ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Much as I respect anyones right to spend their money any way they choose , I cant see the reasoning to spend all that cash on a DK2 when it is clearly an unfinsihsed bit of kit. Once it has hi res screens that are pixel perfect in every way I just dont get it.

If you can afford to buy these toys just to see what the future might bring then fine, good on you. The rest of us will probably wait until it actually offers what it should, eventually.

There is no good reason, it is literally as you say, to see the future a year plus before it happens.....and the dk2 is a glorious glimpse of the future.
I don't regret dropping the cash and plan to give it to a friend once cv1 is ready.

Ok, I need some insight.

I have the DK2, I can now get it to work every time.... But I have a problem.

I have an odd version of colorblindness. When I am wearing the Oculus, every horizontal line is split. There is a row of red pixels on top and a row of green pixels just below it.

This is for everything. All text, ships, I do not really see any solid horizontal lines. Does anyone else have this issue with theirs?

I tried to use it in Elite this evening and couldn't test for more than half an hour before getting that old familiar feeling of nausea.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Could it be that you can't see blue? And that it intensifies the screen door effect?

I have the DK1 oculus and besides the super low res it really gives you another kind of experience. I really like it and it's a must try (if you like immersion and vr).
It seems that DK2 isn't that HD yet and isn't ready to be enjoyed completely so I'm gonna wait for the consumer version before buying another one.
The biggest issue atm is the res.

I love the DK2, but the smart move is to wait for the consumer version. Unless you have lots of disposable income or you plan on developing games for the rift.

There is also the CastAR coming out some time in the near future. If it can get game industry support, it may end up being the better choice as you can still see your controls while using it and resolution shouldn't be a problem.

Got set up last night and managed an hours play before bed.

I played without any nausea at all, but I did find text hard to read at times. I'm wondering if there are tweaks I can perform to improve things now. Ultimately it was completely playable and I thoroughly enjoyed flying in combat and around planets, stations etc.

I notice that if I look to the outer edges of the rift there can be a really defined split in the red/green/blue 'pixels'. Is this something I can correct? I'm still running on high settings and I don't know which anti alias sing profile suits best. I'm running a GTX 760 and needed to flip the display in order to render correctly if that makes any difference. Also main monitor is still in 1080p @ 60Hz.

I'm partially colorblind, but do not have the issue you are having. It sounds to me like you may have a bad screen that is not using all channels. Has anyone else in your household tried it? Does it look okay to them?

I will wait for a better version, however it's on my list of things to buy. Until then TrackIR and a large monitor will do just fine.

Well most people don't want the smoke seeping into their walls/carpet, so they don't smoke indoors. If you're in an apartment I guess it's not as big a deal unless you're going to lose a security deposit or something.

The other, larger issue, is that cigarette smoke will damage your computer's hardware over time if any of the intake fans suck it up.

Well - I own the appartment, so no security deposits lost here.

Whilst it is true that cigarette smoke will condense on fans and make dust stick to them, I wouldn't call it damaging to the system - you just have to clean the respective parts more often (although it's not much of an issue since I use a watercooled system, so I just need to clean the case fans and radiator from time to time).

As for triple screens and trackir being an alternative: I have that and no - it's nothing like a rift. I will keep using triple screens and 3dvision for games like civ V, but anything taking place in a 6 DOF 3d environment has become unplayable on screens to me the moment I put the DK2 on for the first time.

This seems to have gone this morning. I set my desktop to a lower res and 75Hz before playing. Now it seems pretty bug free. Just need to work on getting frame rate up. Low GFX settings is next move.

Hm, did we have the Topic "Downsampling" here?

It is possible to run the DK2 at 2688 x 1512 @75hz, that make the Text more smooth and a bit better readable.

That's called chromatic aberration - it's basically what happens when light passes through a prism - the different frequencies take slightly different paths, resulting in a 'split' image. Due to the nature of the barrel lenses used in DK2, there will inherently be some aberration, but try adjusting the headset a bit. The closer your pupil is to the center of the lens, the better it will look.

Just finished fiddling installing a HDMI extension cable (I know its not recommended) but mine is just 6 inches. DVI to 2x HDMI.
The main reason for doing this it to take tension off the supplied HDMI lead at the back of the system.

So yours is just 6 inches?

10 minutes is rather good I think. Congratulations to everyone that resisted the temptation to reply within that time.

And I apologise profusely for my inability to do so.

Ordered my DK2 yesterday, good thing is though if I don't like it or find it too sickening to use I can always sell it for a tidy profit on ebay.

I was going to put a  after that statement. I forgot to say its a lot stiffer than the one its replacing.
