DSS - How to Probe Very Large Rings?

I ran into one of these today, BLU THUA CR-N D6-49 planet 8, outer ring is 2-3 LS out from the planet
I positioned myself just at the threshold being able to fire the probes, then targeted out towards the ring and just spammed 20+ probes as I slowly moved the reticule across the ring, hoping one would hit. I am certain that at least a few of them were on path, but all failed after a couple of minutes of flight without connecting. I don't think it's possible in this location.
Related: the sound of 20+ probes at one time is pretty wild.
