DSS - How to Probe Very Large Rings?

I just recently came across a gas giant with a very large outer ring (inner radius: 2,114,726km, out radius: 5,328,776 km).

The distance from the gas giant body to the inner radius was so large, it meant the DSS was out of range, and so I couldn't launch a probe to scan that one ring system.

How do I scan a ring system like this?

Move your ship.

What System?

I would have thought if you can put your ship within range of the planet you should be able to shoot probes at the rings.

Sorry, I failed to make a note of the system.

But, basically, when you are in range of the planet, you are so far *inside* the outer ring that the ring itself is now out of range. The 'ring' does not come up as a targetable option in the probe launcher screen. If you move closer to the ring, then the DSS probe won't launch because the planet is now out of range.

Heh,

I suppose I can see how that could happen.
I guess somebody didn't check the operational parameters of the probes properly.

Don't worry about the ring until you've finished scanning the planet. Its s separate item. I scan rings after I've completed the planet.

I don't think you understand what the issue is.

It's not about what order I'm trying to scan the rings in - it's the fact that it appears to be physically impossible to scan one of the ring systems around certain planets.

Can the probes or dds be engineered ? and if so is range an option ?

There's only one engineering option for the DSS; "Expanded Coverage" or something to that effect - means one probe covers a larger area of the planet surface.
Dunno if that also extends it's range but there's nothing in the description which suggests it would.

I tend to probe while moving It might help. You are not moving fast but for me helps with probing.

Yeah, I ran into the same thing when I wanted to probe the ring of a brown dwarf (fss, get your mind out of the gutter)...
I got the message I was too far away. Getting closer and pointing the nose to the ring I wanted to probe got the job done, but I wonder what will happen if you have a very thin/small/slim outer ring (lets say E), that is very far out, as it will be hard to hit.

Looks like someone else had the same issue and actually managed to remember where they were (less sherry I assume) : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/469684-Extraordinary-Ring-System-not-Scannable

So at least people can see if it is do-able. There is talk about not being able to scan the outer ring, but I thought a single probe scanned all rings (if you can hit it)? (Could be wrong but I thought I'd seen it do that)

I've needed to probe each ring individually so far.

Also had an instance yesterday where there was a large gap between the two rings I could shoot probes through to sample the planet's opposite side. Nice.
