DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

Hmm... i like my Islands pack better... also, isn't the Echidna exclusive to mainland Australia? Not sure we should be counting a whole continent as an island...
They live on New Guinea as well.

Edit: And Tasmania, as Stygi reminded me
My ideal Coastal Animal Pack would look something like this:
  • Green Sea Turtle
  • Southern Elephant Seal
  • Walrus
  • Australian Pelican
  • Marine Iguana
  • Common Eider
  • Cuban Crocodile
  • 5 marine fish as Exhibit Animals
I don't expect it from Frontier at this stage, bit if we were ever to get a Coastal pack, 5 exhibit fish would do so much better than any scenery for that theme.

You realise Australasia is not Australia + Asia, right?
The Australasian biogeographical realm includes Sulawesi and a few other islands. Though to be fair "Australasia" typically only refers to Australia and New Zealand.

Underrated pack theme imo if they continue to merge multiple continents into packs I could definitely see them doing Australasia. It would be a great way to put in the tree roo then just add a bunch of popular clones from both areas like lowland Anoa, gaur, blackbuck, a pheasant, etc. Anoa specifically would be one I would love to see.

Australasia is already a biogeographical term that does not refer to asia and australia

the short beaked echidna is found on new guinea, tasmania and australia which by some definitions is an island. However there is the much better choice of the eastern long beaked echidna which are exclusively island dwellers native to new guinea look similar and are bigger than their short beaked cousins.

Their global captive presence is relegated to a single elderly animal at Taronga Zoo though, and given short-beaked echidnas are both widespread in captivity and also way more versatile in general (representing mainland Australia and Tasmania as well as New Guinea and occurring in virtually every terrestrial habitat on the continent) I think it'd be a bit disappointing if they were the echidna species we ended up getting for PZ, as much as I absolutely adore them IRL (all monotremes are among the coolest animals ever).

I have a mate who got the opportunity to go into the enclosure with and even pet Taronga's long-beaked echidna (his name is JR, he's approximately 56 years old and lived in zoos on three different continents) earlier this year and I am insanely jealous lol. Possibly the coolest individual zoo animal you could meet.

Not my first time posting a potential pack here... but my first post was assuming that pack 20 would be the final one. If we assume there are many more to come, here's what I'd love. It's a bit of a double theme with each pack playing off the other. I still believe the final pack will be a release without any theme other than high demand species, so none of these packs fall into that category, meaning there would be at least 1 more DLC after these.

Continents Animal Pack
1. Honey Badger
2. Northern Rockhopper Penguin
3. Blackbuck
4. White Stork
5. Musk Ox
6. Greater Bilby
7. Golden Lion Tamarin (Headline)

Fairly self explanatory, the pack features 1 habitat animal from each continent. I considered Elephant Seal for Antarctica but they really don't exist in zoos anymore. It's incredibly hard to find Europe-exclusive animals!

Islands Animal Pack
1. Coconut Crab
2. Hawaiian Monk Seal
3. Takahē
4. Walrus (Headline)
5. Panther Chameleon (Exhibit)
6. Lord Howe Island Stick Insect (Exhibit)
7. Tuatara (Exhibit)

Again, self explanatory enough. Animals that are predominantly found on islands, the largest of which I'm accepting is Greenland/Madagascar sized, so sorry Australia. Since most island life is relatively small, this is a perfect opportunity to return to including Exhibit species in DLC. I included the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect as a major success story of conservation efforts.

6th Year Anniversary Animal
Southern Coati

Not my first choice personally but there sure are a lot of people that want it. It feels like this could be a peace offering from Frontier.

So... i've been thinking what to expect for the next DLC (and the future).

It was clear after these past two DLC's (ZK and Americas) that we shouldn't expect anything groundbreaking in terms of gameplay features or updates (so no aquatic or aviary systems, no exhibit overhaul (null walls may still be a possibility though), no better herding or social system for the animals, perching enrichment items (or any enrichment item really)) or any animal that implies a lot of resources to be made or isn't directly based on an already existing animal (so no secretary bird, tree kangaroo, echidna, pelicans, spider monkeys, tamarins, patagonian mara, burrowing owl, roadrunner, spoonbill, ibis, gerenuk, musk ox, etc). We also we shouldn't expect more than one foliage piece per update / pack. Of course not full building set either (so mesh or the log cabin a lot of people want also not likely).

So what do we think is next then? And would you guys prefer for them to keep puting out DLCs, even if we are just going to get animal packs full of clones just with improved visuals? I think i've personally reached a point in which there are a few clones i would still like (blackbuck, gelada, serval, greater kudu, honey badger, nile croc, perentie, an asian deer, a duck, black swan, rockhopper penguin (idk if this one really counts since it would require new animations imo) etc.) but not a lot... most of the animals i still have real interest in are pretty unique i think and i don't really expect them anymore so i think i'll be ok if next DLC is the last.

Some animals could indeed benefit for having a high quality alternative like lions (asiatic lion?), tigers (sumatran?), bears (ABB and EBB?), zebras (Grevy´s?), etc. and some of those i wouldn't hate to be honest but is not the kind of content i look forward to.

I finally got to meet him last time I went to taronga he is adorable and finally has the place and prominence he deserves in the new nocturnal house. Also I only meant better in the sense it would fit the theme better obviously functionally the short beaked is way better just isnt the vibe of an islands pack.

