Docking Computer in 3.0.3

Has anyone noticed trouble with the docking computer since the update? Twice I've heard a ghastly scraping sound as my Anaconda has gone through the toastrack and loss of speed. Not every time; I can't reproduce the effect at will and the ship wasn't quite brought to a standstill, but I'm nervous about going to get a drink now.

I had my DC run my keelback through the slot at about a 20 degree angle the other night, with my canopy kissing the wall the whole way. It hasn't done that before or since, so I dunno.... fluke?

I have not.

Other than getting terrain alert messages on landings at planetary bases using the DC (reported), I have not run into any clearance issues with any of my ships. I was using my Anaconda for several module hauling runs yesterday and did not encounter any issues with station slot clearance problems.

Only thing I can say, it just make sure you line up with the front of the station before engaging the DC. Its not an Auto-Pilot, but a docking assistant. It should not be engaged when your ship is on the side or at the back of a station.

And its always best to request landing permission when it range, and then fly about 8km away from the front of the station before throttling down. That will give the DC a nice clean line of sight approach when it takes over and does its 180 flip.

I've had that happen pre-3.whatever. It isn't always on the mark, sometimes scraping the slot, and have even had it miss the slot and ram the station a couple of times. The only change I've noticed is the docking computer no longer speeds within a certain range of the slot.

I still have enough confidence in it to take the time to grab a drink. Worst you could return to is a rebuy screen!

The only issues I've observed :

- engaging DC over Planetary Bases can cause heavy Ships to fly themselves out of Envelope and trigger an emergency Afterburner Climb (sinkrate/Altitude Trigger)
- small Ships like a Viper III docking at a Station on a Pad very close to the mailslot tend to impact the Pad hard instead of touching town
- Scenic Geometry near the flight path of some Large Ships (i.e. Beluga, T10 docking at HighTech/Extraction Station) will cause collisions with that interior Structures, if near the flightpath to a Pad at the back end of the Station
- NPCs (they use the same DC for all I know) once past the mailslot, orienting themselves & start aiming for their Pads still ignore a Player Ship and attempt to fly straight through it

Those things occurred during V2.4 already though, so they aren't really new.

A good portion of the reported problems are more pilot error caused by engaging the DC when the ship is way too close to the station entrance to maneuver properly. Always best to give it at least a 6km approach distance from the front of the station.

When you do that, everything will work fine.

I have been using the DC since the early days of its introduction into the game way back when. The DC we have today is lightyears superior to what we had all those years ago.

Just remember... It still is a "Docking" Computer... NOT an "Auto-Pilot". :)

I don't know what you're all talking about the DC not being an auto pilot, I've been testing it in my fully loaded cutter from the back of the station and the sides without a hitch. And on my battle Vette I've seen no problems either.

The only issue I've had was maybe overshooting the pad by a couple meters but it corrected immediately. That does seem like it could happen when you're hauling 700 tons of cargo

Its not designed to be used that way. The fact that the version in 3.03 can actually deal with improper applications is testament to how it has improved. Back in 1.4, doing what you are doing would guarantee a lost ship 99% of the time. ;)

That use case is still not advised, so if it ends up screwing up and losing your ship for you, don't blame it on the DC. I definitely would not leave your game unattended while the DC is performing the approach. ;)

Eh, I've activated it from the back and side of a station hundreds of times from DBXs to Anacondas, without a single issue.

Good for you. Do you want a cookie?

I'm just telling you it isn't designed to be used as an Auto-Pilot, so any screwups it might cause down the road, including the loss of a ship is your choice.

No issues here with the DC, seems to working very well at orbitals and surface ports (T9/Cutter) Only problem is half the stations out in the Pleiades do not have autodock capability

it's working better than it ever has for me, i use it on my cutter/conda/vette and so far, it's been fine.
Previously though, it would get itself mixed up and caused all sorts of trouble.

The only thing that annoys me is the "waiting in queue" thing, even when i can just fly myself in and there's no one coming in or out.....
