Do try playing with headphones at least once!

Track IR and Astro A50's man oh man, just beautiful.

Logitech G930 Wireless Gaming Headset with boom mic is my aural choice. A charge lasts nine hours of continuous play and you can plug them in while playing if needed. 7.1 Surround Sound brilliance.

Agree! First time I went through the slot with the headphones on was amazing! You get so much more detail with the headphones on.

I have some cheap USB headphones with mic that I've had for ~10 years. Thinking I should spend some money on something better - maybe surround, with a better mic, and comfortable for long play sessions (I don't have very big ears, but they're not small either). Any UK recommendations? I wouldn't want to spend more than I have, and was thinking £30-£40. I have a fairly decent normal speaker setup, but Voice Attack doesn't like all the noise in the background!!

Iam using an Somic G909 7.1 headset. Volume control on it. Microphone as well and a button that activate vibration so it work like a bass boosting. No need for an extra soundcard as it have its own, built in. USB connection. Only downside is that if you unplug it you have to configure it again, so I always keep mine in same USB slot.

I play with headphones all the time. I need it because of voice attack. It sure is beautiful that way but never having played it any other way I don't have anything to compare it to.

FD really nailed the sound in this game, it really is amazing.

Definitely agree, the sound in this game is really cool. I particularly enjoy how varied the engine sounds are on different ships. The fact that the Asp sounds like a single-prop plane straining to climb always makes me smile.

Since getting an EDtracker (fan-tas-tic piece of kit), I've been playing wearing my Sennheiser HD 25-1 headphones, and WOW-OH-BLOOMING-WOWZERS the difference!

There is so much more going on in the sound-scape in ED than I had realised before.

So if you've not given it a go before, do try ED with headphones.

I always play with headphones! And, yes the sound in ED is awesome! I have the Bose AE2 Headphones. Amazing sound and very comfy.

There are people that play games without headphones?

My headphones are more for communication than audio quality, and they weren't that expensive. I'd love to have some nice headphones, but I'd miss my sound system too much. I love the house rumbling bass this game has with a couple subs.

With those headphones, leave a station get out of the Mass Lock and away from traffic (cause if you are in a open game you could get ganked) and then just power down everything to silent mode, with life support on, to just hear the subtle floating ship effects/noises. Then turn off life support and listen as your cabin freezes! Awesome sounding and creepy!

With those headphones... Awesome sounding and creepy!

Thanks for the suggestion.

I do love my Sennheiser's
Frequency response (headphones)16 - 22000 Hz
Expensive (primary use is music production) but worth every penny, and very rugged, with each component replaceable - the design has been around for 10+ years.

I justify the expense by dividing the cost by lifespan... <cough>... honestly it helped...

I alternate between a pair of turtle beach (when I'm in the mood for some voice attack) and the Logitech Z-5500 5.1 speaker setup. The headphones as always bring forth the subtle sounds that you might miss using only speakers, but the Z-5500 has a huge woofer and the bass is just fantastic, a real joy when playing ED and that stellar *cough* sound design.
