Newcomer / Intro Don't know how to fix controller.

I was playing the game, lined up to do my next jump, but looked at the Nav panel to the left first. Then, when I hit the B button to exit out of the panel, my controls were all messed up. They were switched around in different places. I have tried to use different preset configurations in the controls menu. But none of them match the original default setup the game started with.

Is there any way to fix this, and get the original button configuration back, or is it now gone for ever some how?

Please help me if you can, I am in a 4k+ LY trip, and have stopped playing to try to find out if there is a fix for this problem.

Thanks,

Razar.

In the Options / Controls menu, at the top there is the name of your control setup - that is a drop-down menu - see if you can pick the one you had originally or a preset that works for you.

Hope that helps.

Those are the presets I have gone through. None of them match or even come close to the original preset the game starts with. I guess that the one I started with no longer exist anymore because I can't find out how to get it back. I wish there was a simple "Reset Default" button you can select.

But thanks anyway. I am just going to have to go through the trouble to manually set it up and hope it keeps the settings this time. Still not sure how they can just mess up in the middle of playing the game.

seems odd. what platform and controllers do you use? the only thing i can think of is that you're on pc and windows somehow messed up your usb device enumeration ... if that the case, always connect your devices in the same order before you fire up the game, and make sure they work. i've also read about hotas callibration going nuts on xbone.

if you want to remap your controls ... it is really a chore, but the way i would recommend to do it: clear ALL settings, set only what you need and how you want it, and ... backup! (if you are on pc) https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDange...psa_remember_to_back_up_your_control_configs/

the game creates a custom.binds file whenever you change anyhing (and switches to the 'custom' layout). you can copy/rename this file to whatever you wish, then (after restarting the game) you can select layout by that name, and be assured the game will not overwrite it (unless you specifically remap some option ofc).

I am on PC with the controller. I have not unplugged anything, or plugged anything in. I always avoid doing that while playing games. If I connect a headset, or mic, I will back out of my game session, then log back in. I have had problems with that before with older games I played.

Thanks for the info on remapping the controls. I figured it would take a while. I used to play Star Trek Online, and created complete keybinds and macros for it. That was long and drawn out also. So I figure this game might take a bit more time to do.

I hope to be back in the game before too long today because I am hoping to make it to my destination and back before the end of the day tomorrow.

Thanks again to both of you,

Razar.

Quick update, when I go to the file that has the keybinds saved, none of them are for the controller. Also, there are no other files with keybinds in that directory/address (whichever it is called).

I did go through the in-game menu to setup my keybinds again. However, if the game decides to jumble them up again, I have to do it all over again. I spent most of this time trying to figure out where the file was that had my keybinds saved for the controller.

But, even if I do need to redo the keybinds, I am still happy to finally get to play this game. Been wanting it for so long. And I am looking forward to the upcoming features the development team is working on. Most importantly, it will be free to players that own the Horizon Season Pass DLC. Still in awe at the game, and the community.

Thanks again to all.

The file location in the reference znôrt gave is correct ([C]:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings\). The presets are in a folder called "ControlSchemes" under the launcher/products tree - you don't want to change anything in that directory.

Make sure you have no copies of your ".binds" files in the AppData tree "Bindings" folder as that messes up the way the game reads and saves things (it looks at the info in line 2 of the file, that's why just changing the filename doesn't work) - in the main it stops changes being saved. Keep your copies in another location.

To be honest, I am afraid I will mess something up, and don't want that to happen. I was able to get them working in the in-game menu. Just took a long time to get it done. With STO it was very simple to edit the file, and create macros. If I messed up, I just reset them to default. lol.

I do thank you and everyone else for the help though. But until I am comfortable with messing with anything, I don't do it. Just to be safe.

Have fun and happy gaming,
Razar.

Hi Razer,

If you are concerned at messing up the key bindings then just make a new folder in that directory and copy all the files in there to the new folder.

Then if the file gets corrupted you can simply copy the files in the new folder back to restore the keybindings.

What files have you got in the bindings folder?

I can help with that problem if you'd like, just PM me.

Actually, I just did everything from the in-game menu. Since I need to use a 360 controller, it was easy. I was even able to go in and move some things around. However, none of the preset configurations you can pick from match the original preset setup the game started me with. Not sure why though.

