Proposal Discussion Do More Public Updates for Contributions, learn from Star Citizen

Frontier should learn from Star Citizen where they have a frequently updated website for their space sim.

Consequently they have received more than $7,458,173 via contributions and pledges (separate from kickstarter).

Elite: Dangerous should do likewise, with a weekly youtube show such as Wingman's Hangar, and publish the Newsletter content on the official Elite website.

This would benefit Elite with better promotion and generate more contributions.

Americans always do things better I'm afraid! That said, I don't think that means the game itself will be better than Elite: Dangerous. But yes, they do have an incredibly impressive build up to Star Citizen.

i think you have too narrow a focus in your demand for updates, if you take the total 'Official' output of everything ED into account we are getting on average an update every two days, sometimes more.

the last update was by T.James - author of out of the darkness, the previous one was on the 11th from the Team at Lave Radio.

In total we have had 8 updates from the ED Universe since the beginning of may counting Lave Radio.

I agree that a central source is needed for news, so i went ahead and created one at http://elitestories.co.uk/

most of the site updates itself automatically and if anyone should spot a news item i miss (such as a TV news piece posted on youtube) send me a link and i'll see that it's added to the appropriate section.

Eh? :S Your two examples are a book (that many haven't even pledged for) by an independent author and an unofficial podcast of a few fans chatting! Not saying those don't have value but they're hardly "official"! :p

Please, no Ashley's Hangar... I'm pretty happy with the kind of updates we've seen so far. A lot of the Star Citizen stuff seems to be chaff in the wind, and presumably takes development time=money away from the game, while potentially extracting the last few centimes of cash from backers. If Frontier feel they need extra £££s to perfect what they're offering for the initial release, then I would say 'yes' to a marketing drive. If they're happy they can deliver what they want with their current budget, then don't divert resources into PR guff.

Essentially a large part of what will make the games succeed or fail is whether or not the flight mechanics are awesome or suck. Rather than put dev time into creating videos, I'd rather they play-tested the game, or something like that. If they need a second opinion, I live quite nearby...

EDIT: Just realised, my internal censor has gone on holiday. This was a jokey post, and the comment about 'Ashley's Hangar' is not intended as a slight in any way. Ashley does an awesome job!

the book is an official book, the pod cast not so much but its still an update.

Star Citizen has crossed the limit for me and their updates have become an annoyance rather than a point of interest. I rarely pay them any attention and I don't like the cash hungry style they have (selling in-game goods for real money even after they have themselves admitted that they have more money than they can spend).

I much prefer the more European approach of Frontier: publish an update when you actually have something to share. Even better: more than one something.

One thing is for sure SC has built up a huge amount of hype (& cash) and matching that hype is going to be very difficult. I didn't back it but I did back ED and Limit Theory and I far prefer their approach to the razz-a-matazz of SC.

I'll put away the green screen then.

Hope you saw my edit, which was made before you replied! It's one of those days where it seems I shouldn't really be posting...

By all means go ahead with Ashley's Hangar, as long as it doesn't mean the next newsletter is delayed. Have we got one coming up this Wednesday?

I have to agree that the SC stuff seems a little 'filler' TBH
Yeah sure it would be nice to have more content but I would prefer that the effort is spent on the game.

I considered SC as it looks like very impressive, BUT..

  1. Their website sucks, it is very difficult for old eyes to read, and it tends toward info overload
  2. The whole thing lacks a certain style (just my opinion)
  3. I got the impression its mission based (but that may be incorrect)
  4. Its subscription¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ (kills it for me even if ED was not being made)

Sure, I would like daily video updates and invites to tour DB's office and tea & biccys at his Nan's house afterwards, but on the whole I am happy. And the good atmosphere on the forum and the fantastic fan creations is worth a lot to me.

To make it more exciting, could the devs do something a little bit original? I'm thinking a kind of 'Challenge Ashley' type affair, with plenty of 'helicopter bum-shots'. Each week, the devs hide a bit of concept art, or in-game footage somewhere in the UK, and Ashley has to follow some cryptic clues to find it.

Not defending SC, but...

They're launching a new website soon.
It has a story side but also a sandbox side (neither is mandatory AFAIK although the story side will of course run out and then sandbox is your option)
It's not subscription!
