ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Question guys,

I have been itching to place an order on DK2, but I'm unsure of the timeline/roadmap for the full release. So question is what's the current estimate for releasing the Consumer Version, as an impending upgrade of CPU/GPU etc. may precipitate a DK2 order.

Cheers

no one knows, its all guesswork. if you ask over there (cybereality is your guy/gal) (s)he will say unless you are a dev wait for CV1.

My money is on not before this time next year, but as I said, total guess.

there are even rumours now that, whilst DK2 was originally to be the last devkit as CV1 would essentially have nothing majorly different in terms of how it works, thanks to the Spambook money CV1 may be so much improved that there could now be a DK3.

this too is not confirmed.

Depending on how obsolete CV1 makes my DK2 (ie will stuff work on DK2 still once CV1 drops) I may actually keep my DK2 until CV2 comes out. I reckon the next 5 years will see iterative improvements happen v v quickly.

Optimistic now would be Consumer Version 1 in Q1 of 2015 - there are rumours of a DK3

Additionally I saw rumours of the Nvidia 880s coming out so I would wait just a teensy bit longer if money was tight enough to matter. There is always something better around the corner with this hobby but right now it looks really close around the corner

If you're considering placing an order for a DK2, or waiting for the CV1, I'd recommend holding off till gamescon next month. Oculus are going to Gamescon, and if the CV1 is coming in the next 6 months, I'll be announced then. If it's not announced, order the Dk2.

Any order you make now will only ship in september anyway, so you lose nothing by waiting.

Sweet, you might have it for the weekend!

Now I'm jelly! ;)

This will be the general atmosphere in the T.J house this weekend if it arrives tomorrow.

Although the money has not come out of the account yet. has anyone been charged the balance yet?

except if he orders next month delivery may not be till october.

I would be tempted to stick an order in, with a view to cancelling it if need be.

Yeah, that's a risk, but I doubt it. Something tells me that orders are not consistent. I expect they're not having nearly as many though now than they did initially. Once they clear the backlog, I expect repetitively short turn-arounds.

As a later Paypal payee I haven't been able to jump the queue, I'm still:

"Your order is awaiting inventory before it can be fulfilled. We will notify you when it's about to be shipped."

As I'm away on holiday next week I can wait.

I can.

*twitch*

Hmmmm.. a mix of absolute jealousy and yet complete excitement!

Hoorah they are shipping... and why didnt I order 24 hours earlier then I'd have an email like the others.

Echo'd regular updates please chaps.... share the joy! and full reports after getting them up and running with ED.

The second it arrives I'm deleting the whole forum and then I'll run away giggling like a insane chipmunk on highly intoxicating chemicals...:p

I may post a pic first though. :D

I just got the "your CC has been charged" email too. Can't wait!

Except I have to repeat what I said a couple weeks ago: Even a full HD panel is not enough really. The game is perfectly playable but the supercruise distance labels on the hud are too small to read, and in general the increase in resolution is not so staggering that you'd wanna live inside VR just yet.

Good to hear you've got the email.

With the DK2 having positional tracking and when ED supports the DK2 hopefully that might cure that problem.

dont worry to much about status changing to shipped. As others of said on reddit it took sometime after some orders were actually shipped for the status to change with DK1 and if i remember rightly that was the case with my DK1 as well.

Looks like anything after 3/19/09:00 (except for a *few* exceptions) is still pending - from perusing both reddit and the OVR forums.

Hopefully they resume processing today (after they get back to work that is...) or they sold more than 5,000 units within the first hour.

this is an interesting point, that perhaps there are still more to be allocated.

It would have been nice for an official "& thats all for now folks, good luck for batch #2" or alternatively at the end of play yesterday "ok that is 3000 down and 2000 more to go for tomorrow".

that way we would know one way or the other.

Either way I am probably out for batch 1 (11:24am day 1) BUT I am now beginning to question whether I will even be in batch 2 if it is true that they have only covered up to 9amish so far

The whole process is becoming very annoying.
If they've recorded to the minute when orders were processed, they can let us know which batch we will be in.

Thanks for that and the other replies gents,

Looks like I'll be taking a punt on DK2 and having tried a couple of the mid-90's VR headsets and waiting for VR to go mainstream ever since, a few months for order turnaround won't be an issue.
