, @DarthQuell has returned, you can now release the DLC, thanks.

Hamadryas baboon. They should come with a hairdresser saloon. I don't think they could share their habitat since they are bad monkeys (or that's what I've heard many people say in the zoos).

Question 1 - 4 - whichever answer gets me a colobus monkey sooner 😁

Oh nice darthquell is back, to award our fortune, frontier has decided to delay the dlc by another month 🎉
Hey woah, hold up. Did I bring controversy to PlanZo?

  1. Hamadryas. It's grown on me the most
  2. I don't know baboons enough to give anything justifiable
  3. The rock formation. They could climb it and whatnot
  4. Arid, rocky habitat. I personally don't think they'd have any species enrichment

1. Gelada if baboon-like monkeys count. If only a true baboon were possible, I would choose the Guinea baboon. It is becoming more common here in Europe, and I think it is the nicest-looking of the true baboons.
2. Probably doesn't need a great deal of different animations from the mandrill, to be honest.
3. The climbing rock should be an enrichment item for either the gelada or the baboon. Otherwise, similar items to the mandrill.
4. Guinea baboons have been mixed successfully with black rhino, and other true baboons have been mixed with white rhino, giraffe and zebra among other animals. However, I would hesitate to give them an enrichment bonus with any other species.

Guinea baboons forever.

Im bored rn so have my general reactions to most popular animals i can think of rn:

Baboon/new world monkey: happy
Both: very happy

Second new world monkey: hell yeah

Generic asian monkey: neat

Lemure: allright but id rather have a real monkey

Crane: neat

Secretary bird: neat enough, id prefer other birds

Pelican: hell yeah

Pheasent: chefs kiss

Duck: extacy

Rhea: neat

Nene: sweet

Blackbuck/nilgai: nice
Both: india will never need another ungulate ever again

Markhor/barbery sheep: good enough

Small deer/antelope: dope

Any other ungulate: fine to disappointment depending on redundancy (musk ox = fine, javan rhino = small rant on the reveal thread)

Pallas cat: guess we gotta have that cat

Ocelot: cat but your to usefull to not be okay

European wildcat: surprising but welcome

Any other cat: why you

Any canine: why you

Bears: better hope the other isnt around the corner as the anniversary animal

Mara: very pleased

Tortoise: thumbs up

Monitor: sweet

Croc: meh i guess

Rhinoceros iguana: awesome
Companied by freed iguanas: i forgive frontier every stupid decision they ever did

