This reminds me of the black rhino dilemma. It was never made a huge deal but still a lot of people were making the argument about the white rhino being enough. I still stand by my opinion that both African species were essential as both face conservation issues and are common in many zoos which is the foundation of planet zoo. Not that the occasional odd ball hasn’t made it in which hasn’t been a negative thing. To me rock hyrax would be great but a waterbuck wouldn’t bother me either. That’s why it reminds me of the rhino situation even though same niche in some ways the animals are unique to one another and not the same.
This is exactly the issue one or the other was not enough for some people. But a majority of the players were not facing this issue they just wanted an african rhino either because of a lack of knowledge, a satisfaction at one, wanting unique build styles vs animals, or simply their focus is not on the rhino.
On Zootierliste Common Waterbuck is in 78 (53 outside of Europe), versus the Kirk's Dik-dik in 94 (5 outside of Europe) & Common Eland in 225 (99 outside of Europe).
In any case it doesn't influence Frontier decisions. Waterbuck strikes me as a more generic bovid, so I certainly don't think it'd sell a DLC.
Introduced species as a theme might be interesting, being a topic occasionally covered in zoos, here's some candidates:
American
Nutria (North America & Eurasia)
Lowland Paca (Cuba, Algeria)
Red Rumped Agouti (Florida, US Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada)
Eastern Gray Squirrel (Western North America, Britain, Italy, South Africa, Pitcairn islands)
Eastern Cottontail (Spain, France, Italy)
White-nosed Coati (Florida)
American Mink (Europe)
Guianan Squirrel Monkey (Florida)
Musk-ox (Norway, Russia)
Wapiti (Argentina, Chile, New Zealand)
Mule Deer (Argentina, Hawaii)
White-tailed Deer (Europe, Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, New Zealand)
Mallard (South America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand)
Muscovy Duck (USA, Canada, Hawaii, Europe, Australia, New Zealand)
Ruddy Duck (Britain, France, Morocco, Tunisia)
Canada goose (Europe, Chile, Argentina, Japan, New Zealand)
Wild Turkey (Czechia, Germany, Hawaii, New Zealand)
Chilean Tinamou (Easter Island)
Black and White Tegu (Florida & Georgia)
Alligator Snapping Turtle (Czechia, Germany, Hungary, South Africa)
Just to correct something here, the EAZA seem to have reversed their thinking on the gaur - the recent EAZA report from 2023 that you linked above mentioned that the decision was being reviewed, and since then zoos have imported new animals and started breeding them again. I imagine when the 2024 report comes out next year, they will make public that they have changed back to also managing the gaur as a breeding programme.
Oh Neat, but it must be said that they are only considering reverting it thanks to the gaurs holders simply refusing to phase out the species, aside for it the situation would stay the same. Besides, the AZA phase out it's still in place as only Bronx is breeding them, and my original point still stands.
Anyway glad that the future looks bright for european gaurs at least.
Now that we have killed and slayed the entire Idea of Latin America Animal Pack, your proposals for the new pack and animal roster? [Other then Keepers Collection Pack]
I’m gonna make a pack for myself, it may have been something I have made before, or at least something similar to it.
It’s the Education Pack
Musk Ox to teach about the ice age and other “ancient” animals. With the wolves also highlights predator and prey (artic wolves already in game), and likewise display how animals adapt for the cold.
Golden lion tamarin to teach about conservation, and our “close relatives”.
Peere David’s deer is another animal to teach about conservation, and with its antlers it’s a good animal to teach about mating.
Nile crocodile to teach about predator and prey interactions, and well as parenting. Also an animal about migration!
Demoiselle cranes to teach about migration, this species goes over the Himalayas!
White Faced Whistling Duck to teach about habitat adaptation, webbed feet for swimming and perfectly adapted for living in their rainforest home. Also teaches about interspecies enrichment. I will stan this animal until I see that final dlc roster.
Golden pheasant to teach about attraction, mating, and plumage.
Exhibit animal: Caribbean hermit crab also an animal that teaches about finding homes and how animals deal with predators.
With this pack will come a good handful of props! This includes antlers, horns, teeth/ skulls, claws/ paws, wings, some skeletons, and new education signs. Like for the great migration in Africa, predator and prey interactions, enrichment items and what they are for, species enrichment, biomes, and others.

Forests, Treetops, Savannah*, Children's Zoo, Islands, Steppe, Nocturnal*
*I don't think it would make the best finale... Forests: Matchie's Tree Kangaroo, Golden Pheasant, Olive Baboon, Geoffroy's Spider Monkey, Golden Lion Tamarin, Southern Pudu, Short-eared Dog and Panther Chameleon for Exhibit. Anniversary would be Patagonian Mara and Greater Rhea.

I love the roster and am pleasantly surprised to see Demoiselle Crane. And the props would add a lot to the game. I'd also hope for smaller primitive "plaster" shapes so that we could create our own education items...

Oh yeah I get that feeling. I tried to make a chainsaw and so many of the shape props are absolutely huge! I’ve been taking screenshots on steam, I really want to show what I am making but I need to find a way to get the photos
Man, I could really go for some kind of leak or news right about now. I talked about it with my GF, but I’m really feeling that late October/ Anniversary release. Considering there has been no Steam update yet, we could still be over a month away.
My best guess is that we will get a steam update in early October, with the October unlocked being the announcement.
November 5th is the anniversary date though but I guess we’ll see. I just hope the animals all have the right sounds in the next release. It was very disappointing having the donkey make horse sounds. It used to be a nice little feature having a dedicated team getting the sounds of the animals perfectly implemented. Hopefully a future patch will do the donkey justice. Would like to see a reskin of the lion also but it will more than likely not happen oh well always mods I guess.
I feel like the Anniversary may be the Asiatic Lion.
The Lion has always been their front cover, so supposed they could do an Asiatic Lion for Anniversary for 5th. Though, it would bring a higher quality Lion to the game.

I mean, a revamped lion would be nice. But I would almost rather they "remaster" the base game lion (and maybe a few of the earlier base game and DLC animals) in lieu of a new anniversary species rather than insert the asiatic into the DLC and have it eat up a slot.

A remaster Anniversary Gift would be good and I would be fine with a normal 8 animal pack DLC with the Huge Remaster, makes sense for 6 months of work.

I think it would be neat to get “new species” for each year of Planet Zoo. As a free update animal of course.
Asiatic Lion
European Brown Bear
Sumatran Tiger
American Flamingo
Greater Rhea
The first three animals would all be improvements of base game animals, while giving us some cool subspecies. While the American Flamingo and Greater Rhea are “easy clones” of the current ostrich and flamingo. These two birds would bring the base game bird roster to 5, while also giving base game some more South American animals to play with.

As long as I get to keep the American flamingo and greater Rhea then everything is a deal for me lol.
Idk in free updates base game got:
The red ruffed lemur, which is a very close “clone” of one already in game. Bringing base game to three lemurs.
Red deer, which base game really needed a European animal and base games only deer.
The collard peccary, which was a needed North American and South American animal. Also a second pig to the warthog (I get the peccary is technically a different group but for all intents and purposes it’s another pig).
For the last two free anniversary animals they served a very clear purpose to boosting the base games roster. Adding some much needed animals, while expanding on some continental representation. Likewise the animals added were needed, but also were never near the top of the meta wishlist.
So going off that, it’s an animal not near the top of the meta wishlist, would boost the base games roster, and give some much needed continental representation. Makes me hopeful we could get a bird! Any bird can pretty much fit the anniversary criteria, and we have three birds available from basegame that could all get a pretty good clone or two.
