Does anyone else find the death screen awfully annoying?

If/when I die in a game, all I want to do is get back into the action. I do not want to discuss my insurance premiums and options. Who thought that this was a good idea? I can safely assume that when most/all players die, they have the 'red mist', and therefore want to get back into the fray immediately, not to put the kettle on and lay the insurance paperwork out.

I wish there was a toggle switch where I can 'opt in' to have my credit account emptied of my rebuy costs and auto spawn at the nearest station with a 3-5 sec timer. In other games, they allow you to get back into the action, but with Elite, by the time I get the "confirm & redeploy" button to behave & work, I've lost interest in the mission that I was doing (and the game itself), and just abandon it.

As an alternative idea after dying, you respawn at the nearest station/carrier automatically (3-5 secs at the most), then you have to go to the ship desk to discuss your insurance claims/selecting an available ship, rather than discussing your premium options when you're dead, which is how it currently is.

When you get blown up, you need to be able to choose whether to claim insurance on your ship, apply for finance or be issued a loaner Sidewinder. I suppose it would be a nice QoL feature to be able to select a default response, but even without that it takes what, a second or two to choose the option you want? You'll spend more time in supercruise getting back into the action, even if you have a SCO drive in your ship.

The rebuy screen is also where the game informs you as to what you've lost.

I'm not sure that your proposed alternative would be any quicker. If I want to get back into the action with the ship I was using before I died, then doing so from the rebuy screen puts me right back in the pilot seat as soon as I select it, without having to wander over to the Inter Astra desk to sort anything out.

Maybe I just don't get exploded often enough to be familiar with the rebuy screen but my only real gripe is how unintuitive it all is.

I'd prefer it if (a bit like the main menu) there was just a row of options depicted as large icons - a ship with an X through it, a ship and a ship with some cargo stacked in front of it - to depict no rebuy, ship-only and ship & cargo.

Every time I get exploded I spend about 5 minutes reviewing my choices to ensure I don't accidentally abandon a fully-engineered ship etc.

If there was a main-menu Options tick-box for "auto rebuy current ship & cargo if possible" I'd certainly enable it, not to speed things up but just to ensure I don't screw up by clicking the wrong thing.

Lordy, no!
Respawning aboard a station, walking to a desk and talking to an NPC to arrange for the return of your ship would be torture.
And, from a practical POV, it'd create all sorts of potential problems if the game crashed or there was a connection problem before you'd successfully arranged for the return of your ship.

It is very annoying to see the rebuy screen because seeing it is so rarely by our own choice.

The screen itself is I think much less likely to lead you into the wrong selection than it used to be 10 years ago.

The fact that it takes a little time to go through and doesn’t just dump you straight back into the game is a plus precisely because it lets you calm down and think.

I suppose you could stay dead for tax purposes.

It's a rare event to go through the rebuy screen for me & when it happens I am usually annoyed because I almost certainly just made a costly mistake & lost a load of stored data or whatever, so I think for me it would be a frustrating experience no matter how slick the process were.

But IIRC although it provides lots of options that cover contingencies I have personally never needed I've always just been able to hit 'ok' a bunch of times until I respawn. IME it's only confusing because of a lack of familiarity.

So imo the workaround to mitigate any frustration or confusion is to be reckless, rebuy more often & get used to the process ;)

...or git gud and don't die. Simples.

I'd prefer insurance to be an upfront thing tbh...never really liked it the way it's been done. It's just not realistic.

The insurance premium is paid upfront by the Pilots Federation, who are the ones providing the cover. We are just paying the policy (voluntary?) excess, it seems to be modelled on UK motor insurance practice.

You can die in Elite?

I'm a big fan of whisky, but I'm scared to mistakenly click the button for the free Sidewinder...
My physician loves it and always congratulates me for my blood work results ;)

I think that if you're dying frequently enough for this to be annoying, PEBKAC.*

*or you simply have more learning to do, in this game about measuring expectations, massive power creep, longstanding balance issues, and heaps of hidden nuances particularly with outfitting
