ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

It's very poorly implemented in my opinion. Scale is terrible, 3d is not very pronounced if it's there at all, no menu integration, have to kill the program to exit a race, no 3d mirrors.... Etc. not worth bothering with at the moment. LFS is so much better in the rift.

3D just isn't working/implemented.
Tried it again last night, managed to get the game running on the DK2 but it's in 2D.
It kinda looks a little 3D but it's not, it's definitely 2D.
Pity as the game itself is great, really enjoyed playing it early this year.
Once they sort the issues out it will be the premier VR racer.
My only worry is that they won't sort it out. The devs were pretty lacks about their support of DK1 so I hear.

It displays 960x1080 per eye with a total screen resolution of 1920x1080 but what most people don't seem to know is that the (recommended) render target size for DK2 is 2364x1461! That is to compensate for the warping and wide FOV.

Thanks for clarifying, that gives me something to bench it against, with 2364x1461 it looks I should be good with a single GTX 970 till CV1 comes out.

So the performance issues people see with ED are just perfectly normal. That's a pretty tough resolution for most mid-range PCs.

We will see what driver improvements Oculus has talked/tweeted about and what they can achieve with Asynchronous Timewarp.

Seriously, please bear in mind that this is a Development Kit and is targeted at developers or die-hard enthusiasts. It won't be a plug & play thingy.

That said, all your questions are answered here: https://developer.oculusvr.com/?action=doc ;)

oohh not sure wot to say,, Think I'm a "die-hard enthusiasts".who needs a little help..
thats all.... would nt have purchased, and therefore being supportive of the product if i wasnt "die-hard enthusiasts"..... I,m Sure i,m not the only one with a few problems....as per this forum thread....
but , needless to say , Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement....thank you.:)

Need a bit of help here from the wiser please!

I just got the rift installed etc, got the config steps, tested the demo, all look ok. Have it in extended mode.

But whenever I see my windows screen with the DK2 or use it with Elite, it seems as if left and right images have been swap... any idea?

Also, I can not see an option in the game Graphic options menu to select "Oculus" anywhere. I can see a line that says Oculus image quality but it is red out and cant use it. I can select it my tertiary monitor (I have 2 normal monitors), but that is it.

Any idea why the images are swapped or why I cant see the "Oculus" option in the game graphics menu?

EDIT: I finally found the Oculus option in the menu, but now the oculus led light is only orange. I can see the game menu on my monitor but oculus is dead...

with the rift in extended mode, is it set to 2nd monitor, portrait mode 75hz (in windows) in elite you have to play in extended mode.

Also, do you have the newest SDK and firmware installed on your rift?

(0.42 beta, the firmware to complement it is in with the download)

As for enabling in elite.....
the oculus option is there...... of top of head i cant remember where however so about as helpful as a chocolate teapot on that part tho!.

your desktop is not usable in the rift (unless you download the virtual desktop app) and how you explain is sort of how it (is meant to) look.

so actually on reflection it sounds like you just need to find that enable rift mode in the elite settings.

edit..... actually number 2..... I may have figured it.... I think there is a bug at the moment, you can only have ONE monitor as far as i know if using the rift, so you may need to unplug one of your other screens.

try that and then see

No offense intended! :)

THanks every one for your replies I will give all those suggestions a go at the weekend. THANK YOU.

Another question....errmm theres nothing in the little manual booklet, and I cant find in OR site....
..
Can some one explain this IPD thingy, and ,maybe that "might be part of the problem to ?????

I've played around with the lens 'adjustment-distance ' both on the head set and matching it in the sdk with the slider bar. ( theres no difference ,(( aside from feeling a bit giddy when I change the "experimental 3d settings bar in the elite options....)

Again,
Thank you , to everyone who has offered help and advice.

go into the advanced properties in the oculus settings.

create a custom profile, with your sex and height

with your rift in direct mode there is a little app to set your ipd, it involves looking at a set of 4 green lines and moving them to your periferal vision, essentially i think it is measuring your eyes, and the distance in between them.

this will then be saved on your profile and you can set one up for all users.

