ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Hi Zantium ..... what date did you order?

Sorry (again) there's nothing in the notes about which date I'm supposed to put in there, looking at the list I guessed it was "last update email" as they only started in July which is when they started actually shipping.

I actually ordered on the 22nd June and I only waited that long as I was undecided whether to go with CastAR first or the OR DK2. Lack of software support will hinder CastAR I think, though honestly, the engineering is better.

Tell me more. Does it help with readability of text in game? The trading menu is especially hard to read.

That's actually a tough one, but I would probably say no. I've had no problems reading the trading menu though, I just lean in if I need to but don't think I need to in that screen.

I'd say it makes the text less distracting and more even. The best way I can think of to describe it is that it's like some of the older anti-aliasing implementations. You get a smoother more watchable image but it isn't quite as sharp at the edges.

I'm leaving it on though, it's a definite improvement. It also reduces the light leakage and reflection that is sometimes distracting with the rift's vent holes.
I can't take credit for it though, I found it in the post here
https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=13808
and ordered the exact same screen protectors.

This is all very nice, it will do nothing until it is properly supported so maybe a year or so, but I'm really happy that they decided to support VR solutions. No we know what to aim for in the future, 980 SLI, monster power supply and CV1, will be expensive but should work nicely.

not so sure I picked up a gtx 980 today, i have found everything to run perfectly smoothly, no judder at all a at highest settings

in the new driver cp, I also noticed this

I have set it to 4, not noticed any latency and as I say performance is great.

Also the power consumtion of the card is extreamly low , its v quiet , v impressed. Now I just have to sell my 2 month old R9 290X....

there will over the next days and weeks be a number of tweaks for this card / driver combination, i have only just dipped my toe in

Here's to hoping riftup make a 1440 upgrade for dk2.
Also I wouldn't be so hasty to throw out those 290x to 980. We haven't seen amd's response yet.

hmm i run great on my 780ti oc . I got everything on max, and i allways put on nvidia inspecor with 16xsupersample and antialaising transparency on 8x super sample. And it runs Great and looks AWESOME

What helped me to get the shutter in rift away was the

Custom Resolution Utility, it forces my monitor to run with 1920x1080 with 75hz like the rift. Normaly my monitor only supports 60hz with 1910x1080. buts since my monitor and rift run the same rez + hz its runs great.

Here the link:

And did i say that Oculus Rift is so sooo sooo amazing. I could never play on my monitor ed again. And i got an 27" 2560x1440 res . But its nothing against rift , vr will change the hole gaming industry + more

Are you running any supersampling? I've found that my 780 caps out at 1.5x, but I'd love to be able to run 2x at least.

I have dsr set, have set any super sampling , could you point me to something that shows how to set up and I will feed back my findings
(been an ati user for last couple of yrs so am out of touch with all things geforce)

Chasing the flavour of the day is a losing proposition. Just as Nvidia is now optimizing I strongly suspect that AMD is not far behind. In addition, Crossfire technology has been improving at a good clip in the last year so I suspect that dumping Jones for Smiths is kind of premature and wasteful.
;)

But really, buying a 290 today makes no sense for an Oculus owner, the gtx 970 right now is unbeatable on price/performance. If you want to inprove system performance now I would recommend that, if you can wait a couple of months then the wiser option is to see if there is a counter attack from AMD on price or new models and also the possible discounts in mid November if the black Friday.

On both cases buying now another 290 is not a good option

Two days ago i bought 2 EVGA GTX 970s to replace my GTX 770, in SLI FPS in all the games i have run are running at incredible FPS on my Iiyama 144HZ monitor, 340 FPS in Metro 2033 Redux with max setting in SLI for example, even switching off SLI and using one card gives me 170 FPS, they are also very power efficient drawing about 150 Watts on full load.

Less power consumption= less heat :)

I think they are the best value for money right now, i also hope to benefit greatly from the new Nvidea technology they are working on for Virtual reality

Nice. All weekend I've been looking at these, and the 980's, and working out if I should drive to Scan.
How does one of these handle on their own, non SLI mode?
Able to play on full GFX settings for a rift without any issues?

I havent had any time to run my DK2 on these cards yet, ( too much real life stuff to do ) but in non SLI mode in Metro 2033 redux on a 144HZ monitor i get around 177FPS with V sync off.

I don`t expect to have any issues running these on my DK2 though, atm i have more trouble just setting up the Rift for ED with the current SDK, i dont think the cards themselves will be a problem though and the fact that Nvidea are working on tech that allows one card to render to one DK2 screen and the other card to render to the second screen in SLI mode sounds very promising.

If you decide to get one or even more than one of these cards i think you will be very happy with it/them. ;)
as with any Graphics card i would reccomend getting a good brand name card like EVGA/Gainward/Asus/MSI.

IF?! You have any idea how long I've waited for ED?!
If you think I'll be running this on anything but the latest GFX card you're very much mistaken :D

It will be a gradual upgrade though.

980/970 now + new case with better cooling
After xmas/Easter new MB, CPU and Mem.

The question is would I get two of them? Hmmm. We'll see. My current MB doesn't have room for 2 of these so I'll have to wait until Easter time to decide, but the answer is probably probably :D

Interesting. What made you go for two 970s instead of a single 980 given the well documented latency issues with using SLI with Oculus?

the 9x series support a new SLI which removes latancy.

not sure if it will be out of the box, or one for the future, but each card will output to a single eye and apparently sync up perfectly. (dunno if this will be introduced to 7 series cards and below as well, or what AMD are planning?)

time will tell.

BTW is it just me or..................

BTW this is not a complaint as technically at the moment I am running below the minimum spec recommended for VR by oculus, however I fired up ED for the 1st time in a while over the weekend to show off my rift and elite to some mates, and I thought even on low detail, solo online, the performance seemed to have gotten worse, esp in space stations.

maybe just in my head, just wondering what you guys are seeing. If it is due to increased eye candy, this is great and all on full bubble, but, it would be nice if minimum could run on as low end gear as possible imo... esp as earlier builds seem to run so well***

***unless it is just in my imagination ;)