Now I am working on changing the hud color. Not finding any combinations I like. Worked on it for about 3 hours. I was wanting to have the shields show up as green, hostile ships red, and everything else a blue color. But since the options to control the colors link so many things in the hud together, it makes it impossible for me to do, if it is possible at all.

Guess I am stuck with the original colors. Personally, the colors bother my eyes after a long flight. And I have bad enough trouble with my eyes. lol.

Thanks again for your help. If I ever do decide to mess with the keybinds file, I will shoot you a message for help.

I assume you are on PC since I don't know if consoles can adjust HUD colour sets. So Have you tried this:

http://arkku.com/elite/hud_editor/

There is a thread with a load of variations illustrated (trying to reduce the orange glare):

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...le-HUD-Colour-Color-Configs-(please-add-yours!)

Personally I use a "mocha" coloured set which eliminates the neon glow and shows all icons in correct colours on the scanner:

Here is a screenshot of that:

BTW ... There is a "profiler" that does a lot more than alter HUD colours:

Have fun!

Nice! Thanks for that last link. I am on PC, and was using arkku. I was able to find out that the different rows have more of an effect on different parts of the UI. For example, the bottom sliders mostly control the colors of the rings around the hologram of your ship, and show your shield strength. The next row up mostly effects colors of another part of the UI, and the top as well.

The problem is that wile each row mostly effects different things on the UI, they still effect the other parts of the UI that the other rows mostly effect. So, if I use the bottom sliders to get the color of the shields where I want them, then try to use the other rows the adjust the other parts of the UI color, they will effect the color I had set for the shield indicator.

Don't get me wrong, arkku is awesome! The person(s) that worked on it did an amazing job. And it is very simple to use. I am actually the problem. I have OCD, and am too picky at times. lol. I was wanting something that that particular program is just not able to do. But, it is not necessary to play the game. I was just nit-picking what I wanted. That is why it took me so much time. When I start working on something like that, I try to get it perfect, knowing that it is impossible to do it. lol.

The last link that you posted, that looks like it might work. While I have not used it yet, it looks like it might be another awesome program to use. I will look into it.

The dedication of this community is outstanding.

Thanks you all,

Razar.

I think your misinforming yourself - the rows determine the transformation made to each of the colour channels produced by the game - so for each colour that is output from the game, the matrix alters that by applying or removing colours and presenting that output to your display.

Sorry, I kinda said what I meant wrong. I know that they all affect everything. But I meant what their affect shows up more on. For example, if you have that site pulled up on three different tabs, and you start by putting the settings all the way down, then you can set each tab up like this:

1st tab all the sliders on the bottom are at 100%,
2nd tab all the sliders in the middle are at 100%
3rd tab all the top sliders are at 100%.

Then, if you switch between them, you can see what each row affects what part of the UI the most. They all will affect all of the UI, because you are changing the whole thing. But because of the shade and brightness of each part, some are affected more than others.

In the 1st tab, on the left side of the UI, the "Ship Analysis" window will show the name of the window, ship name, percentages, "beam", "Missile Rack", and a few symbols more clearly. Everything else is harder to see.

In the 2nd tab, looking at the same window, you can see the same thing, but also you can see the lines, outline of the ship, and more information in the window.

In the 3rd tab, you can see everything else, but more things show up.

I know what is going on with the shading, but I am having trouble explaining it.

What I would like for the shield display is if you were to set them to this:
<MatrixRed> 1, 0, 0 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0, 1, 0 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0, 0, 0 </MatrixBlue>
First row, first slider maxed, and the second row, second slider maxed. This will give the shield color I want, and hostile enemies would be red.

Everything else I want to have a soothing blue color, but still be dark enough to read when there is a bright star nearby.

I really don't think I am making sense. lol. Sorry, but I have trouble explaining things sometimes. My brain knows what it is, but can't translate it.

When you are playing with the HUD colours remember they also affect the Station Services menus and avatars, a great many perfectly good HUD screens are almost unusable elsewhere.

You are right about that. That is why I like arkku. It has menus up so that you can see how it will affect them. I did see some color setups that others did (via a Google search) that I tried, and my eyesight was so bad I couldn't read a lot of the menus on the hud, so I didn't load them into the game.