Anything else heavily dependant on what else is in the pack
I bolded the ones that would "make" a pack for me all on their own.
How I think I'd react to likely/popular animal additions:
  • Primates: (we have so few right now, that anything would be nice)
    • New World:
      • Golden Lion Tamarin: Tears of happiness and it will probably go in every zoo going forward even if it doesn't fit the theme.
      • Howler Monkey and/or Spider Monkey: Neat, I've been wanting them. I will use them often. One is great, but both would be amazing.
      • Squirrel Monkey and/or additional tamarins: Hopefully we got the other 2-3 first, but they seem great to fill out my monkey houses and neotropical sections.
    • Old World
      • Hamadryas Baboon: This will be fun to build for in some of my zoos. It's a good ABC pick that will make other people very happy. I would kind of like it, too.
      • Guereza and/or guenon: Nice! These are great realism picks. I will use them in some of my zoos.
      • Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey: Cool monkey, and I'm happy for the Chinese players. I've felt bad that it is so hard for them to participate in the discussions here. I'll need at least 2 New World monkeys and an African one to properly enjoy it for myself.
      • Grey langur and/or Lion Tailed Macaque: Good, now India has a monkey. That region seems fleshed out now.
      • Another lemur or Gelada: I don't hate it, but I would have preferred something else. The gelada might seem better if we got a proper baboon first.
  • Carnivorans:
    • Big Icons:
      • American Black Bear: Jumping for joy! My local rainbow bear is finally here. I've gotten my big local species, and it will have a home in most of my zoos.
      • Spectacled Bear: Neat pick and good for the Andes. It's not my go-to for a large neotropical habitat, but it is my main missing alternate/variety pick. With both species, the bears are finally done. Getting a rep from each of the big cats is more important for realism, but the bears are pretty iconic and important, too.
      • Walrus: I'm happy for the people who wanted it, but I don't personally feel that strongly about it. It is popular enough to be a good pick.
    • Cats and Dogs:
      • Serval: Fantastic! I love these animals and see them in many zoos. I will use them a lot. I understand why some wouldn't be crazy about it, but I like it so much that other people's criticism wouldn't bother me.
      • Ocelot and/or Pallas's Cat: Exciting! These are great picks that I will use often. A lot of people will be pretty happy with them.
      • Jackal, raccoon dog, bush dog, or another fox: I don't need them, and I'm not sure they're good picks. I still like dogs and think we're kind of due one.
      • Other Cats: Fishing cats are neat, bobcats are a cornerstone of local wildlife zoos, and there are some other cool options for smaller cats. I want many things before getting an African leopard, but I think it would do well enough with a general audience. If support goes on longer, there are many good options for cats.
      • Mongoose or Civet: I didn't need this animal, but I appreciate the effort, I guess? I wish all of that work had gone into a monkey or something.
    • Musteloids:
      • Coati: Cool! I'm going to use this a lot, and many people will be happy with it.
      • Honey Badger: It's not a top-priority animal for me, but it's a pretty great pick. I have several uses for it.
      • Sea Otter: They might not be necessary, but they are adorable! I love it.
      • Other musteloids: Varies, but there are some interesting options if support goes on for longer.
  • Ungulates:
    • Important Species:
      • Muntjac: Neat! I can't wait to put them in with red pandas. This is the most interesting ungulate they could have picked. Way to go Frontier!
      • Markhor: I love these goats! They are very cool, and I miss them from the previous games.
      • Musk ox: I don't build Arctic sections often, but it will be great to have for when I do.
      • Blackbuck: Great, now India is done. I don't think I'll use them very often, but they'll be great for a larger South and Southeast Asian zoo or zoo section.
    • Other Asian Ungulates: There are some good options, but I don't think I'd use them much. I can see open niches for a friend for the blackbuck and another thing or two for East Asia. Maybe the Middle East, too?
    • North American Ungulates: Great! I really needed at least one more.
    • South American Ungulates: I'd wish we'd gotten a bird or monkey instead.
    • African Ungulates: I'm exhausted with African ungulates for now. This could change in a year or so.
    • European Ungulates: Seriously? I don't hate them, but there are only 3 left.
  • Other Mammals:
    • Marsupials/Monotremes:
      • Tree Kangaroo: This is one of the cutest animals I've rarely seen! I love it!
      • Echidna: It's in the soundtrack and it's kind of cute. I'm sold.
      • Rock Wallaby: I don't need it, but it's pretty cool. We could definitely use another macropod or two. I kind of see them as Australia's ungulates.
      • Bilby and/or Possum: Interesting, and I'm happy for the Australian players. It doesn't change my game too much, but they would be nice to have.
      • Other Macropods: Kind of boring, but I would be willing to pay for one or two. I can see a niche for it.
    • Rodents:
      • Patagonian Mara: I am not personally excited about this animal, but it's a good realism pick and is important for regional rep. It's a solid choice. Nice!
      • Agouti: I will definitely use this in tropical houses.
      • New World Porcupine: Cool even though it's not as high-priority for me.
    • Other:
      • Tamandua: This one seems super cool and not too high-effort (using the pangolin rig). I love it!
      • Rabbit: I don't need it, but it would be nice to have. The modders want this rig.
  • Habitat Birds: (like the monkeys, it would be hard to be mad at any bird)
    • Waders:
      • Grey Crowned Crane: This is my favorite species for a habitat bird. I can't wait to build for them, and I would use them often
      • Scarlet Ibis/Roseate Spoonbill: Neat! I really like them. The ibis is flashier and would be better for mods, but the spoonbill has a useful range. I need one, but both would be amazing.
      • Other Cranes: Demoiselle and Paradise cranes are awesome. North America could use one, too. I see them often in zoos. They would be nice to have.
      • American Flamingo: It's a great filler/clone pick but a weak star. My reaction would depend on what comes with it.
      • Storks: There are some cool options, but I don't see them as often in zoos. I would like them because they are birds.
      • Shoebill: If we get 1-2 better African birds I would like it, but it seems weaker than many other options and polarizing.
    • Waterfowl/Pelicans:
      • Ducks: The white faced whistling, Mandarin, and mallard are all fantastic options, and the Muscovy and NA wood aren't far behind. I think ducks would be one of the most useful animals they could add, and I'd be looking to add at least one to pretty much every zoo. I really want at least one in the game, and I could use mods for whatever others they don't want to add.
      • Great White Pelican: A pelican would be fun, and they seem to have some good uses. I would prefer the brown if that's the only way to get NA a temperate bird, but the GWP is very cool otherwise and much more popular.
      • Black Swan: It would be nice for Australia and to pair with the Mute swan. People know this one from the ballet, and it is more common in zoos. Good filler pick.
      • Goose: I don't need it, but a goose with accurate sounds would be good for a lot of mods.
    • Peasants:
      • Wild Turkey: It is iconic, has a wide range in NA, and they can double as a farm animal. They would be lovely, and I have a lot of uses for them.
      • Golden Pheasant: They are colorful, popular, and common in zoos. Great!
      • Guineafowl: It has some uses, but it isn't my favorite.
      • Other Pheasants: I will probably use some mods, but there are some cool ones I wouldn't mind in DLCs if support goes on longer.
    • Other:
      • Secretary Bird: Cool model! I missed this one from ZT2. A lot of people will be really happy, as will I. I see a big need for either this one or the GCC, but both would be amazing.
      • Rhea: It would be great for non-tropical South American sections even if it isn't the most exciting. We need it round out the roster.
      • Ground Hornbill: Cool!
      • Rockhopper Penguin: We have enough penguins, but I still kind of want it.
  • Habitat Reptiles:
    • Freshwater Turtle(s): Pig-nosed turtles, painted terrapins, and Arrau turtles would be so cool. They are deeply underrated.
    • Sea Turtle: The realism fans might be mad, but I'd be excited. It definitely has that wow-factor.
    • Spurred Tortoise: I see them a lot. I can finally put them in that habitat I made back when I forgot they weren't in the game yet. I could live without it, but I would be happy to see it in a pack.
    • Perentie: It seems important for Australian sections, and I would have some uses for it, but I could live without it.
    • Nile Crocodile: I kind of use the saltwater crocodile as a sub right now. Africa could use a croc, though. I don't mind it.
  • Flying Birds: Jumping for joy and willing to spend extra to get them. This would be a very welcome surprise.
  • Exhibit Animals: There are a few I'd love, (chameleon, emerald tree boa, thorny devil) and others that the community would love (cobra, frilled lizard, snapping turtle, green anaconda). I also think a python, bearded dragon, gecko, blue poison frog, and some colorful snakes would be nice. In general, exhibit animals aren't my top priority, but there are good options.

