Dual Naval Rank

its clear that only jealous players are wanting this change because they dont have both and they dont want others to have both

Currently there's nothing actually worth getting jealous over with regards to the ship access, none appeal to me. Yes I have tried them all in beta and if you think any are currently worth picking over an Anaconda then good for you.

I can see you feel this thread is some sort of personal attack inspired by my jealously towards you... deluded much?

How does it make sense to have a high rank in two or more factions that are rivals?

How does it make sense to have Most Favored Nation status with one or more countries that routinely stab you in the back and otherwise double deal on you?

Politics doesn't have to make sense. Even the politicians have no idea what they're doing.

I would wholeheartedly agree with you, if there wasn't that extremely minor price difference that all these Pilots of rubbish Imperial Clippers can't seem to bridge...

Well, ok, I'm not that fond of the Conda in some ways, but it sure makes the best hauler in the game bar none. For now - we'll see how that Corvette and that other big hauler in planning shape up...

I'd hate it if their price makes another jump up on what already looks like a logarithmic price curve. I still have the most fun in the Vulture.

The rank is there trust in you to carry out a contract or a mission without ballsing it up, this is how mercenaries exist they have a reputation with everyone so they get paid.

If im not allowed the courier because im neutral i demand to be able to buy it on the black market.

Best argument so far. I guess it's ruining someone's immersion again.

Apologies if this has been discussed else where but I feel it merits some discussion with regards to the next update and the future of the game.

Currently players can hold ranks in both imperial and federation navy simultaneously, I think this needs to change to lock players into their chosen path. In reality this would not happen (unless you were some sort of super double agent) and I think changing it would be for the better.

This would restrict players to the faction ships of their chosen navy and other perks we may see in the future. Players could for example have the option to leave their navy and give up their rank but be forced to always start from the bottom every time they change. Any ships they have acquired in navy they are no longer a member of or do not have rank to buy but decide to use should not be able to be repurchased upon destruction.

What do you guys think?

Confusing Rank & Reputation .
There really is no Issue in Regards to Rank .. Often People Earn a rank in an organisation / Service .. then switch to another Org. / Service .. and they usually Retain that Rank & the privilege / benefits / entitlements pursuant to it
....
however , their Reputation & the way they are viewed by one or both or several Can & Does suffer as a result , "IF" & "When" they take actions that may or do Harm the Service or Organisation they have previously served..
The Game reflects that fairly well ... just try to Rank up in Empire & Federation simultaneously ... its not easy.
I think you will find that future updates will tweak/smooth/iron out the current issues in regards to REPUTATION ... where I do agree with you that there IS a problem.
.........
PowerPlay , is a totally separate Dynamic & Feature ... and until it has been implemented & then tweaked/adjusted/smoothed & refined .. I don't see any point commenting on it

I think that this is the exact reason why I've only ranked myself in Imperial ranks. :)

I think of it more like being a privateer in the old pirate days (and like in the Sid Meier game) since you have to own and operate your own ship and are not on a direct commission from the faction.

Although I don't know how historically accurate it was for privateers to operate under more than one 'letter of marque'.

Exactly my thoughts when reading OP :D

Incidentally, if the rank affected gameplay insofar that missions etc were granted to you based on that rank then I'd agree with OP. As they don't (so therefore are honorary titles only) I have to disagree.

Does one faction consult with the other regarding ranking? No they don't.

I think spies would report it if asked.

As for ranks dual rank is fine but I would limit benefits for example if one rank has special lasers for high ranking officials it wouldn't be offered to dual ranks. Calculations could be something like Our Rank -Others ranks = resulting end rank.

I can just imagine the Federation setting up for a Space Battle, and everyone turns up in their Corvettes and Dropships, except for one in his nice shiny Imperial Clipper!

What happens if you ever got to the rank that you had to make important decisions (hypothetical), there would be a serious conflict of interest.

Way it is now, the Federation and Imperial navies can never go to war against each other.

That's exactly my point, the way it stands now we're NOT in either navy - It's not even comparable to being in the TA or reserves as we have no power in that organisation. If FD ever implement it can you imagine a Post Commander in anything lower than a corvette? If FD did implement it they would have to "issue" a rank related ship to you for official use (not going to happen)

I tend to agree it doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's not much fun to get locked out of playing one side or the other.

I like the letter of marque analogy as a rationalization; you should be able to hold ranks with both as long as you can avoid ing them both off. Relevant quote from wikipedia article on the subject:

A letter of marque and reprisal in effect converted a private merchant vessel into a naval auxiliary. A commissioned privateer enjoyed the protection of the laws of war. If captured, the crew was entitled to honorable treatment as prisoners of war, while without the licence they were deemed mere pirates "at war with all the world," criminals who were properly hanged.[18]
For this reason, enterprising maritime raiders commonly took advantage of "flag of convenience" letters of marque, shopping for cooperative governments to license and legitimize their depredations. French/Irishman Luke Ryan and his lieutenants in just over two years commanded six vessels under the flags of three different nations and on opposite sides in the same war.[19]

would this said lock come before or after you got both ships because imo if we going to lock it down then a ship needs to go from your shipyard ;)
