Does this game have epic fights?

I don't own it by now, but I am thinking about it. But first I want to iron out a few things, which bug me, before I spend €49.99 and then be disappointed afterwards.
There is no demo, right? Nor I a demo planned, or is it? Because that would definitely be extremely helpful.

There is a Demo as such. If you know somebody who already has the game use their download exe to obtain the full game. then use that to play on the trainers. They are after all the game, just teaching tools to get you started. There is a fighting aspect to it as you have to take on a number of ships to pass one part, which I think you may enjoy.

Anyway, I played the original game back in the days on my C64. Mosty just dogfights. But I didn't get very deep into it. What I really liked on my C64 was Space Rogue. Awesome game. Nevertheless, what really impressed me, was X-Wing and Tie-Fighter. Those were awesome, because you had thos really cool epic fights with huge capital ships and lots of small fighters in-between. This is something, I expect from a game with space flight.

Is there something like that? Or is it more like small skirmishes i.e. you vs. 3 pirates etc...

If not, is anything like that planned?

As I have stated above try it out by using the download exe first.

On a personal note, I would like to say that, After being abducted by aliens I want some pay back. So yes I have been in big dog fights with 4-6 pirates and yes I have come up against big ships. This game is not like the OLD C64 version of Elite. This is based, in my opinion, on the Elite Frontier version of the game, and hopefully the Encounter part will follow soon. If you want big battles, group killing and solo play this game has everything.

If some of the things said here have said to you yes buy the game because it sounds great, then buy it. if not save your money. I personally am VERY HAPPY that I got this game on its first day of release. I have not looked back or got upset about not being able to kill something 10 times harder than I am.

Best £30 I have paid for an online game, It is even better than that game called EVE in my opinion.

Met a German guy at Bunda Nav point....teamed up against the 'Wanted' Pythons and Anacondas,Cobras,Vipers,Eagles (Love watching them soar),T6,T7, Sideys etc....
Me in Cobra, he in Federal Dropship....Swapping kills....sharing the incoming from the bigger, heavily armed ships (and a couple of trips back for repairs!)...This went on for must have been over 2 hours!
One of the most Intense,Immersive,Interesting,Challenging, Exciting and scarey experiences I have had in Elite D to date! F 'A' !

Would have been an epic sight if all those turrets fired at individual targets as the 'Cap ship music' queued in, or give it some flak guns, BSG stlye.

You mean you watched then got killed?

Hah, no. Rebuy on this thing is crippling. I took out my fair share of enemy birds, dropping shields and cracking power plants, accrued several tens of thousands worth of combat bonds, then headed back to the nearby station for rearm and repair. I had a whale of a time.

Agreed, Flak would make it epic, like:

I've gotten in a few large scale hairballs(20+ ships or more) and the ones that take place in the ring of a planet are pure white knuckle intense. You not only have to watch out for the asteroids, but the ships as well. :) Anyone saying they can't be found isn't looking in the right places.

A little taste of epic...

My Most epic fights have been around the capital ship conflict zones. But I have been involved in multiple minor epic battles whilst hunting in the resource extraction sites within ring of planets. The game is as epic as you want it to be. Elite Dangerous is a new born baby and it will grow and develop and become even more spectacular than it already is.
Here is a little taste of epic for you.

only in the forms mate

Take the negative nancy replies with a grain of salt, there is a contingent of people that hang around these forums that apparently have nothing better to do than bash a game that they don't like. There definitely are big fights, the flight model is the best of any space sim Ive ever played, and it is quite a good game if you like space sims (if you're looking for Call of Duty: Space Ops though, this isnt it and you should pass on it), with quite a lot of continual development on the way.

There are a lot of reviews out there that will give you a better idea of what it is and what it isn't than you'll get here on the forums currently.

wow fanboi's panties bunched a bit?

in a true large scale mmo style no....in a smaller scale multiplayer/singleplay type engagement yes they have em.i love the flight model, hate some the very subpar mechanics they use,and pray one day they ditch the p2p nonsense...it makes grouping with anyone a crap shoot

The battles are like 30-50 ships max from what I've seen with a big ship sitting nearby or in the middle, you have no impact on it, it's just a never ending furball. That said it's pretty cool, but you can pretty easily tell from the amount of people trying to hype it up without actually saying what it is that it's not what you are looking for. It's pretty fun but the fights are more akin to a wwii flight simulator than epic space fights. It's no first person sins of a solar empire.

This is epic space battles:

This is the benchmark, and it was set a long time ago.

As such, Elite? No. Not so much. But then, that was never really the purpose.

(Incidentally, anyone who hasn't played Freespace 2 needs to grab a copy from GOG.com right now. It remains the greatest combat space sim ever made.)

You don't need to find somebody who has it as the launcher is here for demo purposes:

then you should get the re-released X- TvT games on GOG. Nothing comes close, 20 years later

I think Elite Dangerous does that pretty good. If you have enough players with you and can put an effort to get what you want. I.e. create a conflict zone.

To summarize: The most epic fights are...
1) Troll vs Troll (here on the forums, as mentioned above)
2) Large NPC ship ramming smaller human ship (not sure how epic that is...)
3) Any sized human ship ramming vastly larger station (also not very epic)

Beyond this, you can get some challenging fights if you take the early, weak ships against much stronger NPC ships. But the moment you get yourself a good ship (python,anaconda)... the challenge is over. And right now... pvp is virtually nonexistent.

So... for the time being... epic fighting requires an epic imagination.
this is the answer.

Are there epic fights? I mean I guess that's somewhat subjective. The combat zones with the Capital ships can offer a "wow" feeling at first, but overall I wouldn't say the fights are epic. It also depends if you include player fights. Fighting another player is where the thrilling fights are to me.

There are some really cool moments you'll have happen to you just through playing the game, but nothing that really would feel like a Hollywood movie. Most combat will be 1 on 1 encounters. The NPCs are also predictable once you fight enough of them. However, as someone who earns every credit they have via Bounty Hunting, there is a good satisfaction I get from the kills.

I hope they add more dynamic encounters as they add content to the game. I can think of a few examples of things that would feel epic. Such as a type of combat zone or something where a fleet might even jump in where you're waiting for them. Something to add a sense of scale to the conflicts that will arise in the story.
