Fun fact: according to newly released concept art SA pack was definitely supposed to include giant otters and even possibly kind of spider monkey.
Wonder if they just permanently scrapped the spider monkey, or saved it for later. The strange part is we didn’t even have brachiation back in 2020.
Given that this is just concept art who knows if they even started developing any of these things. But there's definitely stuff in these that we wound up getting later than the targeted pack so who knows...
At least we know they've previously considered it. I'd actually be quite curious to see the concept art for
all of the packs at some point. Just to see what we got versus the original concepts, etc. Plus? It's always gorgeous!
Would you guys be fine with the final animal pack having 8 animals as usual or do you think a bit more animals (10-12) is needed to be satisfying enough?
And what animals you think are an absolute must have if it is just 8 animals?
I could get behind an 8 animal pack if we also got scenery and the picks were
perfect. 3-4 South American animals plus tree kangaroo, secretary bird, etc. And some sort of fun WTE animal (or a brand new exhibit type). My ideal roster would be something like this for a pack of 8 animals:
- Matschie's Tree Kangaroo
- Secretary Bird
- South American Coati
- Ocelot
- Golden Lion Tamarin
- Scarlet Ibis
- Reeve's Muntjac
- Exhibit: Slow Loris
And if we were able to bump it up to 12? I'd add the NA Black Bear, NA river otter, and burrowing owl with one additional exhibit species. If I were being more realistic and skewing toward community tastes though I'd swap out those last two for the Blackbuck and Walrus. Haha.
I'm assuming here that we aren't going to get macaws or anything like that. And the Slow Loris would have the same issues in habitat form as sloths (and isn't a WTE candidate) so... An exhibit box that's a new shape (more horizontal) would be an interesting, fun way to end on in the absence of parrots or budgies.

Palm Civet could be cool! I'd also love African civet though.
Man, yes! A civet would be awesome. They're so gorgeous! But sadly, I think they fall too squarely in the "oddball" category at this stage. Haha.
