the height indicators on the scanner? as in, if a blip is above or below you.
EDIT: I'm fairly sure it was the scanner.

Is the right answer. It was twin 2D displays prior to launch. David Braben changed it to the familiar 3D scanner at the last moment. Point to Alien too.

I'm still confused Alien, cos the statue is not located where you take the hitch-hikers to. The statue needs picking up from Achenar.
The hitch-hikers you drop off at Urtize, then as you rightly say you pick them up again in a panicked mad rush, and then take them to Edethex.
I've picked up and delivered the statue in January, even before the hitch-hikers appear asking to be taken to Urtize.