Hopefully the next dlc pack, whenever it'll be announced whether or not, will have these:
  • African leopard
  • Any Australian monitor lizard species
  • Any baboon species
  • Masai giraffe
  • Markhor
  • King cobra
  • Green anaconda
  • Larger pythons
  • Green sea turtle
  • Exhibit: any fish, chameleons, toads, geckos and cobras

Question 1 - 4 - whichever answer gets me a colobus monkey sooner 😁
Holy, yes please. Quite frankly, we have 0 birds that can be used for Rainforest African Sections which is holy... We have no small primates for Rainforest sections.
I have always left an open habitat for a primate/bird in my Rainforest Section with Okapis, Mandrills and Gorillas.

Come home Congo Peafowl or Mantled Guereza.

How would people feel about an all-bird finale?
I'd be happy for bird lovers and glad for better representation of birds. Depending on species it could be a favorite pack of mine!
HOWEVER, I'm such a mammal lover a part of me would feel disappointed on the magnitude of the barnyard pack level. So, I'd hope for an anniversary mammal. Probably just a Spider Monkey or something. I know NWM is too cool and popular to give for free but it will be the fifth anniversary AND the game will be over.
While there are mammals I want or think are needed, I would LOVE an all-birds (or, slightly less, an all-monkey) finale.

Ok just to entertain this idea...

You get an all birds pack but is only 7 habitat birds and then some scenery ala barnyard style.

Which birds would you pick?

Mine would be:

1. Greater rhea
2. Secretary bird
3. Grey crowned crane
4. Brown pelican
5. Scarlet ibis
6. Mandarín duck
7. Golden pheasant
