ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

For me the exciting thing about the HD prototype is that (correct me if I'm wrong here) but it had separate 1080p screens for each eye.

Not only is that awesome resolution, but by being separate doesn't that mean that you can use separate graphics cards for each eye?

Hence a pair of GTX 780s would mean everything would be butter smooth at top detail.

One of the problems with the Rift is that SLI/Crossfire introduces too much latency so you need one giant card to do everything. Therefore to get a good resolution AND a good frame rate you need something HUGE.

if you have amblyopia, then you will struggle to get the 3d affect. Do you have a esotropia (squint) where you eye turns in or out then its highly unlikely you will have any stereoscopic vision that will help with creating 3d.
If there is a large difference between eyes in prescription or visual acuity difference then this will hinder/stop your oculus rift experience. I think its about 8percent have issues with 3d.

I don't have any eye problems (apart from wearing glasses with a fairly small correction), but when looking at a 3d tv, the effect works for about a minute, and then my brains figure out something's wrong, try to focus on the left and right image differently and I become cross-eyed and unable to focus.
Strange, I know. :p

In need my DK2 now, dammit !

Has there been any info on whether the first batch is still on track for July delivery ?\
...I ordered a few hours after the pre-order went online :D

You and me both. I'll be gutted if my order was bumped to August.

Saw an interview with Palmer from E3 this morning, July shipments are still on track so far. Mines an August DK2 so trust me, I'm keeping up to date :p

I could be wrong and don't know about the HD prototype but, I believe to DK2 is a combined resolution ofv1080p and doesn't support multiple cards, yet.

Hope I'm wrong.

I'm very sure that the HD prototype was reported to offer 960x1.080 per eye ... so it would have been a single screen as well, offering basically the same resolution that is to be expected from the DK2. (I'm ignoring the entire pentile OLED and pixel wastage discussions here, where people manage to calculate "more accurately" how the relation between the resolutions of the different stages of the rift is by counting subpixels differently and whatnot...)

Hopefully me too, I'll spit my dummy out and refuse to eat my greens if it's delayed. :D

The DK2 (and the HD prototype) are both single screens, and it's quite likely the CV1 will be a single screen too.

You can use dual GPUs if you wish, in SLI/Crossfire, but this might introduce lag. I think the GPU vendors are supposed to be working on improving their drivers for VR, and also cards more geared for it in the future.

One card per eye is probably a reasonable distance off in the future.

Never understood why oculus doesn't use a hardware splitter like device to offset the images instead of rendering two separate scenes. Seems like a huge waste of computer resources.

Then again I struggle putting my pants on sometimes.

Because the idea of 3D is that your eyes see 2 different things. :p

I have to keep away from this thread, every time I start to think about the DK2 arriving next month my blood pressure hits the roof.

Like many of you guys, I've alway's dreamed of having a great VR unit and hopefully it's not too far off.

Not been able to check out the DK1 so this is for me a big deal.

I ordered my DK2 30 minutes ago, just for ED :D

the closer i can get to feeling as if i am actually in the cockpit of a star ship the better :)

i have always found that the more i look forward to something the slower time seems to go, so i must now try and forget i have one on order.

Welcome to the expectant parent club. :D

Pacing will be mandatory next month.

Thank you

i think my order is due to arrive in August or a bit later maybe as i probably missed the initial order window.

Better late than never though :D

I ordered two days after they announced it and I really hope to get it as soon as possible. Not exclusive for ED but also games like Metro and Skyrim. I hope to terrify myself playing Metro again with the DK2. ;)

Some people are saying they are getting them in August, how do you know this. My order just says Pending awaiting inventory, no mention of a date anywhere. I ordered mine on 1st April so not too long after the pre-orders went up.

Because the website says orders placed now are expected in August. When first opened for orders it said July. Don't know when new orders are expected to ship but, previously there wad an estimated month of delivery.

Here's hoping.
