ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Crossfire disabled:
VSYNC ON: 75 FPS, no judder, 25 ms latency

Crossfire enabled:
VSYNC ON: 73-76 FPS, judder, unplayable, 50-55 ms latency

does this not back up what I and others have said?

obviously, you have the rig to test it and if ultimately it works for you great, but, (and do not take this thewrong way) but so long as the devs are saying it adds too much latancy, I personally am going to go with that rather than the subjective experiences of other users.

maybe IF I tried it I would find it perfectly ok, but personally I am going to just pay any extra cash on a stronger single core GPU.

but to each their own.

anyone notice an issue where randomly all the blacks become dark green? seems like the issue isnt particularly noticeable in stations, but when flying around space (particularly the viper/sidewinder) it seems like the entire cockpit is surrounded in a green haze and I can see people's faded exhaust as thick green lines.

Hi Max,

Yours might be a different problem but this exact issue was happening to me when I was using an SMAA Injector for anti-aliasing. I removed it a bingo...beautiful black.

Indeed each their own
If it works, it works and well see about it. For me or Madmossy who asked the question its too early to have any opinion anyway except don't go buy crossfire or sli I guess we agree on that but if you have it already like I do one might like to give it a try because some seems to have success. For me it means that I shouldn't yet buy a new gpu and for you something else.
Just facts..

Edit:about the VSYNC it backs up that there's a problem with it.
So I might not want it on. so crossfire without and another way to break the frame rate has to be found.
I think I read something about that somewhere...
Anybody?

I've had my DK2 a week now and I still can't get it to work properly. Some demos work fine in Direct mode. , Elite Dangerous works fine once I've jumped through all the hoops! Helix rollercoaster works if I am in Direct mode but run the not direct to rift version.

My problem is I don't seem to be able to see my desktop in extended mode, I can only see a small portion of it, I can run some demos and they appear on my desktop but not the rift (they take up the whole screen in side by side mode, but my rift still just shows the small portion of blurry desktop as it's showing a portion of the left hand screen). If I make the rift my primary monitor it's near impossible to switch back and still doesn't seem to work.

I've looked for days for a solution and spent hours looking at my screen sideways and upside down. I've got the Rift set as the left display, I've switched it to portrait in Nvidia settings, tried various resolutions, tried the screens extended and duplicated, just can't seem to get it right.

I have Bilagos utility and starting direct to rift doesn't seem to work either. I feel like I'm missing something obvious but can't work it out.

HELP please.

I have Windows 8.1
GTX 770

Rift is plugged into dvi via covertor and shows as monitor 1

OR DK2 doesn't render the windows desktop correctly.
So one eye sees the left side, one eye sees the right. Completely different images and thus you get a blurry mess. You can see this more clearly by closing one eye.
For side by side apps I opened them on primary monitor, made them the right size, then dragged them onto my OR "monitor"...keep your right eye closed and you can easily see and drag the window into the OR.
Note: My OR is setup to be on the right of my monitors, therefore my left eye 1st sees the window being dragged onto the right, and thus I close my right eye when moving windows into OR.

Coffee not kicked in yet. Make sense?

VSYNC alternative!

Nvidia graphics card owners running the latest drivers can find an Adaptive Vertical Synchronization option under the 'Vertical Sync' setting in the Nvidia Control Panel. When Adaptive is chosen, VSync will only be enabled whenever your FPS exceeds your Refresh Rate. If your FPS falls below your refresh rate at any time, VSync is instantly disabled. This provides an excellent compromise between performance and removing most tearing. However it can still introduce some mouse lag.

But in short turn VSYNC off and see how it goes with the tearing
edit: limit frame rate to prevent tearing

I have tried that but I'm not seeing the whole screen, also most of the side by side demos I've tried don't open in windowed mode.

Virtual desktop is great though, will try more experiments when I'm home.

You won't.
OR cannot show the windows desktop properly because the windows desktop has not been rendered as side by side for an OR to show properly.
So viewing the desktop on OR is just a mess and unusable.
Everyone is in the same boat here, it's not just you.

Adding my order has shipped and arrived. Played ED yesterday - first VR experience in a long long time, no motion sickeness. Running on a i5 3.6Ghz@4Ghz and a overclocked GTX760. Didn't touch my settings at first, game ran lovely for quite a while - only noticeable difference was in stations.

Currently running with ambient occlusion off and shadows at medium, seems to make a lot of difference with very little noticeable change.

This was my reaction to the game

already posted a few times in the thread but it might block the IR diods on the rift and disturb the head tracking like that?

It's certainly blocking some of the IR Leds, it would be interesting to see how much of a problem (if any) this would cause. I may try sticking something a similar size onto my DK2 when I get home this evening to find out.

Although their official site does claim
"Put away your duct tape. In just a few seconds, your Leap Motion Controller and DK1/DK2 will be working together, with no impact on DK positional tracking. Now you're ready to experiment with the next generation of VR input."

They've a fancy page over at https://www.leapmotion.com/product/vr with links to buying the device and the DK1/2 clip

I thought this, but then I noticed the two little red lights on the thing that are exactly where the two LEDs it's blocking would be. My assumption is now that those are the equivalent of a pass-through so that the tracking still sees all the LEDs it's expecting to.

The only other led that seems could be blocked is the one under the cable, but I reckon you could just make sure that the cable ran in such a way as to reduce occlusion.
