Does Elite Dangerous need FPS content?

I, from time to time, play FPS games. Enjoy them even. But.....I'm not sure this game needed FPS content added on.

The thing is, I'm here to fly spaceships - I suspect I'm not alone (?) - and this game is (for me) the leader of the pack in that category. I wouldn't be here otherwise, or invested so much time into this game, and its given me plenty of joy, wonder and the occasional what?!? moment back in return for that investment.

If I wanted to play a FPS, I have more than enough games to quench my killing-spree thirst. When I look back at the 2017 Expo, I can't remember thinking back then that "this game needs some FPS stuff in it!".

Maybe I'll be surprised and FDEV will blow me away with just how good FPS in Odyssey is, while making established FPS games like Gears, Doom, CoD etc look silly by comparison? Maybe I'll actually enjoy defending remote, Imperial outposts on some remote ice world against Federation aggression?

But, right now, Megaship Piracy has been broken for months. Core mining has been broken for months. That's a big hit against two professions (and one scenario) in the game. I'm hopeful these issues will be fixed before Odyssey is released (or soon after? please?) and that players looking for non-FPS content have something to enjoy.

I guess I was hoping for something more......unique from Odyssey? Spacewalks to investigate broken hulls of ships (which are already in the game), taking SRVs into cave systems to find loot and explore what's down there ("what do you mean we get earthquakes down here?!!?") ....I'm looking forward to the next Dev diary which will hopefully make me and this post look silly.

I think the difference is that (under ideal circumstances) we'll not just see FPS - instead we'll get "FP-X".

X = many different activities

Personal focus can then make of that what you prefer, just like anyone can do that with Ships already.

PS.
Unsure where i.e. Mining on foot would come in. Not yet quite seeing me hacking away at some rock with a 3307.a.D. pick axe ;)

Oh I'm aware, its FDEVs game, they can do what they want with Odyssey. Just as I can decide if I'm going to buy Odyssey or not.
I know, I'm just joking.

I do think the combat is just a part of being able to do first person though, salvage, exploration, physical multicrew, hopefully mining ... we will see. I just dont think they've revealed it yet, deliberately.

I've approached it from a different angle.

This is a spaceship flying game indeed, but we do land in bases and space stations, all we are being given in Odyssey is the opportunity to get out of the ships and meet up with the currently invisible game assets.

FPS would be part of a dysfunctional Galaxy, after all we get plenty of 'fly to X and kill Y terrorists / Pirates / Civilians' and all Odyssey is doing is moving it to being on-foot instead of Ship / SRV based.

Do we need it? I'd not be bothered if it didn't exist, but am quite looking forward to 'having a go' and seeing how well, or otherwise, FPS has been integrated into the game.
Unsurprisingly, I have little intention to do any PvP 'measuring' with the rest of the 'boys & girls'..

The other aspect of first person is just scale, I'm not sure we yet realise the difference it's going to make, in conjunction with the much more detailed landscapes to make first person work.

edit - so what I suppose I'm saying its it's not do we need FPS (combat), it's do we need first person. I think so.

Meh, there are plenty of FPS's out there, and I don't play them much. I do like some sorts of shooters, though, if you consider games like Fallout or Outer Worlds shooters. They have on-foot combat, anyway, and I like it.

But for me space legs is more about just being able to get up and walk around and do stuff. I hope there's more to do than shoot at stuff. And PVP doesn't interest me at all.

Anyway, I'm sure I will enjoy many parts of Odyssey, but not everything, just like I did in Horizons when it came out. There will be new stuff for me to do, and that's all good.

Even if it ends up not being something I enjoy, I welcome it (isn't this the case of many careers in the game? For example, I've never mined). It puts this game at an even bigger level of complexity. We have this huge universe meant to be 1:1 and some parts of it are inaccessible due to ongoing development.

Not a fan of the FPS part, but space legs in general are a good addition to Elite (and one promised from basically the start).
Adding FPS elements will hopefully open up the game for a broader audience and deliver enough money for more updates.

More updated then hopefully mean space legs in starports and ships. And more ships.
Did I mention more ships, like the Panther Clipper?

It was always going to have out of ship content (Braben made that clear) and 1/3 of the game is combat.

So yes, it does. It'd be weird if they omitted it. And I think way too much is being made out of the fact the game is getting it. Walking about is a key part of FDev's plan, always has been. It will be required to do lots of things in future. Not just shooting stuff but yes, the game involves that...

I mean, Braben actually said he'd like game hunting on planets that support life right? Can't get there if they don't add guns and feet.

I mean, the game already has a lot of stuff you can do, combat, exploration and stuff, Odyssey will bring even more including FPS, why not add some more stuff into the game as long as they are doing it exactly how it should be. Can't wait to see how the game will be
.

Seems like it's better to ask "why not?" instead of "why?".

I don't ask this glibly but, what else could FDev have done instead?

Seems like the other main contender was "atmo' landings" and we're getting the bare-bones of that with space-legs.
Sure, it'd be nice to have Star Citizen style cities and planets but, once FDev implement Odyssey, I'm sure they'll be looking at how far they can push it to add more and more surface assets.

I guess FDev could just plod along, adding more and more ships, more diverse missions and more narrative (which isn't a bad idea, TBH) but if they really want to "grow" the game it needs to expand in new directions and space-legs (and all the related stuff that might bring in future) is one of the biggest additions they could make.

Honestly, about the only other direction I could see FDev expanding the game would be to add an RTS aspect to it, and allow players to treat it a bit like EVE online.
That might be fun, if you could order your ships around remotely, and then jump into them to do stuff when required.

Of course, "Why not" is the right question mark here, I am sure FDev will keep updating Odyssey after it's release, and I'm looking forward to test every single new thing in it. Adding more stuff will surely give the playerbase more opportunities to expand their gameplay and their overall story, every player has its own story in this game. Many people compare Star Citizen and they say that ED should have some similar stuff. No, games shouldn't copy each other and they should bring something much more original, that's is exactly what will make this game much more complex and amazing.

I'm not objecting to the presence of space legs at all. I was on Team #AtmosphericPlanets so yeah, logically, space legs would come first.

I'm just curious what else is there for players to do apart from pew-pew? It looks like a lot of time has been spent on FPS and it looks good, but, what other content does Odyssey offer to the professions of trading, mining, exploring (beyond 'scan this plant fungus'), smuggling and piracy? I'm sure some of that content will involve combat but I'd love it if there was more to it than that.

To be answered in a future dev diary I hope, how many of them are there left to show? I think the next one is based on combat.
