Do Not Install nVidia Driver 347.09 if You're Using Oculus Rift

Mixed results... Got it working correctly, but not seeing any real performance boosts

What did you do to get it working chap? You've got a beast of a rig so no improvement to you might squeeze a bit more for a lower build.

Apparently reading any post prior to this page is lost in this forum. I already walked through the fix to get these drivers to work.

The glitch with SLI an the Side By Side Picture in VR is fixed by changing the Primary "Selected" in the Right Click on desktop -> Screen Resolution -> Make this my Main Display Menu (pick the Rift, or if the Rift is already primary, pick your monitor.) Making thr Rift Primary doesn't have to stay permanent as a reboot will force you to change Primary again. It seems something about the driver broke VR from initial boot for the Rift settings in ED. (If you look at the Graphics Options and have the Rift selected upon booting up without cycling Primary monitors, the Refresh rate and a few other options are RED instead of White. Once you swap Primary to which ever it wasn't from bootup, and select the Rift from the selection in the Graphics Options in Elite, the options for Refresh rate and such are White again and that's when you know it will work once you hit apply.

It isn't a perfect fix, and ever reboot you have to start Elite, Close Elite, Switch Whatever is primary (rift/monitor) to whatever isn't, it isn't always the Rift, and then start Elite and switch to the rift (primary/secondary/whichever it is now) and then it works fine.

However I am going to mess with other driver versions/settings to see if I can get DSR working again. Apparently that broke for the Rift too and that I haven't found a workaround for yet.

Yeah I would be interested too in what you did SLACKR. A lot of your other posts have been helpful. I tried it yesterday with making the rift as primary display but never got past the double display in right eye with gtx 970s in sli.

Has anyone tried any of the nvidia drivers without selecting to load 3D controller during installation? Does not installing this remove any of the options in the nvidia control panel?

I spent about an hour yesterday playing with the new driver without success and I am looking for any other suggestions before jumping back in for round two.

Thanks!!!

Steady on man. I had read the post and tried the suggestion, hence asking what steps SlackIR took, if they were the same as you kindly posted then I could go back and see if I had implemented them properly.
It worked for you, who's to say it will work for everyone?

Repeated Steps and works on multiple machines with completely different configurations...

Usually that tells me it will work for others, but since nobody seems to confirm/deny it, and others say "Hey I got it to work...." followed by :crickets: and yet they get acknowledgement, Then I ask myself why I even bother to try and help.

It is cutting into valuable Space flight time.

And again, I never said make the Rift Primary alone. The instructions are to change the Primary screen from one to the other with neither needing to be one or the other. It makes no sense, but it works repeatedly. The Rift being Primary is usually a fix for other DK2 demos/games, but in this case it doesn't have to be every time.

Best to start Elite, see if it's broken in the DK2, quit Elite, Switch Primary to something else, Start Elite, Switch graphics options to the Rift screen again, then it should work fine.

Thanks IM001. Did what you explained with no luck. I have multiple monitors connected but disable through the nvidia control panel. Do you think that I should physically remove the secondary and tertiary monitors... Reboot... And then turn on the rift...install new driver... Reboot with rift on... And then try what you have explained?

I tried this on my laptop (780m) to see what kind of performance boost I could get... Just followed the rules... Plug in power adaptor, set as primary monitor etc.

Didn't help at all though... My guess is that because I had to keep the laptop monitor on to make the rift work correctly, any gains in FPS from the driver were lost by having the second screen on. I usually disable the monitor and get a better result.

IM001s post about setting up worked for me, but the cons seem to outweigh the pros at this moment in time. I rolled back again and will wait until NVIDIA sort it out properly.

I have 2 monitors and the Rift connected and all Enabled. I would try that and go from there.

SLI works with 3 Monitors and my SLI 780's however I am unsure if that is a 700 series and newer perk or something they fixed a few drivers ago as I remember that was not always the case.

Also for those that like to Disable monitors, try getting the Rift working correctly first, then see if you can disable the monitor after all is up and running. I have not tested that yet. (In that case, the Rift might have to be primary at the end of the Primary swapping game lol. That might require a reboot if the Rift wins the Non Primary roll that reboot)

I tried multiple ways of getting the new driver to play nice with only the rift display enabled but had no luck. Only seems to work set as primary, with the monitor (s) also on.

Thanks IM001. I only mentioned the disabled monitors because I had noticed a noticeable performance increase for me. Even when disabled windows 8.1 still seems to recognize them even when disabled which often leads to primary, secondary, tertiary roulette upon reboot. Noticed the disabled monitors swap secondary and tertiary positions upon reboots.

I like the challenge of getting the rift working optimally. Rift works great in the previous drivers. Totally agree about the sentiment about losing flight time while helping. Just wanted to say that I appreciate the help!!!

Glad it is working for others. I have messed with the monitor off solution on my HTPC that I use to demo my Rift, but it makes it even more of a hassle then it helps it seems on most games. I will have to tinker with it more when I have some time.

Now I have a question, does the previous driver look correct with SLI in Elite? Or do the Striped Planets and stars return or were they fixed in Beta/Launch?

One thing I discovered.... If you can get the Rift screen up on any of your monitors AND you had your rift turned on before the application was started, you can WINKEY-Left Shift-Right Arrow to move the screen over to the rift's display. May or may not have any affect on the rift but worth trying...

I was able to get it working somewhat by making the rift the primary monitor. The colors were all washed out though so it was still unplayable.

And after rolling back to 344.75 everything works as expected. So much for WHQL.

With as much as nVidia claims to be supporting VR, you'd *think* they would have actually tested a driver touting 'game readiness' with said game and the currently most prevalent HMD. I refuse to believe they don't have one.