Really depends. I could see some "clone packs" really take off. But then I could see some fail. I still believe that there's only 1 DLC left, after which the game will end. I was hoping to bring most of SA to green, but I dunno if it'll happen now. At least it's not red and orange anymore, though

I think we could get all regions to green with a low effort savannah pack and harder rainforest pack.

savannah animal pack (covers indian savanah and patagonian pampas
  • blackbuck
  • rhesus macaque
  • patagonian mara
  • guanaco
  • guar
  • pampas deer
  • honey badger

rainforest animal pack
  • goodfellows tree kangaroo
  • south american coati
  • black howler monkey
  • golden lion tamarin
  • common squirrel monkey
  • new guinea singing dog
  • brolga

Awesome! I have considered flying to Sydney one weekend just to see him but neither time nor money would make that a sensible decision at the moment unfortunately.

Also I only meant better in the sense it would fit the theme better obviously functionally the short beaked is way better just isnt the vibe of an islands pack.
Yeah I agree there, personally the Australian animal I'd be gunning for in an islands pack would be the eastern quoll (almost acts like a devil substitute for the pack haha, another endangered Tasmanian dasyurid that formerly occurred on mainland Australia).

time to artificially inflate this post count
everyone take the time to dedicate a single post to a single animal

Taxonomy: They are callitrichids, members of the family of tamarins and marmosets. This family is a part of the New World monkey infraorder and represents a large divide in the primate lineage. New World monkeys are deeply underrepresented in PZ, and callitrichids are not yet represented. Mods could cover additional species, but at least one tamarin for a starting point would be great.

Physical Characteristics and Behavior: They have a body length of about 10 inches and weigh a bit over a pound, making them the largest of the tamarin/marmoset clade. Their faces and paws are hairless, but their mane, body, and long tails are covered with strikingly bright golden-orange fur. They would be small for a PZ animal, but tamarins are so common in zoos that they are an excellent candidate to push that boundary. In the wild, they live in groups of about 2-11 usually related members. As primates, they spend much of their time climbing and would presumably use a few enrichment objects. They eat insects and fruit.

Range and Conservation History: They live in the tropical Atlantic forests of Brazil and would help complete the lacking South American Animal roster. Pet trade and deforestation greatly reduced their wild population since the 1500s. Habitat loss and fragmentation eventually reduced their wild numbers to below 150 individuals. Many zoos, including the Smithsonian Institute, began cooperating in a large captive breeding program, which brought tamarins back to 3,600 individuals. A recent yellow fever outbreak caused the wild population to drop to around 2,500, but researchers vaccinated many individuals to contain the spread. With their territory so fragmented, zoo reserve populations and continued conservation work remain important for this species’ survival.

Cultural Significance: They are featured on the Brazilian real. From what I’ve seen in real life and based on the votes here, they are the most famous and popular tamarin.

I've seen them at the Smithsonian Zoo (This was my first experience understanding conservation work in a zoo), Singapore Zoo, Roger Williams, and several others.

So what do we think is next then?
The prevailing theme ideas seem to be 'Asia' or 'Safari', both of which make sense and can benefit from 'clone'-heavy rosters.

It's impossible to really imagine though. We don't even know if DLC20 will come yet. We'll either be waiting for the next Unlocked or until the next cycle (which now seems to be ~6 months instead of ~3 months). IMO if they don't mention anything in the next couple of Unlocked streams I'll be erring on the side of caution.

However there is the much better choice of the eastern long beaked echidna which are exclusively island dwellers native to new guinea look similar and are bigger than their short beaked cousins.
Ehh... I'm not sure I'd call the Eastern Long-Beaked Echidna "better"... maybe thematically it is, but appearance wise it definitely is not...

If we're gonna list lists I may as well put mine down:

:: Islands Pack ::
  • Tree Kangaroo (New Guinea)
  • Musk-Ox (Greenland)
  • Japanese Raccoon Dog (Japan)
  • Hawaiian Goose (Hawaii)
  • Cuban Crocodile (Cuba)
  • Aye-Aye (Madagascar)
  • Northern Rockhopper Penguin (Gough Island)

A self-explanatory pack; there are many other potential options, including the Victoria Crown Pidgeon (New Guinea; although I prefer one animal per island) and the Short-Beaked Echidna (Tasmania; although it's range is far larger in Australia).

I should probably mention the Southern Rockhopper Penguin as well, which is more popular than the Northern according to the Metalist. However, the Southern can be found on mainland South America, whereas the Northern is exclusive to islands.

Not really sure what kind of scenery would work with this, considering it's all over the place... maybe something like the Europe pack where multiple countries saw representation?

:: Daylight Pack ::
  • Grey-Crown Crane
  • South American Coati
  • Patagonia Mara
  • Northwestern Blackbuck
  • Harbor Seal
  • Red Junglefowl -OR- Himalayan Monal
  • Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey -OR- Lion-Tailed Macaque -OR- Red Howler Monkey

Similar to the Twilight Pack and its various crepuscular animals, the Daylight is built around diurnal animals. Considering the number of diurnal animals in the world, there's likely too many alternatives to list... the ones I went with sounded easy enough to work with, unique in their own ways, and feature a variety of colors; fitting for a pack based on the light of day.

Rather than building objects, I propose a wealth of new plants from around the world and gardening stuff like mulch and flowerbeds.