Your gfx card is better than mine so you will be fine. The first time you look up in a station and shout OHMYGODLOOKATTHATIMSOSMALL you wont regret the purchase. When you are grinning like a chimp as you spend half an hour just circling azaban city gawping you wont regret the purchase. and whern you lean over in your chair and see they HAVE MODELLED THE UNDERSIDE OF THINGS you wont regret your purchase.

2 months before CV1 comes out, sell it on ebay

Jobs a good-un

As for resolution vs. readouts. Lean forward a bit like in a real life cockpit.

Nice! ,i just wanted to say you convinced me :p, i ordered mine yesterday, now the problem is to wait 6 - 8 weeks, but at least i will have it before final release of ED comes out.

Thanks

Why does that matter? I've done the IPD calibration in extended mode. Does that not work?

no probably not, am sure its fine.......

its just i know that direct mode 100% works in that app, and that is technically the "official" way the rift is meant to work. IF I get a less than optimal result with direct I do always try extended

but imo trying direct 1st - unless you know not to - is the better course of action.

(truth is, I didnt know if extended worked or not in the IPD settings ;) )

I'm a total noob mate. I can't even get my rift focussed. It looks easier to get laser eye surgery done than adjust the "EVERYBODIES EYES MUST BE EITHER A OR B CUP COMPATABLE" lenses. why in gods name they didn't just have a focus on the side of each lens I don't know.

This is not a consumer unit. Really, as a 'total noob' you should maybe have thought twice before ordering. If you did think twice, then fair enough, but at least keep in mind that this isn't the finished product.

Whos running a gtx 970 with their rift? Just wondering what settings you are using for total judder free gameplay. I have just sold my pair of gtx 680s so I won't be using sli until I get a bit more cash to run 970 sli. Slight downgrade for now but I sold them while they still had value so I could get the 970

Nah, I'm not complaining. I knew what it was, and its still amazing. Just a bit blurry-amazing :D

Just put your glasses on? There's a fair bit of space in there, you might mange depending on your frames. Or get some contacts?

First, an expectation must be set; it is never 100% judder free, but I don't think that's because of the hardware. There are occasional jitters and jitters when loading into new areas and stuff that, irrespective of settings, never go away. Another example is its always juddery for me after the initial load, for about 5 seconds. Some kind of caching issue I'd imagine.

So, I have an i7 4770 and a gtx970. I get a really solid framerate most (98%) of the time. Used high preset, but knocked a few things down:

AA off
Bloom off (personal aesthetic choice, looks weird)
Lens flare off (personal aesthetic choice, lens flare makes no sense when it's really your eyes!)
Environment detail medium
Effect detail high (down from ultra)
Shadows medium

And that's it. Good luck man.

Got it, thanks, now working as intended.

By the way, I thought the SDK thing was optional and only for dev related work? Do I need it to play?

I noticed now that I get some annoying jitter when I move my head. If I stay still it is fine but it seems linked to head tracking?

I have read some fixes for this around but they dont seem to work: changed my W7 to basic from aero theme. Forced Vsync and 75Hz in my Nvidia control pannel... any other ideas?

Also, I am experiencing some white light flashes from time to time. Is that normal? I.e. some reflections from thrusters and the like? I also got them while at the hangar so...

GTX680 here

The SDK you need is the program that sits in task manager.
Its the one you run the demo and set IPD from.

Re the flashes not its not normal, well not to me, try to capture it and ticket it if possible.

I've done all that with just the "runtime". I didn't bother installing the SDK. Should I?

Question about this... it says to move the green lines as far to the side as possible, so all you see is a slither of green. Does that mean moving it as far as possible to the left or right with you following it with your eyeballs? Or do you look straight ahead when doing this?
